DREAM 18 Fight Card With Picks & Prognostications

DREAM 18 – Special NYE 2012
December 31, 2012
Saitama Super Arena
Saitama, Japan
MMA Bouts:
Shinya Aoki
vs. Antonio McKee  The all important DREAM Lightweight title (sarcasm) will be on the line as the 42 year old wonder meets the submission specialist.  McKee is a solid/boring wrestler who is gonna get caught sooner or later in the mat magician’s bag of tricks.
WINNER-Shinya Aoki by Rd.2 Submission

Melvin Manhoef vs. Denis Kang  I gave up on Kang a long time ago, and this is a match up in which he is the better MMA fighter but his notorious chin will once again be called into question.  If Denis can get Melvin to the floor quickly he has a shot but with the tiniest mistake Manhoef will land some true bombs and put Kang out for the 6th time in his career.
WINNER-Melvin Manhoef by Rd.1 KO

Bibiano Fernandes vs. Yoshiro Maeda “Flash” is the DREAM Bantamweight Champion (for what its worth) and Maeda is the up and down DEEP fighter trying to stay relevant.  This may not be the most exciting bout but Fernandes will get enough done to win the judges favor.
WINNER-Bibiano Fernandes by Decision

Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Michihiro Omigawa “Crusher” needs to say goodbye to Japan and finding some training and opponents in America.  The guy is very talented and just languishing in the East instead and trying to be an elite fighter against the best in the world.  “Omigodwa” is alright but just not on the same level.
WINNER-Tatsuya Kawajiri by Decision

Hayato Sakurai vs. Phil Baroni  “Mach” at one time was one of the best Welterweights in the world but at age 37, his 48 professional bouts have worn him down.  The “NYBA” is hovering at .500 for his career but power rarely goes away.  Phil isn’t a better fighter but he’ll find a home for those brutish punches the wound and take out the legend.
WINNER-Phil Baroni by Rd.2 TKO

Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Georgi Karakhanyan “Insane” is riding a 5 fight winning streak into this scrap with “Streetfight Bancho.”  Georgi is a submission monster while Takaya is the striker but he is reckless or ineffective for the most part.  I expect this fight to go the distance in a close affair where it doesn’t hurt to be the hometown hero.
WINNER-Hiroyuki Takaya by Decision

Satoru Kitaoka vs. Will Brooks Kitaoka is a solid fighter who is meeting a relative unknown and undefeated “Ill Will.”  Can’t say I know what to do here besides flip a coin.
WINNER-Will Brooks?

Marloes Coenen vs. Fiona Muxlow  The beautiful and deadly “Rumina” is back again to put a whoopin’ on the Australian.
WINNER-Marloes Coenen by Rd. 3 TKO

Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2012 Card With Picks & Prognostications

INOKI BOM-BA-YE 2012 Card
Satoshi Ishii vs Tim Sylvia  The “Maine-iac” returns from a disastrous outing in One FC where rival Andrei Arlovksi soccer kicked his head in after he was felled by strikes.  Ishii has been quietly training with Black House after Fedor Emelianenko crushed him a year ago in DREAM.  Its anyone’s guess as to how much or how little he has improved since but I’m guessing Tim will be able to land some big power shots and then they can talk together about getting beaten by the greatest heavyweight of all time.
WINNER-Tim Sylvia by Rd.2 TKO

Mirko Filipovic vs Shinichi Suzukawa  “Cro Cop” is back after a year long MMA retirement and finding new success back in the K-1 circuit.  Now the Croation is taking on a debuting “Wakakirin” who is going to take a left head kick to the dome.  “Cro Cop’s” back bitches!
WINNER-Mirko Filipovic by Rd.1 KO

Ikuhisa Minowa vs Bor Bratovz  Fan favorite “Minowaman” returns in the tight red trunks to face “Playbor” who generally plies his trade at WFC in Slovenia.  Ya gotta go with the veteran who topples mountains in a single mullet.
WINNER-Ikuhisa Minowa by Rd.1 Submission

Yusuke Kawaguchi vs Rolles Gracie  The tallest Gracie has kept busy this year as he heads into his 3rd fight of ’12.  Yusuke is an adorable chubby who is on a 3 fight losing streak.  This is no sumo match and Rolles is going to embarrass Kawaguchi.
WINNER-Rolles Gracie by Rd.1 Submission

UFC 155 Results: King Cain Regains Crown!

Cain Velasquez defeats Junior dos Santos by one sided Unanimous Decision (50-45,-50-44, 50-43) to regain the UFC Heavyweight Championship.  Cain looked a bit out of control early shooting from dangerously far out locations and missing the takedowns.  Velasquez was very aggressive attacking the Champions legs nonstop while landing stiff jabs as JDS sprawled.  Against the cage Cain began to work the short uppercuts and as JDS moved away the challenger landed some huge punches who staggered and fell.  Junior looks out of it as Cain just unloads a barrage of strikes from every angle but he cannot stop the Champion.  As the 2nd round begins dos Santos still doesn’t look to be home as Cain takes him down for short periods of G&P and peppers him on the feet as Junior begins what will be a habit of fence grabbing.  In the 3rd round, Junior’s face is a swollen mess and Velasquez works to the body but somehow Santos seems to be coming to life in the final seconds.  The Champ is retreating for much of the 4th as the work rate slows but Cain is still handling buisness as Junior continues to grab the damn fence with no reprocussions.  In the final round, Cain attempts the takedown and another fence grab occurs as Herb Dean finally gives the warning that the next rule infraction will cause him to lose a point.  Now Velasquez takes Junior down and works him over continuing the assault as they both rise and stand against the cage.  The 25 minute beating ends and the moronic crowd boo’s JDS which is completely uncalled for.  Junior fought hard and showed great heart not to mention he is just a sweet nice guy.  Stupid fucking fans.  Cain regains his crown in an emphatic beatdown to end the year.

Jim Miller
defeats Joe Lauzon via Unanimous Decision (29-28×3) in an exciting and bloody war.  Miller came out on fire using dirty boxing in the clinch with vicious short elbows to gash open and bloody the face of “J-Lau” before he even knew what hit him.  Lauzon showed serious heart hanging in there as Jim stayed relentless as Joe poured blood like a red fountain.  Joe continued to bleed for the 2nd round which Miller now controlled on the mat game and avoided punishment when Joe pulled a nice sweep to gain top position.  I was shocked to see a very fresh “J-Lau” for the final round after the beating he took and his notoriously bad cardio attacking the slowing Miller.  Jim successfully went back to his tight clinch game and Joe went for broke seeking a Peruvian necktie and then dropping for a heel hook as Miller avoided the last second hail mary attempts by the crimson Lauzon.  Literally puddles of blood coated the ring as the combatants embraced and smiled as the crowd roared in approval.  "Fight Of The Night"

Constantinos Philippou TKO’s Tim Boetsch at 2:11 of round 3 as bad luck abounds.  The “Barbarian” worked his game in the initial round and even knocked "Costas" down with a head kick in the final seconds.  Between rounds it seemed as though Tim had broken his right hand and then a minute into the 2nd an accidental headbutt opened up Boetsch.  Philippou did well with his movement avoiding the takedowns but then an accidental eye poke really seemed to take Tim out of the fight.  Between rounds Tim looked thuroughly defeated and bloody claiming he couldn’t see.  Trainer Matt Hume tried to amp up his fighter but "Costas" did a great job of G&Ping Boetsch who became a bloody mass.  It was sad to watch as Tim couldn’t seem to do anything but each punches until the merciful stoppage.
* Constantinos Philippou quietly wins 3 bouts this year at Middleweight and will now crack the Top 10 on a 5 fight winning streak!

Yushin Okami again defeats  Alan Belcher by Unanimous Decision (30-27×2, 29-28).  The “Talent” basically did everything you shouldn’t do against a wrestler throwing leg kicks, jumping guard, and not stopping the takedown as “Thunder” was allowed to do what he does best, controlling opponents on the mat for 15 minutes.

Derek Brunson Upsets a hapless Chris Leben by Unanimous Decision (28-28×3) in his UFC debut.  Leben looked very rusty and slow as Derek took him down over and over again using control but illiciting little action.  It was not a fun fight to watch and once again Leben’s career looks to be in serious trouble.

Eddie Wineland defeats Brad Pickett via Split-Decision ( 30-27×2, 28-29).    The 1st WEC Bantamweight Champion looked solid using his speed and reach to pepper Pickett who just couldn’t seem to bridge the gap or score significant takedowns.  Brad just looked too small and I wonder if “One Punch” would be better served at Flyweight if he could make 125.  Another big win for Ed who is making a decent run toward the top again.

Erik Perez TKO’s Byron Bloodworth at 3:50 of round 1.  Bloodworth isn’t a UFC level fighter in this showcase for the Mexican fighter who is buyed by the Lucha Libre mask he wears and the UFC was actually selling at the event.  We need to see a better test to guage where Erik truly is at in his young career.

Jamie Varner defeats Melvin Guillard by Split-Decision (30-27×2, 27-30).  Melvin was landing powerful leg kicks early but Varner began to find his looping overhand right and used the takedown to ruin Melvin’s offensive hopes.  Jaime controlled the end of the fight and won the fight despite the blind judge Adelaide Byrd idiotically scoring the affair 30-27 for Guillard which should get him fired if there is any justice in the world.

Myles Jury defeats Michael Johnson by Unanimous Decision (30-27×3).  Johnson possessed zero takedown prowess and spent the evening on his ass unable to do a damn thing about it.  Jury just took him down when he pleased and Michael looked like he had never wrestled before tonight.  Jury stays undefeated in a head scratching effort by Johnson who left his fist in the box.

Todd Duffee KO’s  Philip De Fries at 2:04 of the very 1st round for a triumphant return.  It looked pretty cool but keep in mind De Fries isn’t a UFC level Heavyweight.  A win is a win but we need to see Duffee against a better opponent before we pontificate on his potential.  “KO Of The Night”

John Moraga submits Chris Cariaso by Guillotine Choke at 1:11 of the last round.  “Kamikaze” really controlled the fight early but Moraga came out strong needing the finish in the 3rd and getting it as he pressed Chris against the cage standing above his foe and locking in the choke that Cariaso could not find escape from.  “Submission Of The Night”

Max Holloway defeats Leonard Garcia via Split-Decision (29-28 x2, 28-29) in a very entertaining scrap.
6-5 on the picks to end the year on a low note.

UFC 155 Dos Santos vs Velasquez 2: Picks & Prognostications

UFC 155: Dos Santos vs. Velasquez
December 29, 2012
MGM Grand Garden Arena
Las Vegas, Nevada
Main Card Bouts (PPV):
Junior dos Santos
(15-1) vs. Cain Velasquez (10-1) [Rematch]  Throw the 1st meeting out when the man called Cain had a bad knee injury and JDS now claims impairment as well.  Black House meets AKA again as the JDS power boxing clashes with Velasquez’ elite wrestling prowess.  Cain butchered “Bigfoot” last out in a blood bath while Junior crumbled the fading Frank Mir at the same event.  I worry that Cain is hittable but when have we seen JDS grounded for a significant amount of time?  When the former champion gets his ground game going its hard to think of someone with better G&P at Heavyweight than the now retired Fedor Emelianenko whom he reminds me of.  Cain also has KO power to threaten with even if he doesn't have the accuracy of the current Champion.  If, I say IF, Cain's healthy knee can mix up the attack and stop JDS from finding a comfortable range, I expect the MexiCAN to test the Brazilian to match his pace and varied attack.  Of course it only takes one from JDS I always favor a well rounded game to a singular style any day.  An early takedown is crucial but I'm out on the limb looking to set up a trilogy between the best two Heavyweights in the biz today.
Upset Pick WINNER-Cain Velasquez by Rd.4 TKO

Jim Miller (21-4) vs. Joe Lauzon (22-7)  The smaller Miller brother has only lost to Nate Diaz, Benson Henderson, Gray Maynard, and Frankie Edgar which is an absolute murderers row.  “J-Lau” is more of a middling fighter who gets near the conversation but never in it.  Though Jim needs to find more offense in his game he none the less has smothering wrestling and a pace that could give the notoriously cardio challenged Lauzon fits.  Joe really tends to lose if he sees the 2nd and especially the 3rd round and Decision winning is what Jim does well.  Miller is no stranger to the submission game either which is Joe’s only real shot as Jim has won 12 times with the tap himself.  The percentages lean toward Jimmy in all facets as he frustrates Lauzon showing who is the elite artist heading toward that elusive title shot yet again.
WINNER-Jim Miller by Decision

Tim Boetsch (16-4) vs. Costa Philippou (11-2)  When Chris Weidman fell out due to injury, I have no idea why Alan Belcher wasn’t bumped up into this bout making it a top contender bout.  Anywho, I have oft found the “Barbarian” to be overrated as he got a gift against Hector Lombard, narrowly came back from near death against Yushin Okami, while defeating lackluster mid to low level fighters at Middleweight.  The Serra/Longo striker is a surprise at 185 winning 4 straight while turning heads with boxing level striking and general toughness.  Still, Tim knows his game gaining top control and punishing his adversary’s while Costa has not proven himself on said mat area.  This isn’t going to be very pretty but unless Costa has out of this world takedown defense, he’s going hit the floor eventually and fearing the takedown while standing.
WINNER-Tim Boetsch by Decision

Yushin Okami (27-7) vs. Alan Belcher (18-6) [Rematch] Interestingly enough, it was way back in ’06 when the “Talent” got his 1st UFC bout on short notice against the “Thunder” warrior.  Since Alan has gone 9-3 dropping a few but growing vastly as a fighter and have most of his woes against the injury bug.  Okami since the 1st meeting has gone 10-4 losing only to the best of the division notably getting thrashed by Anderson Silva and blowing a big lead recently to Tim Boetsch.  While Belcher seems to be improving Yushin seems to be waining in his career searching for confidence and a groove.  Its the story of catching a guy at the right time for Belcher who is finding his way using his stellar kickboxing to his advantage while ready with the submissions if/when Okami takes him down.  “Thunder” isn’t going to make it easy but Alan adds enough power when needed while not feeling threatened on the feet putting together the biggest win of his career thus far!
Upset Pick WINNER-Alan Belcher by Decision

Chris Leben (22-8) vs. Derek Brunson (9-2)  The “Crippler” is back for his 92nd chance to redeem himself after a DUI arrest, steroid use, and most recently getting popped for Oxycontin among his normal doucheness and yet another year long suspension.  Brunson gets to be the 1st call up from Strikeforce at their final imminent demise to fill in for Karlos Vemola and showcase his “Hurricane” striking.  Leben has the ability to get hurt in a fight, then going into Zombie mode and landing a KO left hand with eyes glazed.  This is a nightmare match up for Derek who got lamped only 0:41 into his last bout and taking a giant leap in competition.  Wrestling is the key for Brunson but sooner or later that killing blow will connect and Derek’s lights will go out.
WINNER-Chris Leben by Rd.2 KO

Prelims (FX):
Brad Pickett (22-6) vs. Eddie Wineland (19-8-1)  This bout deserves to be on the main card but that is all I will say on that issue.  “One Punch” is knocking on the door of a title shot but Ed has been there and done it all as a former contender and former Champion.  Eddie is sneaky powerful and versatile losing a couple decisions to “Alpha Males” (see what I did there?).  In pretty even fight, Wineland will have a significant reach advantage while Pickett possesses those submissions that Ed used to succumb to early in his career.  The ATT Brit (wha?) has been rolling more recently and has lightning quick transitions that can confuse anyone on the mat.  Its going to be back and forth in exciting fashion but I like Pickett to eat some shots but use his mixed attack to earn the judges favor in the end.
WINNER-Brad Pickett by Decision

Erik Perez (12-4) vs. Byron Bloodworth (6-2) “El Goyito” has looked strong winning 7 straight including his 2 UFC bouts.  Byron is alright but a bit green for my tastes as the Jackson/Winkeljohn fighter works game against a guy who just sat on the shelf for over a year which is never good unless you are Georges St. Pierre.  Perez is getting some press for wearing a Lucha Libre mask to the Octagon but its not really an issue of any importance save for aesthetics.
WINNER-Erik Perez by Decision

Melvin Guillard (30-11-2) vs. Jamie Varner (20-7-1) Ooh this is gonna be a fun grudge match!  After Varner got sick at the TUF 16 Finale weigh ins, the bout was cancelled and Melvin began saying Jaime was “scared to fight” him thus halting their scheduled meeting.  Melvin is known to shit the bed in the big bouts but he will always possess that sick power and good speed.  Varner isn’t afraid to that big mistake either but he is more well rounded fighter but this fight could easily go either way.  When in a real war I have to lean toward the former WEC Lightweight Champion who can grapple and look for submissions that seem to be the “Not So Young Assassin’s” Achilles heel.  I won’t be surprised either way but ya gotta roll the dice for the underdog sometimes.
Upset Pick WINNER-Jamie Varner by Decision

Michael Johnson (12-6) vs. Myles Jury (10-0)  The “0” must go.  The Blackzilian may not have the pretty record but he has fought better and improved more with an ability to showcase more skills while the undefeated Jury needs to wrestle to win.  “Fury” has only competed once in the big dance while Johnson has become a young veteran who isn’t afraid to put out a video called “Fist In A Box” showing he cannot sing but he doesn’t care.
WINNER-Michael Johnson by Decision
Prelims (Facebook):
Phil DeFries (9-1) vs. Todd Duffee (7-2)  The “Duff Man” is back in the big time after getting blown up by Alistair Overeem in K-1 and then besting journeyman Neil Grove to get the replacement slot.  Phil is going to want to grapple but he’s only a few halted takedown attempts from being clubbed to death by the powerful specimen.  Todd does the right things backed by the intelligence of AKA and plays it just safe enough to get his big punch in and lamp DeFries.
WINNER-Todd Duffee by Rd.1 KO

Leonard Garcia (15-9-1) vs. Max Holloway (6-1) “Blessed” opened my eyes a bit when he systematically took apart Justin Lawrence in his last bout with  outstanding striking while the veteran Garcia is on a 3 fight losing streak backed by his windmill hay makers and favorable judging.  Leonard’s days were numbered a long time ago and coming up against a much younger (youngest on the UFC roster I believe) and far more sound fellow striker with a reach advantage that serves him well.  Holloway possesses that Hawaii strong heart and out duels the bomb thrower in a fun growing experience.
WINNER-Max Holloway by Decision

Chris Cariaso (14-3) vs. John Moraga (12-1) The MMA Laber has reeled off 6 straight wins while Moraga has only won 3.  John has started to make its name but “Kamikaze” has been solid amassing a quiet 4-1 record for Zuffa with the lone loss coming to #1 contender Michael McDonald in which he hung well.  Moraga’s power and boldness will help him out point his opponent in an interesting close fight.
WINNER-John Moraga by Decision

The Ultimate Fighter 16 Reesults: KO's & Mullets Rule The Day

Main Card (FX):
Roy Nelson
TKO’s Matt Mitrione at 2:58 of the very 1st round.  The men exchanged early looking for openings when “Meathead” got hit and lost his mouthpiece.  A “Big Country” uppercut reels Mitrione who hits the canvas and covers up as Roy puts in the finishing touches.  A nice emphatic win for Nelson and maybe someday Shane Carwin can get healthy enough for a damn fight with Roy.

Colton Smith defeats Mike Ricci by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26) to become the season 16 TUF winner.  The toy soldier did it by smothering a Lightweight for 15 minutes in unimpressive fashion.

Pat Barry
KO’d Shane Del Rosario 26 seconds into round 2.  A mixed kickboxing attack won Del Rosario the 1st round but “Hype or Die” doesn’t need much opportunity to change a fight around.  Shane got a little overaggressive in the 2nd and Pat rocks him with a killer overhand right.  Pat erupts all over Shane who collapses against the cage in a stunning finish of power.

Melvin Guillard vs. Jamie Varner was canceled due to illness.  Varner became ill after the tough weight cut and the fight will now take place at UFC 155.  Melvin is a little upset after Jaime sent the NSAC into his locker room after Varner alerted them that Guillard might be “greasing” and then the fight got completely cancelled.  This should to some interesting trash talk leading up to the 2nd attempt at the fight.

Dustin Poirier submits Jonathan Brookins via D’arce Choke at 4:15 of round uno.  The Zen Kid looked strong out of the gate using vastly improved striking to keep “Diamond” on his heels.  Poirier dug in his heels and landed a crisp hook that wobbled Jon.  Brookins looks in trouble and shoots on Dustin as the two fall into the D’arce Choke leaving Jonathan no choice but to tapout after starting so strong!
Prelims (Fuel TV):
Mike Pyle
TKO’s the shit outta James Head at 1:55 of round 1.  The old man is now 7-3 for Zuffa and riding a 3 fight winning streak all by brutal (T)KO in the 1st round.  “Quicksand” is really known for his submission game but he has really turned on some impressive striking as of late.  Joe Silva needs to hook this guy up with better opponents and get him off the TUF undercard for christ’s sake!

Johnny Bedford KO’d  Marcos Vinicius a minute into the 2nd round.  Bedford did it with striking an a well placed soccer kick to the body.

Rustam Khabilov pulled 3 northern lights suplexes out on Vinc Pichel by KOing him at 2:15 of a single, brutal round.  The Russian pulled an amazing debut putting together suplexes like Eddie Guerrero in his heyday.  Can’t wait to see what this guy can do against a real opponent.

TJ Waldburger submits Nick Catone by Triangle Choke in the 2nd round.  TJ put some strikes together that hurt Catone and I don’t know if anybody can hang with this kid on the floor.  TJ is impressive, young, and always going for the finish.  This guy is a true prospect to watch in the coming year!
Prelims (Facebook):
Hugo Viana TKO’d Reuben Duran at 4:05 of the very popular round 1.

Mike Rio submits John Cofer by Armbar at 4:11 of the last round.

Tim Elliot defeats Jared Papazian by Unanimous Decision (30-25, 30-25, 30-26) in a very 1 sided fight.
8-3 On the picks.

UFC On FX 6 Results: Pearson, Lombard, Mendes Get KO Wins

Main Card (FX)
Ross Pearson KO's George Sotiropoulos at 0:41 of the 3rd Round.  The "Real Deal" owned the night knocking down George repeatedly and putting him on the stanky leg.  How George survived the inital knockdown is anyone's guess but then Pearson relaxed and continued to hurt Sotir over and over again before the final coffin nails.  People are going to start questioning George's chin and rightly so not taking anything away from Pearson's game.
Hector Lombard gets his 1st UFC win by KOing Rousimar Palhares at 3:38 of the initial round.  Now there is the power of Lombard that we have seen in the minor leagues for so long.  Palhares tried to hang but could not withstand the power striking war between the two small sized Middleweights.
Norman Parke defeated Colin Fletcher by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) to become the Smashes Lightweight winner.
Robert Whittaker defeated Brad Scott by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) to become the Smashes Welterweight winner.  Whittaker has some real power both of his hands but I was also impressed by the Brit's well roundedness and grit.
Prelims (Fuel TV)
Chad Mendes KO'd Yaotzin Meza at 1:55 of Round 1.  We knew it was going to be a slaughter but geez.  "Money" laid out Meza and Yao went scarily stiff as a board.  Scary but impressive stuff.  "KO Of The Night"
Joey Beltran defeated Igor Pokrajac by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) to pull the MMAFO Upset Pick.
Mike Pierce defeated Seth Baczynski by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) in as standard fashion as predicted.
Ben Alloway KO'd Manuel Rodriguez with 3 seconds left in the 1st Round.
Mike Wilkinson defeated Brendan Loughnane by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Cody Donovan TKO'd Nick Penner in the 1st Round of 4:35.
7-3 on the picking nose.

The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale: Picks & Prognostications

The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale
December 15, 2012
The Joint at the Hard Rock
Las Vegas, Nevada
Main Card (FX):
Roy Nelson
(17-7) vs. Matt Mitrione (5-1)  "Meathead" steps in for the oft injured Shane Carwin to battle "Big Country" in a Heavyweight slugfest.  Matt hasn't been in the game nearly as long as Nelson who has seen it all and faced some of the best competition in the world while Mitrione froze against the middler Cheick Kongo and then took a long layoff.  Both men have good strong hands and very strong beards though Roy's is much longer.  Nelson can also Jiu-Jitsu you while Matt tends to avoid the ground game though he has been working diligently with the Blackzilians in Florida.  I like Mitrione a lot but this just seems like too much too soon for "Meathead."  Nelson tests the will of Mitrione and the real question is whether or not this Heavyweight tilt can go 25 minutes?
WINNER-Roy Nelson by Decision

Colton Smith (5-1) vs. Mike Ricci (8-2)  Rory MacDonald's "partner" Ricci is in the finals against some other guy I did not see as I didn't watch TUF 16 like most of the MMA world.  Sprawl and brawl as the striker avoids the ground to an unnecessary points win.
WINNER-Mike Ricci by Decision

Pat Barry (7-5) vs. Shane Del Rosario (11-1) Oh, this is going to be a fun fight.  I'm a big fan of Del Rosario and am so happy to see him back from the loss to impressive Stipe Miocic and from the debilitating car accident before that.  Shane had his moments against Stipe but now after a tough Zuffa debut I expect a better Rosario than ever before.  Pat is Pat.  The guy is a high level kickboxer who is prone to make mistakes in fights but can KO anybody.  The problem is that Pat is a one trick pony who is fighting a well rounded mixed martial artist.  Barry always has the one punch hail mary chance at winning but the percentages are highly in Shane's favor.
WINNER-Shane Del Rosario by Rd.2 Submission

Melvin Guillard (30-11-2) vs. Jamie Varner (20-7-1)  A couple of controversial MMA figures meet in a who is going to make the predictable giant mistake first, bout.  The not so "Young Assassin" has come so close to title shots but always seems to shit the bed and is coming off a brutal KO loss to Donald Cerrone taking him to 1-3 in his last 4 bouts.  Varner the former WEC Lightwieght kingpin came in on short notice to destroy prospect Edson Barboza in shocking fashion.  Varner fell back to Earth against Joe Lauzon who has beaten both men just for the record.  Both of these pricks can bang but the power advantage is obvious for Melvin.  Jaime just has a far better arsenal and as long as he can avoid the KO strike he can out wrestle Guillard and frustrate him into a submission.  Its gonna be a close one but ya gotta lean toward the smarter fighter.
Upset Pick WINNER-Jaime Varner by Decision

Dustin Poirier (12-2) vs. Jonathan Brookins (13-5)  Brookins is such a nice kid but his stand up is terrible and ineffective.  If Brookins can get someone to the floor he can work some Jiu-Jitsu magic but takedowns will be hard to come by against the documentary Fightville star.  "Diamond" saw his title hopes dashed against the "Korean Zombie" and changed worlds moving to train with ATT.  I really like this move to revitalize Poirier and take him to a new level.  Dustin has all the skills to make it to the top of the division while Brookins is very tough but limited in his game.  Poirier gets comfy and Jon gets beat.
WINNER-Dustin Poirier by Decision
Prelims (Fuel TV):
Mike Pyle
(23-8-1) vs. James Head (9-2)  The veteran Xtreme Couture fighter comes in on a two fight winning streak shocking people as the submission specialist is now knocking fools out at age 37!  Head also has the same winning streak and has really overwhelmed opponents with aggressive grappling and just all around toughness.  This will be a really close fight but Pyle is just too crafty using his high MMA IQ to sneak by James.
WINNER-Mike Pyle by Decision

Johnny Bedford (18-9-1) vs. Marcos Vinicius (6-0)  Bedford took a year off after destroying Louis Gaudinot in his big dance debut.  "Brutal" is very well rounded and likes to impose his will bullying opponents in defeat which is exactly what he is going to do here.  Its gonna get ugly as Marcos tries to survive a beating.
WINNER-Johnny Bedford by Rd.3 TKO

Vinc Pichel (6-0) vs. Rustam Khabilov (14-1)  The Jackson/Winkeljohn Russian is making his UFC debut and that means sambo!  Zinc (sic) is a striker who hasn't faced this level of opponent and is basically here to get Rustam warm to the Octagon.
WINNER-Rustam Khabilov by Decision

TJ Waldburger (15-7) vs. Nick Catone (9-3)  An interesting bout between the single minded wrestling of Catone and the submission link game of Waldburger.  Nick can show himself to be on point and solid in grappling but he lacks damaging offense and imagination.  TJ uses innovation at every turn throwing up constant sub attempts and confusing you into a mistake which he pounces on snapping your limbs or choking you to blackness.  At some point TJ will put something together to put him in the running for "Submission Of The Night."
WINNER-TJ Waldburger by Rd.3 Submission
Prelims (Facebook):
Reuben Duran (8-3-1) vs. Hugo Viana (6-0)  The grappler takes things into his world avoiding the striking of popular card nickname "Wolverine" and showcasing his belly tattoo.
WINNER-Reuben Duran by Decision

Mike Rio (8-1) vs. John Cofer (7-2)  This bout has "eh" written all over it.  The "Wolverine" makes his Zuffa debut against the last out KO'd Cofer.  I don't care who wins but I like Weapon-X so we'll ride with the X-Man.
Upset Pick WINNER-Mike Rio by Decision

Tim Elliot (8-3-1) vs. Jared Papazian (14-8)  The wittle guys come together for a scrap and I was impressed by Elliot in his loss to John Dodson.  Tim is very creative and not afraid to let it all fly in the cage while Jared has lost two in a row and is seeking this new weight class to try and find some footing.  It doesn't happen as Elliot gets more work done for the judges favor.
WINNER-Tim Elliot by Decision

UFC On FX 6 Sotiropoulos vs Pearson: Picks & Prognostications

UFC on FX 6: Sotiropoulos vs. Pearson
December 14, 2012

I don't know anything about the Australian version of the Ultimate Fighter called the Smashes (?), but there are 4 good bouts on here and Chad Mendes gets to destroy someone on TV for free.  The picks are really phoned in but time is of the essence and this card did not inspire.
Main Card (FX):
George Sotiropoulos
(14-4) vs. Ross Pearson (13-6) The Aussie was brought down to Earth losing his last 2 fights after compiling an impressive 8 fight winning streak.  Ross can’t decide whether to fight at 145 or 155 which is never a good thing.  George wins on the ground while Ross wins standing but you have to favor the homeboy in a close bout.
WINNER-George Sotiropoulos by Decision

Robert Whittaker (Team Australia) vs. Brad Scott (Team UK) Its the Smashes Welterweight final with two men I have yet to hear or care about.
WINNER-Robert Whittaker by Reputation

Colin Fletcher (Team UK) vs. Norman Parke (Team UK) In the Lightweight Smashes final we have two more guys I don’t know or have time to research.  “Freakshow” looks very scary so I’ll go with him.
WINNER-Colin Fletcher by Rd.2 TKO

Hector Lombard (31-3-1) vs. Rousimar Palhares (14-4)  Well Hector sure shit the bed in his UFC debut just standing in front of Tim Boestch and doing little else.  The tank facade of Palhares crumbled in his last fight when Alan Belcher beat Rousimar at his own game and now we have two Middleweights in desperate need of a win.  You never know what Palhares is going to do in a fight, except for something head scratching.  Lombard is an adopted Aussie and should be quite aggressive this time out in search of the big win.  Lombard finds his way avoiding the takedowns and putting the Brazilian away.
WINNER-Hector Lombard by Rd.2 TKO
Prelims (Fuel TV):
Chad Mendes (12-1) vs. Yaotzin Meza (18-7)  Meza takes the fight on short notice and takes a beating.  This is as close to a “lock” in MMA as you are going to get.
WINNER-Chad Mendes by Rd.1 TKO

Igor Pokrajac (25-9) vs. Joey Beltran (14-8)  There ain’t nobody tougher than the “Mexicutioner” and the “Duke” is becoming known for making dumb decisions in the Octagon.  Nobody is picking Beltran but MMAFO as Joey absorbs what he needs to and just out hearts Pokrajac in an exciting bout!
Upset Pick WINNER-Joey Beltran by Decision

Mike Pierce (15-5) vs. Seth Baczynski (18-8)  Mike may get no love from the fans but the dude is solid.  Seth has come along well but he will quickly learn Pierce is on another level.
WINNER-Mike Pierce Rd.3 G&P

Other Prelims
Benny Alloway (Team Australia) vs. Manny Rodriguez (Team Australia)
W-Alloway
Brendan Loughnane (Team UK) vs. Mike Wilkinson (Team UK)
W-Wilkinson
Nick Penner (11-2) vs. Cody Donovan (7-2)
W-Donovan

UFC On Fox 5 Results: Massive KO's Abound In An Exciting Night

UFC On Fox 5: Henderson vs. Diaz Results

Main Card (FOX)
Benson Henderson defeated Nate Diaz by Unanimous Decision to retain his Lightweight title.  Nate had nothing to offer “Bendo” as “Smooth” took apart his legs and bashed the 209 rep with improved striking as well.  It was just ugly as Nate got knocked down at least 3 times though he always recovered to continue fighting.

Alexander Gustafsson defeated Mauricio Rua by Unanimous Decision taking a giant step forward in his young career.  “Shogun” fought well early (as always) but began to fade as the “Mauler” got into his rhythm.  Rua landed some staunch shots but Alex proved to have a strong beard as well as a better game plan.  Its going to be rough going from here on out for the “Shogun” but Gustafsson is just that much closer to a title shot.  "Fight Of The Night"

Rory MacDonald
destroyed B.J. Penn by Unanimous Decision in an absolute route.  BJ looked gassed out in just over a minute confirming suspicians that he had NOT trained hard for this fight and it was all a payday ruse.  Rory did as he pleased, taunting the former great and Penn just struggled not to die.  It was terrible and Rory called out Carlos Condit for a rematch to avenge his only loss.

Matt Brown KO’s Mike Swick in Round 2.  The “Immortal” had Swick in all sorts of trouble early threatening with a darce choke and then a triangle choke controlling the entire round though Mike did a good job of defending the submission attempts.  Swick seems unsure of what to do in the 2nd as he tries pressing Matt against the cage.  Once they separate Brown attacks with a left hook followed instantly by a right hand that lamps Swick to bed for the evening.  So much for “Quick’s” iron chin.
Prelims (FX)
Yves Edwards
KO’d Jeremy Stephens at 1:55 of the 1st Round!
Both men come out jockying for position throwing early and often as Edwards moves out of range time and again.  Both men come in swinging but its the counter right hook of the “Master of Thugjitsu” that lands flush turning Jeremy’s head back.  Stephens hits the deck and Yves drops some extra punishment as the lights go completely out and the referee stops the beatdown. Yves Edward wins by KO to tie the record for most UFC wins in the Lightweight division!  When Joe Rogan interviewed the “Original Gangsta” after the fight Yves said while watching the replay, “Damn that’s smooth.”  Indeed it was!
Raphael Assuncao defeated Mike Easton by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27).  The “Hulk” thought he had it but he did not.  Assuncao was more effective and Mike just couldn’t get things going in this lackluster fight.

Ramsey Nijem defeated Joe Proctor by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) in a fun little fight.

Daron Cruickshank KO’d Henry Martinez via Head Kick in the 2nd Round (2:57) of a vicious fight!  These two came out and put on one of the best single rounds of the year.  Daron was unloading a bevy of strikes backed by varying kicks but Martinez ate them all and pressed the action forward.  It was a front kick to the body that seemed to really hurt the cringing and now bloody Henry sending him retreating to the cage.  Daron followed up with kick after kick after kick to the sides of Martinez but the fighter would not go down!  The punishment continued with Cruickshank wondering what he had to do to get the finish and the crowd was roaring their approval.  In the 2nd, Daron seemed to be catching his breath a bit while Henry kept pressuring.  Cruickshank throws a right head kick that just folds up Henry and Daron walks away knowing the fight is ova!  Wow, what an entertaining bout.  Martinez showed serious heart and fortitude while Daron just unloaded an impressive offense in a stellar performance.  “KO Of The Night”

Abel Trujillo TKO’d Marcus Levesseur in the 2nd Round (3:56) with vicious knees to the body.

Dennis Siver defeated Nam Phan by Unanimous Decision (30-24, 30-25, 30-26).  Ze German did as he pleased to little Phan who took a beating.
Prelim (Facebook)
Scott Jorgensen submits John Albert by RNC in the 1st Round at 4:59!! Scotty J got the takedown early and survived a nice sweep by Albert to get back in top control.  John threw up the triangle choke which seemed very, very close to finishing “Young Guns.” Rufio escaped into side control and then took the back of the “Prince” sinking in the RNC that was sooo deep that Albert tapped out with only 1 second left in the round!  “Submission Of The Night”
7-4 on the picks yo.

UFC On Fox 5: Picks & Prognostications

UFC on Fox 5
December 8, 2012
Key Arena
Seattle, Washington

Main Card (Fox):
Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson (17-2) vs. Nate Diaz (16-7)  “Smooth” defends his title against the 209 fighter who had a breakthrough ’12.  Ben will come in with size (muscle) on Nate as well as a leg kick game the Diaz brothers struggle with, stellar wrestling and takedowns which is also the bane of the Cesar Gracie kin.  Henderson will be looking to mat fight all evening while Nate tries to get his non-stop striking and taunting game in action.  I don’t see things going well for Nate as he gets man handled much like he did against a similar Rory MacDonald (see 2 fights later).  Hurting Ben early and shaking his confidence will be as difficult as it is to submit the guy which no one has been able to do save for unknown Rocky Johnson way back in ’07 which was Henderson’s 3rd professional bout.  Diaz will make it fun all the way to the finish but the percentages are solidly against him here.  Despite all of this, I am picking Nate Diaz to win because fuck it!  Its a fight and the 209 know how to scrap.  Strap on the mean mug and put up the double finger salute.  “Can I get an amen?”
Upset Pick WINNER-Nate Diaz by Decision

Mauricio Rua
(21-6) vs. Alexander Gustafsson (14-1) The years seem to be grinding “Shogun” down as he suffered in a war with Dan Henderson and snuck past a terrible Brandon Vera in August.  “Shogun’s” endurance is always a question in his feast or famine UFC career.  Gustafsson is built long and lean with crisp striking not unlike the Champion who beat Rua so bad you’d of thought Jon Jones was fighting Murilo which does not bode well.  The only mark on the “Mauler’s” record came to wrestler Phil Davis who showed him he needed work on his grappling game and then Alex was smart enough to join up with “Mr.Wonderful” to do the work.  However, this is a new level of competition for Alex and after a minute into the fight when Rua looks gassed out, “Shogun” may still be able to go 25 minutes at a prodding zombie like pace.  I feel time has brought down Rua and the end will be coming sooner rather than later for his career.  Alexander can use angles in his striking far more effectively but he must be aware of the blitzkrieg attack of “Shogun” which can put any man unconscious in seconds.  Gustafsson employs a more dare I say, safe, game plan becoming more confident and aggressive late for the judges approval.
WINNER- Alexander Gustafsson by Decision

Rory MacDonald (13-1) vs. BJ Penn (16-8-2)  This has turned into a nice grudge match with Penn asking the notably acne riddled Rory to do more drug testing and Rory angrily accepting and complaining about the process the entire way.  Now we have the legend that is BJ coming back from the brink of retirement, in amazing shape with a legendary camp, which we have heard a thousand times and I believe even before his last fight against Nick Diaz who bludgeoned him into an almost retirement.  The comparison is fair as the fellow Tristar combatant is comparable to Champion GSP in many ways whom BJ fought, and lost to, twice.  MacDonald is a stellar wrestler with decent hands but an unyielding will and stamina.  The Canadian will be looking to get the top game in gear against Penn smashing the will out of the Hawaiian who is nearly impossible to tap out though Rory won’t be looking for that anyway.  Has anyone else noticed, BJ does not have a very impressive record and that is rightfully why he isn’t mentioned in the top tier of talent anymore.  The “Prodigy” hasn’t had an impressive outing since ’09 when he almost killed Diego Sanchez.  I expect BJ to have his moments in the fight but as things move along he will shrink against the pressure as he tends to do.  Then people will really be debating his legacy as he has gone 1-3-1 in his last 5 Zuffa bouts!  MacDonald and Mike Ricci will then celebrate on a shopping spree.
WINNER-Rory MacDonald by Rd.3 TKO

Mike Swick (15-4) vs. Matt Brown (15-11) Despite my hopes, Brown has hung around winning 3 bouts in a row against the bottom rung of the Welterweight division.  Swick has returned from a 2 year hiatus to KO yet another bottom feeder.  Mike easily has the better game in all facets but Matt is stubbornly tough and could shake the fragile confidence of the AKA man.  If Swick gets moving fast and often he should take this thing running away as both men have great chins but Mike just has more skill.
WINNER-Mike Swick by Decision

Prelims(FX):
Yves Edwards (41-18-1) vs. Jeremy Stephens (20-8)  It was good of the “Lil Heathen” not to get arrested this time before the bout though there is still time left.  We have the fight scheduled again, as the master of “Thugjitsu” pushes on in his storied but fading MMA career.  Yves must avoid the power shot that has rendered him unconscious and put him on his ass in losing efforts prior.  As I stated before in October, I don’t like the odds here for the “Original Gangster.”  The “Master Of Thugjitsu” is going to need every trick in his arsenal to hurt the “Lil Heathen.”  Jeremy isn’t special but he hits like a train and has a granite jaw.  Its going to be hard for Yves to counter and keep up with Jeremy’s continual work and find a submission as well.  Tough night for the “OG” but here’s hoping for the Upset.
WINNER-Jeremy Stephens by Decision

Raphael Assuncao (18-4) vs. Mike Easton (13-1)  Here we have a couple of limited talents who seem to get the most out of their basic skills.  Assuncao is tough but relies heavily on his Jiu-Jitsu skills and can be out worked by ambitious fighters.  The “Hulk” seems like a strong striker but he usually just gets workman like decisions staying just a tad ahead of his opponents on strength.  Mike is determined enough to get the job done in what portends to be a bland bout.
WINNER-Mike Easton by Decision

Ramsey Nijem (6-2) vs. Joe Proctor (8-1)  The Pit Elevated fighter seems to be improving each time out relying on his wrestling but improving the hands as well since his TUF days.  Joe is as bland as they come not looking relevant anywere.  Take Nijem on spirit if nothing else.
WINNER-Ramsey Nijem by Rd.3 TKO

Daron Cruikshank (11-2) vs. Henry Martinez (9-2) I don’t know much about Daron save for he is a svelte fella who likes to strike and is getting his 1st shot at the big time.  Henry is a Jackson/Winkeljohn fighter who missed weight and prefers the ground.  Flip a coin.
WINNER-Daron Cruickshank by Rd.2 TKO

Dennis Siver (20-8) vs. Nam Phan (18-10) Ze German lookz pretty good at ze Featherweight where Phan steps in at the last minute to do his thing which is to always make a fight competitive but not win.  Siver has the power and those darn spin kicks that Nam should be throwing.  It should be a fun fight but Dennis smashes Phan with an iron cross.
WINNER-Dennis Siver by Decision

Prelims (Facebook):
Scott Jorgensen (13-6) vs. John Albert (7-3) Scotty J is back after a 2 fight losing skid for the 1st time in his career to face “Prince” who has also lost back to backs.  “Young Guns” has the power, grappling, and technique to get the job done as long as he avoids the power punch.  Scotty J gets it done either using the smart plan of wrestling or by smashing John in a boxing match.
WINNER-Scott Jorgensen by Decision

Tim Means vs. Abel Trujillo has been cancelled since Tim fell in the sauna knocking himself unconscious and out of the fight.

Michael Chiesa vs. Marcus LeVesseur has been cancelled due to illness.

Abel Trujillo (9-4) vs Marcus LeVesseur (22-6) Well after the two mishaps mentioned above, we have hodge podged together a Lightweight bout.  “Killa” is an imposing looking Blackzilian on a 4 fight winning streak making his Zuffa debut.  The “Prospect” is 1-1 in the UFC and is well rounded.
WINNER-Abel Trujillo by Decision
