Le Defeats Shamrock In The "Battle For San Jose"

After taking abuse and dancing confidently for two straight rounds, both which he lost on the judges cards, Frank Shamrock finally decided to turn it on and unleashed an onslaught of combo punches and a beautiful Thai knee to the head of his challenger Cung Le. It wasn't enough. Cung weathered the storm and returned fire but it was a particular roundhouse kick to Shamrock's arm in the final second of the 3rd round that would earn him the Strikeforce Middleweight Title. Shamrock was visibly hurt by the kick and could not even make it to the stool in his corner. Later, both men would say they could hear the cracking of bones as Frank collapsed to the mat after telling the ref he could not continue.

Cung Le was impressive as always with his kicks, but his punching was sloppy. He was just able to put Frank where he wanted with those long legs and not allow Shamrock to get his hands in range while taking punishment that would slowly add up and finally, literally, break him. Frank went for but one takedown which he did not get as he chose to stand with the legendary San Shou striker. Either Shamrock's ego is that out of control that he doesn't think he needs to use the ground game, his best weapon, or his gameplan was just that bad. Cung Le's plan was great and though obviously beginning to tire as the fight drew on, he gutted it out and pulled the upset win over the "legend."

Drew Fickett (33-5) took little time defeating Jae Suk Lim via guillotine setting up his original fight with Jake Shields for the Strikeforce Welterweight Title. Jake pulled out of the fight due to injury but in 1:14 Fickett put himself back in the upcoming title fight.

Gilbert Melendez rebounded from the 1st loss of his career to straight dominated Gabe Lemley by TKO in the 2nd. "El Nino" seemed to want to prove his standing as a top Lightweight in the world and poor Gabe never stood a chance.

Joey Villasenor got the KO win in the 1st while Jesse Jones, Darren Uyenoyama, Wayne Cole, Billy Evangelista, and one Tiki Ghosn (who pulled an upset ending his 4 fight losing streak and defeating formerly undefeated Luke Stewart) all got wins as well. 7 correct out of 9 on my picks for this card.

On the side, Mike Kyle was allowed to fight on this card after a 2-year ban from the sport. Many in the UG MMA community (you know who you are) banded together to sign a HUGE online petition to ban this fighter from the sport forever. Mike is the guy who actually bit Wes Sims in a fight, thumbed Krzysztof Soszynski in the eye bad enough for him not to be able to continue, and against Brian Olsen completely lost his shit and had to be restrained by 2 refs after illegal actions! Here is the proof.
http://www.whaledog.com/2006/06/this-is-why-mike-kyle-was-suspended.php
The guy is a piece of shit and I can't believe Gary Shaw signed this fucker to Pro Elite. This guy should be banned for life and is everything we don't want in the sport of MMA. If you agree please email www.proelite.com and let them know MMA fans don't want cheaters and thugs in our sport. Thank you.

Nick Diaz vs the CSAC

Nick Diaz has been pulled from his Saturday fight at Strikeforce via Armondo Garcia even though he passed his pre-fight physicals. The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) cited late medicals which Pro Elite (owners of Strikeforce) deny. Promoter Gary Shaw claims Nick's medicals were finished two weeks prior and that he has a legal prescription for Marijuana from the state of California for "A.D.D." All of that being said, Nick still claims he would have passed his drug test anyway and been deemed "clean" for the fight. The CSAC has seen fit to not even give him the chance.

It all of course dates back to win Diaz upset Takanori Gomi, but tested positive for Marijuana thus the commission ruled the fight a NC. Following their rules, Diaz paid a fine and sat out a 6 month suspension for the infraction, and then got a proper and legal card for his Marijuana use. Though other fighters have presented the same cards and been allowed to fight, Nick Diaz was not.

A lawsuit will most likely be forth coming from Pro Elite for Nick Diaz and I hope he gets the money he would have earned for this fight, money for his last suspension, and money for compensation. Fighters careers are short and this is the 2nd time they have stopped him from fighting. Gary Shaw is no one to fuck with and Diaz "ain't no bitch." The CSAC, specifically Armando Garcia have over stepped their authority and must be held responsible.

WEC 33: Stann vs Marshall

Here is your buddy link to the Light Heavyweight fight between Brian Stann and Doug Marshall.
http://www.mmalinker.com/index.php?t=t&id=3513&mtype=svt&title=Doug%20Marshall%20vs%20Brian%20Stann

WEC: Brian Stann NEW Light Heavyweight Champion

I pimped him out 7 months ago on the 1st (and so far only) edition of the "MMA On The Fringe" series touting up and coming combat prodigies. Well, Mr. Brian Stann has already nabbed his 1st Championship belt in the WEC knocking off and out, Doug "Rhino" Marshall (7-3) in 1:35 of the initial stanza. In only his 6th pro fight, Stann captures the Light Heavyweight gold by crushing left hand to the also stand up driven Marshall. Rhino has been getting into better shape, but it was only a matter of time before a far more gifted athlete crossed his path and put him back in the loss column. Doug may not be the best MMAer in the world but the guy has a granite chin and powerful punches. The "All-American" has been training with Xtreme Couture and the gang working on honing all his skills not just his stand up which is his strength. The win is big, and the WEC Light Heavyweight roster small, so look for Stann to hold the belt for a while and continue to improve.

Also of note, Bryan Baker had nothing as a replacement for the now rehabbing (and by rehab I mean for drugs, not injury) WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho. Chael Sonnen took the decision win but everyone wanted the rematch between Filho/Sonnen after their last match ended in controversy after the ref called the fight though Chael never tapped to Paulo's armbar. We will await that fight in the future along with a hopefully "clean" Champion.

Brock Larson got a DQ win after John Alessio knee'd his dome on the ground, and Richard Crunkleton got the decision win over Takenori Ito to get back into the win column after a Lightweight Title shot loss to former WEC Lightweight Champ Rob McCullough. Marcus Hicks continues to out Jitsu everyone with a perfect 8-0 record and a submission win over Ed Ratcliff, while 10 other guys fought that nobody cared about.

Hey Strikeforce this weekend as the inflated ego of Frank Shamrock takes on Cung Le in a Middleweight Title fight and Nick Diaz is no longer on the card. Rumor has it he failed yet another drug test (brilliant). Smoke em if ya got em people.

DREAM Heiwa.1: Inaugural Event And Lightweight Grand Prix

Ikuhisa Minowa got off his 2-fight losing streak by doing two somersaults and then submitting "Baby Fat" Bum Chan Kang with a kneebar. Well good for "The Punk" but this was not a worthy opponent.
Hayato "Mach" Sakurai continues to be overlooked in the MMA community as he had little trouble getting the TKO on Hidetaka "Your" Monma. Hide looked alright at 1st landing a couple of good shots, while Mach's power was just too much and he has now won 9 of his last 10 bouts (dating back to 2005) without anybody giving a sneeze to the fella. He's got to be a fav in the tourney.

Joachim "Hellboy" Hansen came out swinging and landing the knees but Kotetsu Boku though knocked down, would not be stopped but Hellboy got Unanimous Decision and made it easy for the judges. Hanson is my personal pick to win it all if "JZ" & Aoki are out.

Luiz "Buscape" Firmino got the RNC on the lacking Kazuyuki Miyata in the 1st and moves along to the 2nd round where he will be defeated.

Katsuhiko Nagata kinda pulled an upset taking all 15 minutes to defeat Artur Oumakhanov of Russia. Glad I didn't get my picks done in time.

Mitsuhiro "Take Em To Decision" Ishida comes off his career changing upset of Gilbert Melendez to coast through Bu Kyung Jung but not dominating him as he should've. The now 0-2 Jung should have been put away but Ishida gets his 12th decision win, only stopping 4 fighters in his 20 fight career. He has got to learn to finish people and depending on who he matches up with, this tournament favorite could fall in the next round.

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic made his Dream debut against the sacrificial lamb Tatsuya Mizuno via TKO in 56 seconds. Not sure how much beating a "tomato can" does for ones failing confidence but how about Mirko joining the modern day era now wearing board shorts instead of the nut-hugging biker briefs he used to sport. Now if only we can get Arlovski, GSP, and some of the other package presenters to trade in the spandex tighties we'll be doing OK.

Eddie Alvarez gets an impressive TKO win over Andre Amade who can't stop drawing the toughest strikers in his bouts (his last was a failing effort against "JZ"). Eddie is a strong pick to go deep in the Grand Prix with his brutal striking (12 career TKO's) and impressive 13-1 record.

Tatsuya "Crusher" Kawajiri actually struggled quite a bit with Kultar "Black Mamba" Gill who is the fighter dressed like a genie in the above picture. Crusher has got to get back on top of his game and has not looked great since his loss to Gilbert Melendez a couple of fights ago. The Japanese favorite is tough as they come but a little off his norm these days and unfortunately sporting some corn rows. Not good.

Now to the main event and the controversy of the evening. The much anticipated bout between Gesias "JZ" Calvancante and Shinya Aoki which was supposed to happen at New Year's Eve before Gesias got injured, ended in a unsatisfactory "No Contest" by some odd ruling. The rules state you cannot elbow to the head or spine but elbows to the body are legal. So why tell me, was the bout ruled a "NC" when Aoki could not continue after taking 2 stiff elbows to the back of his shoulder? Shinya complained the 2nd elbow was to the neck but it didn't look that way to me. The shots weren't near the spine and seemingly legal. Shinya crumbled to the mat and claimed "numbness" in his body so he could not continue. Keep in mind, JZ was handling him on the feet and Aoki couldn't get the Brazilian to the floor to work his magic. It just seemed eerily familiar like when Frank Shamrock illegally knee'd Renzo Gracie who faked his way out of the fight for a DQ win. JZ's shots weren't illegal, so why wasn't he awarded the victory?

Ah how I missed the Japanese judges. A little controversy is fun and exciting for MMA. So what happens now? The decision (though it should be a TKO win for JZ as Aoki could not continue from legal strikes) is made so do neither advance in the tournament or what? We wait and see but this is also why you don't put the top 2 fighters against each other in a tournament. Welcome back Pride, er welcome DREAM.

Anderson "Attitude" Silva vs Roy Jones Jr.??

The video below this post is there for a reason. It is the 1st meeting between Anderson "Spider" Silva and Yushin "Thunder" Okami from back in their days at ROTR. What is interesting is that not only does Silva illegally KO Okami from the floor, but the referee actually has to hold Anderson back from inflicting further illegal damage. Silva thus lost he bout and went on to find prominence in the UFC winning the Middleweight Title. Now as luck would have it, Yushin Okami may now have found himself as the #1 contender to Silva and already sporting a win via bad blood, adds intrigue to the as yet unofficial match. So what does Anderson think about his possible opponent oh these many years later?

"I feel it was a cheap, cowardly way of winning," a pointed Silva said more than two years after the bout. "People that were there saw that he was in the condition to come back and keep fighting, and he didn't." He also mentioned that he doesn't "really think much of anything of Okami. It wasn't really a fight," Silva describes the disqualification loss before adding that he doesn't want to talk about it anymore. Whoa, why the 'tude on the subject oh Spider? For some reason the 2007 Fighter Of The Year just seems to have a problem with ole Okami. The guy basically lost his shit for a moment and still doesn't like the guy who did nothing wrong. I've never seen the usually professional Silva act this way, but maybe that will fuel the fire in their hopefully, upcoming bout. I say hopefully because...........

Anderson Silva has issued a boxing challenge to Roy Jones Jr. "I think he's a great boxer, one of the greatest boxers to ever box," Silva says of Jones. "I would love the opportunity to test my skills against him." The challenge from Silva is for a boxing match, not an MMA bout but it seems circus none the less. MMA fighters and Professional Boxers continue to have beef with each other's job. I have no desire to see this exhibition between to combatants in two completely different sports. It would be like a Hockey All-Star challenging and NBA All-Star to a shooting contest. The two professions are different and it takes different skills to do both. Roy is past his prime as Silva is coming into his and the NHL isn't even a sport. I may be getting confused here.

Its just a challenge, take it for what its worth, nothing. Dana White would have to "ok" the event and I doubt they could land Jones especially when Floyd Mayweather is the boxer talking all the shit on MMA while "fighting" in the WWE. Someone other than the Big Show needs to shut that bitch up and while I'm at it, hey Nascar fans, fuck you for even thinking you are a sport. I enjoy a good ramble. That is all.

Cage Rage 25: Both Shamrocks Fall

It wasn't much of a surprise as Ken Shamrock 26-13-2 found his 5th loss in a row at Cage Rage 25 against Robert "Buzz" Berry 12-7. Ken now 44, looked slow, unsure, and old as he took shots from Buzz, attempted but one takedown against the much larger Heavyweight, and then got KO'd as has become his MO. It has now been 4 years since Shamrock has gotten a victory (over Kimo Leopoldo) leaving many to wonder just what he is doing at Cage Rage with a multi-fight deal. I fully expect at least one more fight from Ken at this promotion and probably more "living death." "The World's Once Dangerous Man" has been TKO'd or KO'd in his last 5 bouts and seems content not to take people down with his wrestling credentials, and instead stick out his glass chin to make others highlight reels.

Tank Abbott 9-14 who has last 4 in a row coming off his embarrassing KO loss to Kimbo Slice, is still calling out Ken for a fight and I wouldn't be shocked if Cage Rage made it happen. The fight though realistically unimportant would at least draw a crowd and one man would have to finally gain a win. The "O" must go in reverse. Also, the proposed fight with stepbrother Frank Shamrock for December has got to be off the table now, as it would seem pointless.

Ryan Shamrock 1-1, 18 year old son of said Ken, didn't fare much better in his young career as he and Giorgio Andrews 3-0 went toe to toe in an entertaining slug fest, but broke his left hand in the fight and could not continue to the 2nd round. Ryan will heal and still so new in his MMA career he does show promise of a future top competitor. Give him time.

Robert Berry who comes out the better in all this, may be tapped to face Kimbo Slice next as Elite XC promotes and owns Cage Rage and needs an average Heavyweight to fight the street fighting sensation. Good luck with that Buzz.

Fedor Once Again A Free Agent

Let the bidding begin again. "The Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko is once again added to the list of MMA free agents (along with Matt "The Law" Lindland, Josh Koscheck, Andrei Arlovski, Ben Rothwell, Jeff Monson, Paul Buentello, Ricardo Arona, & many more). Apy Echteld, one of Emelianenko's agents, confirmed what a source close to the situation previously told ESPN The Magazine: M-1 Global and Emelianenko will part ways some time in the next week, making the Russian a free agent. Divorce negotiations are ongoing right now, with a formal announcement likely for in the next few days. "Officially, yes, Fedor will be a free agent," Echteld says. So what does UFC frontman Dana White think of all this, and would Zuffa be interested in putting together the MMA dream bout with Fedor/Couture that fans are clamoring for? "Absolutely, 100 percent, in a heartbeat," says White. "People think he's the best—I don't, not even close. But if it's somehow possible, I would make it happen." Jumping to far ahead for us fanboys to even contemplate, where would this leave the UFC Heavyweight title scene and in particular current Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Nogueira? It would make sense for Fedor to face someone else in a tune up fight 1st, and face the winner of Big Nog & Couture, but the best laid plans and all that. Putting Fedor against Randy would make sense $$$$ wise but Nog is left out in the cold with a worthless title making little sense. Of course, this is all hypothetical and what in the world does make sense? Hell, he may go to Elite XC now with deal in place with CBS, World Victory Road that just had their 1st show in Japan, or their soon to be rival Dream with much money and backing. Interesting none the less.

Randy With #4

Shogun Out, Rashad In Against Liddell

Aww crap rings out as Shogun Rua has hurt his knee yet again and has had to pull out of the fight with "The Iceman." Now Chuck Liddell 21-5 will face undefeated Rashad Evans 11-0-1 June 7th in London, England. Rashad will face the toughest opponent of his career jumping up from his "did I really win that fight?" debacle with Michael Bisping while Chuck comes off and impressive win over Wanderlei Silva. Interesting clash of styles and a possible title shot looms in the future.

Barnett, Gomi, & Cyborg Shine At Inagural WVR Show

Takanori Gomi looked nervous before his bout with Bang Ludwig and had trouble finding his range as the long armed American landed some shots and one good one that spun Gomi around. "The Fireball Kid" settled in and with one good blast Bang's nose busted apart blood flying as he fell on to the canvas. Back to his feet quickly he charged at Gomi and blood quickly covered his face. Gomi and he traded for but a moment and the doctors were called in to check Ludwig. The bloody, most likely shattered and cut nose of Bang caused the doctors to stop the fight. Gomi promised his opponent a rematch and was visibly upset winning in such a way. He graciously thanked the crowd and left.

Josh Barnett was not that much bigger than Hidehiko Yoshida who came in seemingly out of shape and very heavy. Though he almost caught Barnett in a armbar, it was Josh's German style suplex that wowed the crowd. In the 3rd the game Yoshida had nothing left and Josh got the ankle lock for the win. It is the 1st time in the gold medal career of Yoshida that he has been submitted (a verbal submission loss to Cro Cop was via strikes).

Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos came into the fight much larger than Takimoto and much more calm and improved. His leg kicks to Taki were just brutal and began to spin the judoko around and cause him to run away after each direct hit. The legs then went high and low over and over again as Cyborg controlled the game and when he tackled Takimoto he grabbed the heel hook and tapped the over matched Japanese fighter out. Man Cyborg looked so much improved and gets his 3rd legitimate submission out of his 16 wins.

Kazou Misaki got the rear naked choke over Siyar Bahadurzada while Fujita had no problem taking Peter Graham to the floor for a north-south choke submission, and Kawamura got the decision win over Braga Neto. Now for the controversy. Nick Thompson seemingly got his ass handed to him by Fabricio Monteiro but here is a prime example of why you "never let fights go to the score cards." Thompson was given the victory when he clearly lost and everyone was scratching their heads.

5-2 on the picks and it's nice to have a card in Japan again albeit a little one. The shows will get bigger, the roster fuller, and hey, they sold out the house for the event.

A Taste Of Peter Graham

WVR Sengoku March 5th

Fabricio “Pitbull” Monteiro 16-6 vs. Nick “The Goat” Thompson 34-9-1 The Goat rides in from the failing BodogFight with their Welterweight title and a 10 fight winning streak. Nick has the size, reach, and momentum to stop the Jiu Jistu warrior. Monty has been KO'd recently and is coming off two straight losses. Look for Thompson to sport a new look and get an early win. And seriously guys, enough "pitbulls" already. How about Shitzu as a nickname?
WINNER-Nick Thompson by KO
Ryo Kawamura 7-2-2 vs. Antonio Braga Neto 4-0 Ryo comes from Pancrase with a stand up philosophy while Neto is the floor wizard. Takedown from the rising star of Braga submits the now directionless Ryo.
WINNER-Braga Neto by submission

Makoto Takimoto 4-3 vs. Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos 15-11 Makoto the young Judo fighter started out bitterly with his transition to MMA being mixed at best (2-3) but now with recent wins over very talented fighters Murilo Bustamante and Zelg Galesic his confidence is on the rise. We all know Cyborg as Chute Boxe's attack 1st ask questions later war machine which opens him up for submissions and his cardio tends to wear out fast. I'm just not sure Takimoto can withstand the initial assault and Cyborg gets back in the win column after some recent bad luck. Makoto can absorb some punishment but enough to stop this madman?
WINNER-Cyborg by TKO

Kazuyuki "Ironhead" Fujita 14-6 vs. Peter "The Chief" Graham This is going to be an interesting one. Graham is straight crazy and makes his MMA debut coming over from K-1 Kickboxing. This nut job loves to throw the "rolling thunder" a somersault kick in every single fight whether it's a available or not! He can and will knock the crap outta people. The question is whether Japanese Pro Wrestler successfully turned MMA warrior trades on the feet or uses his legitimate wrestling skills to pound him out on the floor. I expect fireworks early and often but hopefully the Japanese hero wises up quickly and takes his insane opponent down. I just don't think you should mess around with this guy.
WINNER-Fujita by ???????

Kazuo "The Grabaka Hitman" Misaki 18-8-2 vs. Siyar Bahadurzada 13-1-1 Kazou is coming off his illegal soccer kick to the head of Akiyama who he had out and falling and should've held back. Oh well, the constantly inconsistent 2006 Grand Prix Champ wins and loses though always against great fighters (Dan Henderson, Paulo Filho, Frank Trigg, Ed Herman, Jake Shields) going 3-3-1 in his last, well you can add, bouts. Siyar comes to us from Afghanistan with a 2 year winning streak and pretty much a great all around game though even as Shooto's Light Heavyweight Champion this will be his toughest test to date. I have been critical of Misaki in the past and don't like his sometimes sluggish and sometimes exciting style.
WINNER-

"The Fireball Kid" Takanori Gomi 27-3 vs. Duane “Bang” Ludwig 16-7 About freaking time Gomi! Damn man, what's it been like 10 years since you fought? Ok maybe just 1 year and 1 month but that's far too long for the top Lightweight in the world. Gomi is coming off that loss to Nick Diaz in which he was submitted in an absolute war but then Diaz tested positive for pot and the fight is now a NC. He has to have learned from the lesson of not training and should be good and hungry to get back in the spotlight of MMA. Bang is a striker/kickboxer who can KO anyone but is subject to submissions and though a decent fighter, he usually comes up short against the bigger name fighters. Gomi outstrikes him and then takes him out on the floor punishing the kid for mocking the legendary Genki Sudo 5 years prior.
WINNER-Gomi by TKO

Hidehiko Yoshida 7-5-1 vs. Josh "Babyface Assassin" Barnett 20-5 Yoshida is a legend and I love watching him fight but he is absolutely going to get waxed here. Barnett has him beat on size, striking, wrestling, microphone skills, funny T-shirts, and power. Yoshida likes to slug even though he is bad at it, and his judo won't do a whole lot against the 250 lb. upper echelon game of Barnett. Expect a humorous and humble winner's speech from Josh and no doubt another challenge to Fedor Emelianenko.
WINNER-Barnett by TKO

Nice little opening card for World Victory Road who takes baby steps back into the MMA community. Misaki/Siyar could go either way as well as Takimoto/Cyborg but other than that the card is full of lopsided fights. Thank god Gomi and Barnett are back in the fighting scene and it will be interesting to see just who WVR brings in (or works with M-1?, Dream?) to fight these elite fighters.

UFC 82 Results: Unbeatable Anderson Silva

Simply the best, better than all the rest. Better than anyone, anyone.........ok that's enough of that 80's song but holy crap why are we surprised as Anderson "Spider" Silva has done it again. I mean this cat is straight ridiculous and tell me just who at 185 lbs. is going to stop this guy? Obviously Anderson successfully defended his Middleweight Crown (yes its a crown now) by tapping out Dan Henderson for only the 3rd time in his career. They came out cautious and Danny did what he needed to do. He avoided strikes, worked his way in, and won the clinch battle dragging Silva to the floor. From there he just pounded out the round with busy shots to Silva's dome. In the 2nd however, you could just see the "Spider" had flipped a switch as the round began. His stance was wider and his feet busy gliding around the ring. Completely relaxed he came with his speed landing kicks you have to slo-mo to see and finding his range. Dan sensed this and tried to clinch up but they ended up exchanging fists and it was Henderson who walked away. Knowing he had to get it to the floor, Dan grabbed the clinch again and hit Silva with his own weapon a nice knee to the head. Silva answered right back with a better one and Henderson was dazed and on the floor. Silva's insanely long limbs vined into a body lock and he began to open up on Dan but the round was nearing its close. Silva now had complete control of the back and almost flattened Hendo out (which would've meant death) but the veteran turned over to avoid the end. The end was not far as Silva sunk in the rear naked choke. Dan got one arm off but Silva hung on and with just 10 measly seconds left Henderson did the unthinkable and tapped out!

After the fight, Dan said he was dazed on the ground unaware of the time or basically what was happening to him. Silva graciously bowed to every member of Team Quest (including possible opponent if there is a god Matt Lindland) who accompanied Hendo to the fight. Always a gracious winner, Silva spoke of his devotion to the sport, his respect for Henderson, and said the only fighter he fought that he respected more was one Rich Franklin! Pretty cool and the cat is nothing but a class act. For the 1st time in memory folks, we have a new #1 Pound 4 Pound fighter as Anderson Silva tops Fedor Emelianenko on the list with yet another dominating victory over a world class fighter. Can anyone stop this guy? I don't care if Superman crawls from the crust of the Earth, I'm not betting against Silva ever again. Ever.

Heath Herring wanted a stand up war with Cheick Kongo, but instead he got a razor thin split decision win over the much, much improved Frenchman. Heath ran (or waddled) across the ring and dropped Kongo with the 1st punch of the fight ala Couture/Silva. He wouldn't make the Nogueira mistake again as he attacked with abandon. Abandon that allowed Kongo to take him to the ground! Actually not a mistake as Kongo was able to deliver strikes and Herring went for but one submission. Close round heads into the 2nd with Kongo again taking Heath down with beautiful almost slams. Herring got some takedowns of his own and curiously ignored the available anaconda choke that he has to know since he's tapped to it before, and instead worked knees and the G&P into Cheick. In the last round it was all Herring, now in total control and dropping those famous Pride knees to the body. Kongo could do nothing but take it and Herring is your winner. Hey, didn't someone pick this here upset, hmmmmm?

Jon Fitch had his hands absolutely full in his bout with Chris Wilson who critics said would be steam rolled. I disagreed (there is going to be a lot of I'm right in the post so get ready for it) and Wilson's great stand up had Fitch off balance and struggling. Fitch always finds the way and eventually grounded and grinded out Wilson for the remainder of the evening. "I'm ready to fight for that title, whoever's got it," Fitch said. "Serra, St. Pierre -- whoever the best man is, I want to fight them. Once you have that belt, every fight you have is going to be the toughest. That's where I want to be."

Current free agent Andrei Arlovski defeated the previously undefeated Jake O'Brien with TKO strikes in round 2. Yeah, so everyone picked this one right but Arlovski looked good even when put on his back by the former Division I wrestler. If Arlovski gets mount on anyone, you are done. Now the "Pitbull" goes into the market fresh off a win and who knows who will sign the former Heavyweight Champion.

Yushin "Thunder" Okami stopped the returning Evan Tanner with constant connecting lefts and a beautiful Thai clinch knee that KO'd the veteran. Okami gets a big stoppage win and possibly the task of fighting Anderson Silva next. Tanner was shaking his head during the fight as if frustrated with himself. The ring rust was there after his two year absence but it was great to see a class warrior back, and my guess with some more work Tanner can get his game right. Still, welcome back old man.

Chris Leben and Alessio Sakara went to war on the feet just like everyone wanted. They got a great show with both men standing in the pocket and throwing bombs. Sakara struck more accurately but Leben pulled the clips on his hand grenades and finally put down the Roman. Alessio thought things were stopped early but he was hurt bad and had his hands at his side. Good stoppage and a fun fight to watch.

Josh Koscheck got shocked early and often as Dustin "McLovin" Hazelett brought the wicked thunder to their bout. The two ground warriors just threw back and forth and the action on the ground was fast and vicious as well. Koscheck (now also a free agent) looked so good with his striking and just has blitzkrieg speed. Eventually he began to hurt McLovin and dropped him with a high kick to the skull. Followed up with some rabid punches for good measure and it's a wrap. Damn Kos looked good in this fight and not just his blonde Kramer haircut. I'd be shocked if he signed somewhere other than the UFC but some cash is going to be thrown at the Blanket who may have put away his boring guy nickname.

The "Nightmare" is back as Diego Sanchez ran through David Beilkhedsonvergonderman. Whatever his name, Diego beat the crap outta him as expected. Flabby Luigi Fioravanti may have sent Luke Cummo to the WEC with his decision win (another upset pick I got right) while Jorge Gurgel shockingly went to a decision in his win over John Halverson. That would be 5 decisions in a row (3 for wins). Are you ever going to stop anybody Jorge?

That would be a 9 correct out of 10 bouts there people and I've learned my lesson about Anderson Silva. So what's next? Silva vs Okami makes sense because Yushin has that DQ win over Anderson, the only blight on the last 10 fights on his record. Especially sense the UFC won't be bringing in Matt Lindland, Kazou Misaki, Denis Kang, or bring up his buddy and WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho. Hendo needs a vacation and some time to decide at which division he wants to fight and get focused again. I guess you could throw Heath Herring at Brandon Vera but that just seems like an odd fight. We definitely don't want Herring/Nogueira 4. Tim Sylvia vs Cheick Kongo makes sense and could be fun, if re-signed, Arlovski vs Nogueira for the title could be sweet. I'm guessing Andrei is going to be wading through a lot of offers. The "rubber match" (if you count Diego's win on the TUF show) between Sanchez and Koscheck would make sense now and I really don't care who Leben fights next or if I even see Jorge Gurgel fight again.

Then there's a fella by the name o' Jon Fitch. The Indiana native has now won 15 damned fights in a row and tied legendary Royce Gracie's 8 fight winning streak record in the UFC! All this and he's still going to be waiting if Karo Parisyan gets past Thiago Alves. If Thiago wins, the title shot is Jon's since he as already beaten Alves back in 2006.

Finally the big announcement last night was after Mark "The Hammer" Coleman was inducted into the UFC Hall Of Fame, that he would be returning to fight Brock Lesnar in 5 months. Gotta admire the pluck of a 44 year old man still willing to catch a beating.

9-1 people bet like a fool!! And just for the record, I had the "Simply The Best" thing before Sherdog.
