MMA Melee: Shamrock, Byrd, & KGB Lee

MMA Melee: The News

Frank Shamrock will step in for an injured Dan Henderson at RIZIN's 2017 World Grand Prix to face fellow legend Kazushi Sakuraba in a grappling match.

Two of the douchiest fighters in all of MMA, Tony Ferguson and Fabricio Werdum got into a heated argument that can be viewed here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giR3lTjNlYU Its difficult to imagine two worse human beings but maybe the world will get lucky and they'll end each other.

Horrible boxing and MMA judge, Adelaide Byrd, has been "benched" from her duties after a career of terrible decisions and the debacle that followed her controversial scoring of Canelo Alvarez versus Gennady Golovkin. The Nevada Athletic Commission executive director Bob Bennett stated Byrd needed "a break" and to "take a breather." Adelaide should be fired from her position after a showing her complete lack of insight time and time again in various combat sports.

Andrea "KGB" Lee (8-2) has been pulled from the UFC 216 card as she failed a PED test in '16 for diuretics and under USADA regulations, she must undergo a 6-month drug screening program. Its irony at its finest as Lee was to face Kalindra Faria to replace the cancelled bout between Paige VanZant (who was injured) and Jessica Eye.

And soooo, MMAFO is on an awful losing streak in the nose picking game. The abysmal results are as follows.

                    UFC 215 4-7
UFC Fight Night 116 5-5
UFC Fight Night 117 6-4
              Bellator 183 2-4

BELLATOR 183 Henderson vs. Pitbull: Picks, Prognostications + Odds

Benson Henderson (24-7) -220 vs. Patricky Freire (17-8) +180

Things have not gone well for "Bendo" as the former UFC Lightweight Champion as he lost his Welterweight experiment to Andrey Koreshkov, then got lucky when Patricio Freire got injured in his 2nd outing, and last out got routed by Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler (though there is no shame in that). Henderson has always been a points fighter who tries to steal rounds in the final moments, but there is no doubt the guy is talented and can squirm his way out of almost any submission.

Brother "Pitbull" is coming to defend his brother bringing knockout power and a so-so all around game.

Patty will need to land that big bomb and we'll always love the guy for destroying the cunt Josh Thomson, but he's just an average competitor facing a far better athlete. Freire is going to come forward allowing Henderson to counter and stay out of danger while using his non-stop kicks. Finally, if Pat has proven anything with his resume, he can't win against top tier talent.

WINNER-Benson Henderson by Decision

Roy Nelson (22-14) -240 vs. Javy Ayala (10-5) +200

"Big Country" has arrived in Bellator to mix up the Heavyweight division. At the age of 41, Nelson has made the move after last losing in the UFC in April. Roy is known for his chin of granite and sick knockout power. Keep in mind Nelson hasn't been putting out the most effort in recent years and its doubtful he'll find inspiration now.

Ayala is 5-2 in Bellator and coming off his Upset win over Sergei Kharitonov last November. "Eye Candy" is also a big hitter but far less proven.

We'll have to ride with Roy until he proves he can't hang in the lower promotion. Javy needs to prove he can maintain any semblance of cardio past the 2nd round.

WINNER-Roy Nelson by Rd.2 TKO

#8 Lorenz Larkin (18-6) -275 vs. Paul Daley (39-15-2) +235

Remember the last time "Semtex" fought and got thoroughly embarrassed by Rory MacDonald? That was fucking great! Daley is a piece of shit with bombs in his hands and an unprofessional streak in his DNA. There is not much left in Paul and retirement is on the horizon.

The "Monsoon" lost his Bellator debut/title match in June to Champion Douglas Lima, but he is still a savvy fighter who can kickbox with the best of them. People are saying there is a "gentleman's agreement" and these guys will strike on the feet which is just stupid. Why not get a much needed win by competing in your opponents weakest area? Larkin is smarter than that and though we think he can win on the feet as well, here's hoping he takes Daley down just to piss off the Brit bitch.

WINNER-Lorenz Larkin by Decision

Adam Piccolotti (9-0) -160 vs. Goiti Yamauchi (21-3) +140

Jiu-Jitsu war! The "Gooch" has 17 submission wins in his career and a 9-2 record in Bellator.

However, "Pickle" has a decent jab he can work behind as well as hanging with Yamauchi if they go to the canvas. Go with the undefeated and more well rounded competitor.

WINNER-Adam Piccolotti by Decision

Aaron Pico (0-1) -700 vs. Justin Linn (7-3) +500

Has any highly touted prospect ever had a worse debut ever in MMA? Signed to Bellator when he was only 18, Pico trained for two years making his debut in June, and was promptly rocked by and uppercut, dropped, and submitted in just 0:24 by Zach Freeman. Yeesh! As humiliating as the initial outing was for "Rosco Pico Train," these things happen and he is just a youngster beginning his MMA career. Aaron is also training at well respected AKA and is moving down in weight to 145. All of these things and the fact that you just never truly know what will happen in MMA, gives Pico a pass. The kid is a highly decorated wrestler and he'll like come out with a more measured approach while trying to get comfortable in the cage and wrestling Linn into the ground (who has lost his last 2 bouts). All is not lost and Aaron gets back to .500.

WINNER-Aaron Pico by Decision

Brooke Mayo (0-1) vs. Kaytlin Neil (0-2)

"Hold The" Mayo lost her MMA debut in February when she suffered a nasty eye injury the closed her orb completely! Now Brooke has found a home at Team Alpha Male and trains alongside the stellar Cynthia Calvillo. Mayo is Jiu-Jitsu based but is looking to show her skills on the feet as well. Neil has been sent as fodder for the lovely lass and will be dispatched with prejudice.

WINNER-Brooke Mayo by Decision

UFC Fight Night 117 St. Preux vs. Okami: Picks, Prognostications + Odds

September 23, 2017
Saitama Super Arena
Saitama, Japan

Main Card on FXX: (9 CT)

Ovince Saint Preux (20-10) -550 vs. Yushin Okami (34-10) +425

Good guy OSP. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua goes down with his 92nd knee injury, and the Tennessean accepts a replacement on very short notice to save the Main Event. Nice.

St. Preux comes into this contest needing a big "name" win to re-energize his career. Things started out great for Ovince but when he faced the elite of the division (Jon Jones, Jimi Manuwa, and Volkan Oezdemir) he found himself contending with a 3 fight losing streak. OSP rebounded in April when he defeated Marcos de Lima, but it was an apparent step down in competition. A win is a win though nonetheless. St. Preux is quick knockout power in his hands and a knack for finding odd submissions when given opportunity. The man is talented and its just a crying shame he never made the move to an elite MMA camp that could have elevated his game.

Welcome home "Thunder" Okami!! Perennial contender and Japanese hero, Yushin was bounced from the UFC in '13 after but a single loss. Some fans find Okami "boring" but the guy is a talented grappler, and monstrously strong for any weight class. Yushin amassed a 13-5 record in the UFC over 7 years and earned a title shot during his regime. Since exiting to smaller promotions (such as the WSOF), Okami has gone 5-2 and is on a 4 fight winning streak.

Now at 36, "Thunder's" prime days are behind him, but that does not mean he isn't dangerous or to be trifled with. Experience is worth a lot in this sport and this is by no means a gimme for OSP. St. Preux has been known to make mistakes in the cage and he's facing a grappling aficionado. Still, OSP should have the advantage standing with his power, and is the better striker. However, if Okami can slow this thing down, and wear on his foe, he may be able to grind this out in a slow burn. MMAFO will be rooting for the grizzled veteran, but OSP likely puts his hands on Yushin to spoil his return though he'll get another chance for stepping up so courageously.

WINNER-Ovince Saint Preux by Rd.2 TKO

#2 Claudia Gadelha (15-2) -280 vs. #5 Jessica Andrade (16-6) +240

Oooh, we've got a barn burner here folks! Two of the nastiest and most talented Brazilian fighters clash to see who remains near the top of the Strawweight division. Who wants to be the #2 woman in the 115 division?

"Claudinha" has only lost, in her entire career, to Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk (twice). Gadelha is a dominant wrestler in every since of the word. Whether she is rag dolling bitches around like nothing, or relentlessly punishing them on the canvas, the Brazilian is brutal and without mercy. Claudia's striking is rudimentary but slowly improving and she is not without skill standing.

"Bate Estaca" has found new life dropping down to Strawweight going 3-0 until meeting Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk and falling as all do. Andrade is an absolute tank with stunning power on the feet and strong grappling skills as well.

Flip a coin here as both ladies are looking to annihilate each other. We have seen more consistency from Gadelha she has more countering options in what should be an exciting war down to the last moment.

WINNER-Claudia Gadelha by Decision

Takanori Gomi (35-13, 1) +315 vs. Dong Hyun Kim (14-8-3) -380

Oh Gomi, how long have we loved thee and for the 3 years he hasn't even been trying. In fact, Tak has even bragged that he has been training with beer which is a bit insulting to his fans. Anywho, there is no denying our devotion to the "Fireball Man" at this point. Having followed the once greatest Lightweight on the planet since 2004, MMAFO is a bit emotionally invested in our giant headed warrior. Gomi has been given a final chance to redeem the last few years and a grotesque losing streak in his homeland before his adoring fans.

The "Maestro" got his 1st win in the UFC last December after losing his 1st two bouts in the largest American MMA promotion. Kim is happy to get wild and out-of-control like his counterpart but he has far less wear on the tires and seemingly desire.

History seems to tell us this will end in tears as Gomi puts out minimal effort before getting thrashed on the ground.

WINNER-Dong Hyun Kim by Rd.2 TKO

Gökhan Saki (0-1) -165 vs. Henrique da Silva (12-3) +145

The "Turkish Tyson" has arrived in the UFC to breathe some life into the 205 division. The 33 year old is a decorated kickboxer (83-12-1) who fought for 15 years in Glory as well as K-1. Saki has tons of fighting experience but has only competed once in MMA, when he was TKO'd in '04. Gokhan has not competed in the last couple of years as he has been preparing for a return to MMA. Obviously, the man is a skilled and deadly kickboxer, the question is whether or not he'll be able to remain upright against his more well rounded opponents.

"Frankenstein" has lost 3 in a row and was obliterated by Ion Cutelaba in 0:22 this past June. Henry has 11 (T)KO finishes to his credit but he is struggling to find the win column.

This is a set-up by the UFC. Saki is meant to be tested by da Silva, but not win. These two men are going to throw bones until somebody falls down, and you have to side with the veteran Gokhan to win this showcase and inflict damage in his highly anticipated debut.

WINNER-Gokhan Saki by Rd.2 KO

Teruto Ishihara (10-4-2) -155 vs. Rolando Dy (8-5-1, 1) +135

Ishihara returns home to the land of the rising son, still struggling to find his way in the UFC. The Team Alpha Male fighter has swagger for days, but lacks the smarts and ability to contend against any serious threats. Teruto is a pretty fun striker to watch though and brings the battle his "bitches" love.

Dy guy lost his initial UFC bout via eye injury in June, and he's not going to last long.

Ishihara should dominate in style as he is want to do, while Rolando should be journeying back to the minor leagues sooner rather than later.

WINNER-Teruto Ishihara by Decision

Mizuto Hirota (19-8-2) +165 vs. Charles Rosa (11-3) -190

"Boston Dumb" has been alternating wins and losses since joining the UFC and he's a rigid grappler out of ATT.

"Pugnus" is also a robotic fighter, though on the striking side.

Rosa gonna getchoo pregnant Hirota.

WINNER-Charles Rosa by Decision

* Hirota badly missed weight and literally stumbled on and off the scales after what appears to be a dangerous weight cut.

Prelims Card on FXX: (7 CT)

Keita Nakamura (32-8-2, 1) +120 vs. Alex Morono (13-4) -140

"K-Taro" has shown promise as of late but the talent has yet to manifest in wins.

The "Great White" likes to bring combinations in assault form using volume to distress rivals.

Eh, though this should be fun, this will likely fly under the radar for fans. We expect a striking battle and Morono to drain the energy from Nakamura resulting in a judges nod.

WINNER-Alex Morono by Decision

#7 Jussier da Silva (19-5) -450 vs. Yuta Sasaki (20-4-2) +360

"Formiga" must have this win if he is to remain a player at Flyweight. Jussier was inexplicably passed over for a deserved title shot a few times and then came the losses. Da Silva has only lost to the upper echelon of the division, but has done so consistently. The Brazilian is a solid grappler but has never finished a foe with his hands in his entire career if that gives you a hint about his striking.

"Ulka"or "Commissioner Submissioner" as MMAFO likes to call him, likes to take big risks which usually don't pay off. Its fun to witness.

Da Silva should win this all day. The Brazilian is far more talented and will stick to a dry game plan while "Ulka" goes wild with striking to his detriment.

WINNER-Jussier da Silva by Decision

https://www.instagram.com/1ove.chan/?hl=en
Syuri Kondo (5-0) -115 vs. Chan-Mi Jeon (5-1) -105

The undefeated Kondo is making her UFC debut coming over from Pancrase and a is a former kickboxer and professional wrestler if the 2nd item does anything for ya.

The former Kama champ lost her UFC debut in June but not without showing fun spirit and the lass is only 20 years old! Jeon is exciting and throws everything she has against her rivals but she gassed badly in her debut.

This will be a fun kickboxing affair but its kinda a woman fighting a girl. We don’t mean to be insulting, but it seems that way. Kondo is more sturdy and has been through much more in the combat sports arena while Jeon, though talented, is only beginning. And if Syuri gets in trouble she has some grappling in her back pocket.

WINNER-Syuri Kondo by Decision

Shinsho Anzai (9-2) +205 vs. Luke Jumeau (12-3) -245

The Anzai "Animal" has one of the best Sherdog pictures of all time, but we digress. He's an inexplicable fan favorite who lacks a ton of skills.

"The Jedi" (respect) is on a hot 7 fight winning streak and defeated the oddball Dominique Steele for a successful debut in the promotion. The New Zealander shouldn't have too much trouble here as he takes his time and takes matters to the judges.

WINNER-Luke Jumeau by Decision

Prelim Card on UFC Fight Pass: (6 CT)

Daichi Abe (5-0) +105 vs. Hyun Gyu Lim (13-6-1) -125

The Korean Rich Franklin has found the competition in the UFC to be stiff indeed. "Ace" is a huge Welterweight but has lost his last two outings via TKO (the 1st such losses in his career). Lim tends to come strong early and should put away Abe before he gets off the starting blocks. Hyun is not as bad as his last few fights would lead you to believe.

WINNER-Hyun Gyu Lim by Rd.1 TKO

UFC 215 Johnson vs. Borg: Picks, Prognostications + Odds

September 9, 2017
Rogers Place
Edmonton, Alberta

This poor card has had the shit beaten out of it. Junior Dos Santos failed a PED test and was pulled a while ago. And a day before the weigh-ins, Ray Borg has withdrawn with an illness. This card is a disaster and with one of the weaker undercards ever, there is no saving it. It seems the UFC wanted to punish Demetrious Johnson and Amanda Nunes by forcing them to headline a card of never-will-be's, and now we may be looking at one of the least bought PPV's ever! This card would be bad for a UFC Fight Pass event but nevertheless, we struggle on.

Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson versus #4 Ray Borg has been cancelled. Borg contracted a "viral" illness and was pulled from the card. History, it seems, will have to wait.

Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes (14-4) +110 vs. #2 Valentina Shevchenko (14-2) -130 [Re-Rematch]

And here we are yet again a few months after this rematch was supposed to go down but Nunes caught the sniffles the day of the event. Despite how anyone feels about that particular snafu, we are going to try and do the damn thing again.

The "Lioness" seemed like a lovely human being, and MMAFO could not be more supportive of her being the 1st openly gay UFC Champ, but since destroying Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey, she has taken on an arrogance while seemingly worried more about her grip on the title than the skills that brought her to victory. There is no denying the striking skills of Nunes (who has gone 7-1 for the promotion) as she finished every opponent she has beaten, save for Valentina. Working with ATT has only upped her game and she now has something else to prove to the fans who say she got scurred (sic) and ran away.

For the "Bullet," things have been steadily improving. The "weakness" in her game was supposed to be her ground game and then she faced famed grappler Julianna Pena and defeated her with Jiu-Jitsu just to prove she could. Shevchenko has always been a great striker, coming over from a successful kickboxing career, and she really seems to be finding her comfort zone while keeping in immaculate shape.

It seems as though Shevchenko can withstand the initial barrage from Nunes, and then slowly ramps up the work rate for a come from behind win while becoming the new champion.

WINNER-Valentina Shevchenko by Decision

Francis Ngannou versus Junior Dos Santos has been cancelled as "Cigano" was flagged for a potential PED violation.

Gilbert Melendez (22-6) -110 vs. Jeremy Stephens (25-13) -110

Oh Gil, where did it all go wrong? Well, probably when he was screwed out of the title against Benson Henderson in'13, but we digress. The foray into the UFC has not been good for Melendez as he gained but a single win (against Diego Sanchez) while losing his other 4 efforts. It has been against the most elite competition (and 3 former champs) but then came the heartbreaking PED violation and year long suspension. Now at 35, "El Nino" is exiting his prime but he is still skilled in every area of MMA and has been around the world to see it all.

"Lil Heathen" has been up and down his entire career failing when he reached top tier talent, and doesn't have the best cage awareness. Jeremy has great power in all his striking whether knees or punches, but he's never taken the next step in his career or evolved.

This should be Melendez's bout but based upon how his UFC career has gone, you never know. Giblert (sic-Reebok) has more tools to employ and is the much smarter fighter. "El Nino" puts together enough points to finally get another win in a fun scrap.

WINNER-Gilbert Melendez by Decision

#10 Neil Magny (19-6) +165 vs. Rafael Dos Anjos (26-9) -190

RDA continues his 170 experiment after besting Tarec Saffiedine back in June. Now the former Lightweight Champion looks to stop perennial contender Neil Magny who wants back in the title hunt.

Magny beat the hapless Johny Hendricks last December and then took time off to heal injuries and slow his torrid work pace. Magny has only improved himself so it will be interesting to see what new talents he has honed. Neil has a loooooong steady jab and a massive size advantage.

RDA is stuck in-between worlds. Too big for 155 and too small for 170. This is one of those match ups where Anjos size is going to be a major disadvantage. Magny avoids the leg kicking assault and maybe even sneaks in a trip takedown or two for a sneaky close win.

Upset Pick WINNER-Neil Magny by Decision

#8 Sara McMann (11-3) -270 vs. Ketlen Vieira (8-0) +230

Now this, is the Sara McMann MMAFO expected when she joined the UFC in '13. The Olympian has run off 3 wins in a row with the last 2 being finishes. It seems as though Sara is putting it all together now and at 36 she had to get cracking. The striking is still slow but it has improved, and she always has the great grappling skills and natural power.

"Fenomeno" is 2-0 in the UFC and undefeated in her pro career. She is absolutely going to get worked by "Momma Mega Arms" who throttles her into oblivion.

WINNER-Sara McMann by Rd.2 Submission

Ilir Latifi (13-5, 1) +110 vs. Tyson Pedro (6-0) -130

The Aussie lacks experience but he's a prospect for true, but this may be too much too soon. Latifi has more tools and experience as he sledges his way to a win.

Upset Pick WINNER-Ilir Latifi by Decision

#3 Henry Cejudo (10-2) -320 vs. #5 Wilson Reis (22-7) +260

And now we have "Mighty Mouse's" leftovers facing each other in hopes of getting another chance to be embarrassed by Demetrious, again. That's a bit harsh but neither man is going to make the strides necessary to defeat the Flyweight king.

The other Olympian on the card has found his ceiling. After getting throttled by DJ, Henry lost a close fight against perpetual #2 Joseph Benavidez and he must win here if he's going to stay in the conversation.

Mr. Wilson isn't a bad fighter by any stretch, but he's a grappler facing a foe who is a much better grappler. Its highly doubtful Reis has suddenly developed a dangerous striking game at this point and he'll lose on the cards.

WINNER-Henry Cejudo by Decision

Sarah Moras (4-3) +220 vs. Ashlee Evans-Smith (5-2) -260

Even though AE-S is overrated, Moras isn't setting anything on fire either. The "Rebel Girl" is a vicious G&Per but she lacks experience. Fortunately for her, Sarah is destined to return to the minors sooner rather than later.

WINNER-Ashlee Evans-Smith by Decision

Gavin Tucker (10-0) -300 vs. Rick Glenn (19-4-1) +250

Mad respect to Gavin in taking on the "Guv'nor" nickname (give it a Google if'n you are unaware) and he has to be tough to use that moniker. Tucker will be facing an upright, slow moving Glenn whom he will outwork with a lot of strikes and aggression.

WINNER-Gavin Tucker by Decision

Mitch Clarke (11-4) +175 vs. Alex White (11-3) -210

Mitch is a pretty cool dude in interviews but he's not very athletic and needs takedowns to do his work. Unfortunately, along with his 2-4 UFC record, Clarke has only landed 18% of his takedown attempts. Mitch has moved to the MMA Lab and shown a bit of improvement in his striking but the grappling is his bread and butter.

The Mizzou "Spartan" hasn't fared much better amassing a 2-3 UFC record but he is more of a natural athlete and possesses solid takedown defense. Alex has greatly improved his striking and uses kicks more often than punches.

This is tough to pick as both men just aren't that impressive fighters and will never compete in the elite levels of the 155ers. We side with the lefty White to gain more points in what could be a slow burn of a fight.

WINNER-Alex White by Decision

Luis Henrique da Oliveira (10-3, 1) +160 vs. Arjan Bhullar (6-0) -185

Watch for WWE Champion Jinder Mahal to escort fellow Indian-Canadian Bhullar to the cage which is interesting. Arjan is a wrestler's wrestler who has competed everywhere including the Olympics. Arjan is solid but he lacks experience against any decent level of competition.

"KLB" is a big man who throws wild and gasses out about 0:15 into every fight. He's a banger but not much else and when Bhullar takes him to the ground, he'll grind him out via exhaustion.

WINNER-Arjan Bhullar by Rd.2 TKO

Kajan Johnson (21-12-1) +385 vs. Adriano Martins (28-8) -485

ATT's Martins is a large favorite for a reason here. Adriano is the better fighter everywhere and Johnson's entire body has seemingly been shattered with numerous injuries and put back together. Its just not a good combo.

WINNER-Adriano Martins by Rd.1 TKO
