Pro Wrestler Chris Benoit Murders Wife, Son, & Commits Suicide

Professional Wrestler, Chris Benoit (40), known as one of the hardest working wrestlers in the business, was found dead Sunday June 25th, along with his wife Nancy (43) and his son Daniel (7). Benoit was always known as a consummate professional who held respect and family in the highest regard. Tragically, it now appears as though Chris murdered his own family over the weekend.

Benoit was scheduled to perform in the WWE's Sunday PPV but many bizarre messages led to suspicion of his and his families condition. Benoit spoke on the phone with the VP of WWE Talent Relations, stating at first that he had missed his flight to the show. A second call was made and he then informed WWE officials that his wife and son were sick and throwing up blood, so he had to tend to the family emergency. Then, Benoit began to send text messages from his and his wife's phone that listed only his home address. The message was sent multiple times on a delay, and another text message was sent to neighbors telling them "our three dogs are outside and the door is open." The WWE put in a call to have a "welfare check" on Benoit's Georgia home. His three German Shepherds delayed entrance to the home, but once inside, Police found wife Nancy, bound at the hands and feet, with a "deep bruise" in her back and some blood that "indicated signs of a struggle." She had been strangled with an electrical chord. Daniel, the seven year old son, was found face down in his bed, and now Police say there were "no marks" on his body and he was probably asphyxiated by a bag of some form. Chris Benoit was found in his basement weight gym, hanging by the neck from the workout equipment. All were dead upon arrival.

At this time, autopsies have revealed Nancy was killed first, probably Friday, while Daniel was smothered Saturday, and finally Benoit killed himself Sunday. Toxicology reports will return in a few weeks, but prescription steroids, Human Growth Hormones, and other unspecified drugs were found in the residence. Young Daniel had "long term track marks" on his arm which officials believe show that he was being injected with HGH for quite some time. Daniel was abnormally small for his age, and the drugs may have been prescribed by a physician, but that is unconfirmed at this time. Bibles were placed beside the wife and son which many close to Benoit have found odd, because he was known to detest Religion and did not believe in it.

What could lead a successful seemingly happy family man to destroy three lives has everyone wondering. Many are blaming steroid use (roid rage) or perhaps dementia from multiple head injuries while performing in the ring (Benoit also broke his neck years ago which required aggressive surgery). The WWE ran a three hour tribute show for Benoit and his family Monday night, before details surfaced that Chris was the suspected killer. The WWE has now apologized for the tribute show, citing they did not yet know the details of the situation, and were only trying to pay respects for a fallen family member. The WWE has pulled all information and merchandise for Benoit from the website, leaving only a story with constant updates on incoming information on the case.

Yet another bizarre tragedy from the world of Professional Wrestling, in a long line of premature deaths and suicides.

BJ Penn, Nate Diaz Win, Plus Much Controversy

BJ Penn was able to avenge his haunting loss to Jens Pulver at The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale. There was never any doubt as BJ just dominated the affair from beginning to end. The 1st saw BJ landing good shots on the feet and then taking the fight to the ground. There he sunk in a seemingly fight ending armbar but Jens amazingly found a way to escape. Then Jen found himself in a deep triangle as the ref moved in awaiting the tap. The tap did not come and Jens muscled his way out to the applause of the fans. Two very tight and very amazing escapes but the round clearly went to BJ. In the 2nd, Penn came out again taking the fight to the floor and using his amazing ju jitsu he was able to take the back of Jens Pulver and use the rear naked choke to tap him out as Matt Hughes sat ringside watching his friend go out to BJ the exact same way he did many years ago.

All the animosity and trash talking went immediately out the window as the two bitter enemies became friends exchanging hugs and compliments. Its great to see the sportsmanship that always seems to come out in the end with MMA fighters. Jens and BJ now both say goodbye to the 155 division they both helped build. BJ now plans a return to the Welterweight division and a possible 3rd match with Matt Hughes, while Jens is heading down to 145 and a future title shot with WEC Champion Uriah Faber.

Nate Diaz got owned by Manny Gamburyan in the 1st though he did manage many beautiful though unsuccessful submission attempts. The 2nd saw Manny shoot immediately and dislocated his shoulder on the knee of the sprawling Diaz. Manny immediately tapped out and Nate become the season 5 "Ultimate Fighter" in unexciting fashion. I don't care, Diaz is the shit anyway and would've found a way to win somehow;)

The "Controversial Fight Of The Night" saw Gray Maynard and Robert Emerson end in a No Contest. Gray absolutely dominated the 1st round on the feet, and taking the fight to the floor. Toward the end of the initial round, Gray landed a brutal body shot that saw Emerson cringe in pain and hold his side heading to the corner in between rounds. Obviously hurt, Emerson could do little as Gray lifted him into the air and slammed him into the mat which resulted in Robert immediately tapping out. The problem was, Gray's head was in a head lock under Emerson's right arm, and he had knocked himself completely unconscious! Gray was pulled off the injured Emerson by the doctor and his eyes were open, but rolled back in his head. He laid on the mat completely out, and the Athletic Commission ruled that since neither fighter could continue, the match would be ruled a NC. Once, awake, Gray was furious stating over and over that Emerson tapped and he should've won. Me thinks me smells a rematch.

The other semi-controversial moment came when Cole Miller knocked Andy Wang down with an odd high kick. Andy was out cold at 1st, but began to recover right when the ref stepped in to stop the fight. Andy was very upset at the stoppage, but really, the guy is absolutely terrible, and how he was allowed to fight after embarrassing himself time and time again on TUF 5, is beyond me.

Matt Wiman destroyed Geraghty in just over 2 minutes and congrats to the ref who allowed 10 unanswered punches to a helpless opponent before stopping the contest.

Roger Huerta actually struggled with the very game Douglas Evans, who just plain out wrestled him to win the 1st round. Huerta looked pissed for the 2nd and turned up the action. Roger almost sunk in a rear naked choke before Evans escaped only to cover up and hide while receiving constant punches from the "Matador" on his back. Zero defense was shown though the punches weren't landing very clean, and Roger escaped with a tough win to stay in the running for the top spot in the Lightweight Division. Hmmmm, Roger Huerta vs Spencer Fisher anyone?

Joe Lauzon whipped up on his opponent while Thales Leites got a dominant win as well.

Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale Quick Picks

1st of all, the Lightweights didn't disappoint in the best TUF season to date. The fights were great and the Finale looks fab. On to the quick picks because I am short on time.

BJ Penn vs Jens Pulver 2 How can you not take BJ in the rematch with all his skills? Well, how about because people always underestimate Jens and pay the price. Pulver is motivated and ready for action, though you could say the same for BJ. An in shape BJ is a dangerous BJ (its a shame I don't have the time to make all the available blow job jokes). Odds have to be on BJ so take him in the submission win.

Nate Diaz vs Manny Gamburynan The compact hard punching Manny is dangerous from the feet or the floor. Nate is a submission wizard and this fight is an absolute draw to pick. Good luck picking this one. I'm personally rooting for Nate but I fear the KO power and fire hydrant form of Manny.

Frank Shamrock Defeats Baroni At Strikeforce/Elite XC

I bring you play by play from the actual fight! After the intro's the fight begins Phil Baroni lands punches to Frank Shamrock's body. Shamrock is fine and responds with a few shots getting comfortable, and then motions to Phil that he will put him to sleep. Cocky or a showman, it is great to watch. Frank lands a text book 3-punch combo and drops Baroni on his ass. Frank dives on top of him and delivers a brutal beating, why isn't this fight being stopped? Frank slows down but lands 2 weak punches to the back of Phil's head and the ref stands them up and takes a point away from Shamrock. Guess he has a rep after the Renzo fight. Frank continues to dominate on the feet and Baroni takes him down to survive. From his back, Shamrock lands constant punches while Baroni just absorbs them. Back to the feet and Frank again lands a combo followed by a beautiful leg kick to the body. Baroni again takes Frank down but eats a ton of body shots.

Baroni looks completely out of it as Shamrock scores at will. Back to the feet where Frank begins more taunting of Phil and then backing it up with great striking. More punches land and yet again Phil takes down Frank. You can see Shamrock talking shit to Phil from his back as he hits him while Phil just lays there. The round ends & I see it 9-8, though at the worst it is 9-9 thanks to the point deduction.

In the 2nd Frank looks tired while Baroni comes out refreshed and begins to land his power punches. The pace slows but Phil is winning the round. Baroni gets wild (as always) and allows some punches to his face. Frank tags Phil with a brutal left and it turns into a brawl! The combos continue to batter NYBA as he shoots again to stop the damage and buy time. Frank takes his time landing hammer fists and moves to Phil's back. The rear naked choke is sunk in but Baroni doesn't tap but passes out to end the fight!

Frank Shamrock wins the contest but sits on his stool absolutely exhausted as Phil Baroni is woken up by the medical staff. Once up, Phil walks over and hugs Frank (still seated) before leaving the arena to a swell of boo's. The crowd is ignorant as they should've applauded the effort of NYBA though he was just out-classed tonight. Baroni shows a lot of heart but it is Frank Shamrock who becomes the Strikeforce Middleweight Champion!

In other action, Ninja Rua becomes the Elite XC Middleweight Champion by KOing Joey Villasenor in a fight the Chute Boxe star just dominated from start to finish.

Paul Buentello got the KO win yet again over K-1's former star Carter Williams in the 2nd.

Cung Le just had his way with Tony Fryklund via an array of spectacular kicks and one has to wonder how much Tony has left in the fighting game. Le's cardio was not impressive but man that guy can strike with fists or feet, anywhere, anytime.

Josh "The Punk" Thompson just annihilated Nick Gonzalez and sunk in a rear naked choke to the surprise of no one.

Paul Daley got the upset win of the night TKOing Bang Ludwig in the 2nd.

Like we promoted before, this was a good card with some real interesting fights. Baroni/Shamrock actually lived up to the hype (which is saying a lot these days) and if these two promotions (Strikeforce/Elite XC) continue to work together they could rival the bigger MMA companies.

Strikeforce/Elite XC Shamrock vs Baroni

The Strikeforce/Elite XC show isn't a bad card from top to bottom not to mention the highly explosive and anticipated war between long time enemies Frank Shamrock and Phil Baroni. Though Baroni has never been a Top 5 contender in the Middleweight division, Frank was once the best in the world. Now they fight each other which will help the fans to know just where each fighter is at in their respective careers.

Frank Shamrock vs Phil Baroni Frank has the biggest ego in the world, while Phil has the biggest mouth. Both can punch hard, though Phil is stronger, but if Frank doesn't take this fight to the floor where Baroni sucks, he is an idiot. Cardio is an issue for Baroni, where as Shamrock can go for days, and that is how he wins a lot of his fights, by out working opponents to death and then moving in for the kill. I shouldn't see this fight going any different with all the advantages Frank has on the ground, but that ego of wanting to KO Phil does worry me a bit. Baroni can turn anyone's lights out with just one punch which he has done many times. A careful and diligent Shamrock should out point his way to a cautious victory.

Ninja Rua 13-7-1 vs Joey Villasenor 23-5 for the vacant Elite XC Middleweight Title. It all depends on who shows up. Both men have a history of being schizophrentic, and losing big time fights. Still, Joey still seems to have the advantage in most areas, especially if he takes the fight to the floor. Ninja is a sneaky vet who can pull submissions and strike (I mean he is in Chute Boxe). After that impressive win over David Louiseau, you just can't help but think Joey is on top of his game, while Rua hasn't fought the best fighters recently.

WINNER-Villasenor TKO

Paul Buentello 22-9 vs Carter Williams 3-1 I remember watching Carter for the 1st time as a 23 year old K-1 rookie who came in a dominated a legendary field to win the 2003 tournament. He has legs like tree trunks, and as a former kickboxer you know he knows how to strike. However, he has little MMA experience, and hasn't fought in any form in 3 years. Buentello is an active and precise striker who has just beautiful boxing, and actually more ground game than the green Williams. I imagine Paul wanting to out strike the K-1 star, and that will lead to his demise. Its just the 3 year long inactivity that forces be to pick Buentello in a fight that no matter who wins, will probably end in a furious 1 round affair.

Bang Ludwig 15-6 vs Paul Daly 14-6 Yet another striker's war on the card with two very evenly matched opponents. Who gets off 1st is really the question here, unless Bang is smart enough to take it to the ground for a G&P win. I still believe it stays on the feet where both men like it best, and Bang edges ahead for the win.

Josh "Punk" Thompson 11-2 vs Nick Gonzalez 11-4 Look Nick is a decent fighter, but if it weren't for his bad attitude, the aptly named Punk would be in the UFC competing for the Lightweight Title. The guy has the all around game and at a much higher level than Nick.

WINNER-Punk by submission

Cung Le 3-0 vs Tony Fryklund 14-8 In my opinion the hardest fight to pick of the night. Everyone wants to know how the legendary San Shou fighter against real competition in MMA. Well, here's the real deal. A Miletich fighter who has been in absolute wars and backs down from nothing. In the striking it won't even be close with Le taking it all day long. However, Fryklund is a wrestler and the ground game is the huge question mark in Cung's game. Cung has great sprawl and I'd imagine he will need it. Tony seems to be fading a bit in his career and this could really save his career, while answering a lot of those what if's that surround Le. An intriguing fight and one I would not bet on. By chance I'll take Cung to sprawl long enough to knock down (or possibly San Shou throw) Tony to the ground for a G&P win.

Charles Bennett 17-13-2 vs Victor Valenzuela 5-1-2 This fight was made for Bennett to win so the can promote the exciting unpredictable fighter in Elite XC after KOing their prospect KJ Noons. Unpredictable is right as at last look, Charles was still in jail after being arrested for violating his parole in Florida. If he makes it he'll win but jesus this guy is a mess.

That's all I am going to pick for the 14 fights on this card. It will be interesting to see how much gets shown in the PPV and how about 14 fights as opposed to the 8 lame fights on the last UFC PPV? Maximize your money people, this isn't a bad card. Plus Gina Carano will be there, did I mention she is hot?

MMA Grapevine News

1st and most important things 1st. Fedor Emelianenko has been talking about a contract with Bodog, K-1, and the UFC for the past week. The UFC seems to be in the lead, as long as Fedor is allowed to compete in annual Sambo competitions in Russia. The UFC is understandably worried that a Sambo injury could hurt a big contract with #1 fighter in the world, but it would be a huge mistake to let the Last Emperor slip through your fingers.

Denis Kang (ranked #6 on our Middleweight Top 10) is going to make his contract decision in the next week. It looked like Bodog had the edge with the popular fighter, especially because Kang wants to continue to fight MMA matches in his homeland of Korea, and UFC fighters are bound by exclusivity to fight only for Zuffa.

Elite XC pulled out a big signing, as Rameau Sokoudjou (who burst onto the scene in Pride FC with upset wins over Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona) in what his Team Quest camp described as a "lucrative 4 fight contract."

The MMA gods have spared the life of Ken Shamrock who was slated to face Michael Bisping in England at UFC 75. Mercifully, it seems former Ultimate Fighter Matt "What?" Hamill (who was on the same TUF season as Mike) will be brought instead, and we don't have to see a death in the octagon. Also, Mirko Cro Cop will make his return at the same April card, as he will face fellow striker Cheick Kongo. Cro Cop is coming off the worst loss of his career and a brutal KO from #1 Heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga, which landed the Croation in the highlight reels in the worst possible way, and cost him a title shot. Interesting to see how Cro Cop will return against another opponent known for KO power. Finally, UFC 75 will have the now official unification bout of the Pride FC & UFC Light Heavyweight Titles between Dan Henderson and Quinton Jackson.

In the land of free TV MMA, IFL is just terrible, and their last "event" didn't have one compelling fight the entire evening. The IFL just continues to falter and draw little attention as they head into their "playoffs" which will hopefully create some decent matches. IFL's "Battleground" show is just horrible and if these guys don't speed up the time between their fight cards and the airing of the show on TV, they just will not be able to compete with the top brands.

Bodog Fight however is beginning to not only land top talent, but their show is having some really competitive fights, and they even showed some matches from their 1st two PPV's for free on the show. A very smart move which is garnering them more attention as they begin their newest "season" of fights at the end of June. They have landed great fighters like Jake Shields, Nick Thompson, Eddie Alvarez, Roman Zentsov, Yves Edwards, Yuki Kondo, Trevor Prangley, Amar Suloev, and many more. Also curious, that in the crowd as "guests" we have seen Phil Baroni, Josh Barnett, Royce Gracie, Gilbert Melendez, and don't forget they have Matt Lindland under contract as well. Bodog has blown past the IFL in a rocket ship, and the WEC isn't far behind them.

Believe it or not, the show "Fight Girls" on the Oxygen channel, is really good. The women are kickboxers (not full MMA fighters) with actually real and compelling talent. Trained by the legendary Master Toddy, they also get to work with the gorgeous and talented Gina Carano (what else do you need). It is a reality show, so there is a lot of these beautiful ladies (and they are hot, this is no LPGA) bikini's, panties, and other small outfits if you are in to that sort of thing.

Busy busy busy weekend with The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale with Nate Diaz vs Manny Gamburyan and BJ Penn vs Jens Pulver 2, as well as the Elite XC/Strikeforce card starring Frank Shamrock and Phil Baroni so get ready for all the MMA action you can handle. Bet.

UFC 72 Results & Thoughts

So we've been off for a while and a ton of action and news has ensued. So I'll dive right in with the lackluster UFC 72.

Rich Franklin defeated Yushin Okami by decision to become the #1 contender for the Middleweight Title. Rich is guaranteed a shot at the winner of Anderson Silva/Nate Marquardt. The actual fight saw Yushin surprisingly on the run and Rich able to dominate the 1st & 2nd rounds with ease. In the 3rd, Okami came alive but too little too late as the fight went to a decision with many hardcore MMA fans wondering what was wrong with Okami, or did Rich just confuse the guy so much he just couldn't get off? Yushin actually made Rich look small for the Middleweight division, and though many including myself still see Okami easily in the Top 5, Franklin got the win in an odd though not necessarily boring fight.

Forrest Griffin cruised to victory over Hector Ramirez with a 30-27 win on all the judges cards. Forrest dominated the stand up and though he should've taken the fight to the ground, he never needed to. It was yet another case of the opponent not seeming to be awake and off his game as the 1st two rounds weren't even close, and then Forrest got on his bike in the 3rd to assure the victory. I can't really fault Forrest for the "Running Man" impression at the end, as he needed the win, and played it smart coming off his upset KO loss to Keith Jardine.

Tyson Griffin got the split decision win over Clay Guida though most people thought the fight should've gone the other way. It all came down to the last round for me, and though on his back, Tyson was more active, and Clay did very little with his position. It is a pet peeve of mine that just because you are on top, or get a takedown, that you are the one who should win the round. You must do something other than lay and pray for a win. Still, Clay needs to be brought back though he is 1-3 in the UFC. The guy is a work horse and has fought the absolute best and is always an exciting fighter.

Jason MacDonald was easily more talented than Rory Singer as he dominated his way to a TKO win in the 2nd. This was a bad match for Singer from the get go, but it gives Jason a nice win after his last loss to Rich Franklin. MacDonald is still very much in play for the 185 division, and I wouldn't mind seeing him against Yushin Okami to help round out that Top 5 of the Middleweights.

Ed Herman tapped out Scott Smith as everyone knew he would, The Irish Hand Grenade Marcus Davis KO'd Jason Tan in just over a minute surprising no one, while Eddie Sanchez (know for being manhandled by Cro Cop in Mirko's debut) and Dustin Hazelett both got wins while everyone collectively yawns.

This was not a stellar card by any stretch of the imagination, but there is some up and coming talent to watch (ie Herman, MacDonald, Griffin, Davis), but those on the losing side (except for Guida & Okami) could easily and mercifully never be seen in the UFC again. By the by, I went exactly 8-0 on my picks, but this was one of the easiest cards to pick in recent memory. Next up for the UFC is The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale.

Royce Gracie Tests Positive For Steroids!?!

MMA legend, hall of famer, pioneer, hero, Royce Gracie has tested positive for Nandrolone a common steroid. Royce has until July 13th to appeal his suspension which goes until the end of May 2008! Royce tested positive after his recent rematch with Sakuraba which he won on decision.

It is just stunning as Royce has always been a man of character and for him to do something so stupid that will ruin him in the eyes of many fans and tarnish his legacy. Royce had to know he would test positive as the California Athletic Commission tests very stringently for drugs of all types. Former Pro Football player Jonnie Morton who made his MMA debut at the same K-1 event that Gracie fought in, also has tested positive after he was KO'd in only 33 seconds.

I have yet to hear a valid excuse for using steroids in sports, and I highly doubt this situation will provide one. The only certain thing right now, is that Royce has a lot of explaining to do, and it probably won't be enough to satisfy anyone.

A Few Quick MMA News Notes

It seems as though talks between Brazilian Top Team and former Pride FC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira have inexplicably broken down. Antonio seems to have been with BTT forever but it was Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva that helped broker the deal that brought Nogueira to the UFC. Since, things have been "rough" between Big Nog and BTT. Antonio us reportedly giving thought to joining Black House, the new power team with members such as the aforementioned Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort, Ryota Machida and more. Interesting to see how this develops as Big Nog was always the cornerstone of BTT and his brother remains with them.

In MMA freak show news, HIV positive former professional boxer Tommy Morrison made his MMA debut (sort of). Though blood tests showing Morrison free of HIV have only come via mail through his managers, Tommy was cleared to fight John Stover in a fight. Then, the rules were changed to a kickboxing affair, and then at the last minute to a boxing match with MMA gloves. Morrison won via decisive TKO in the 1st round though his blood wasn't spilled though much of John's was. How Morrison is getting past these fraudulent blood tests is beyond me, but his quest to fight Chuck Liddell (who in his famous NyQuil fueled interview mentioned wanting to fight Tommy) just plain won't happen. Speaking of three ring circus bogus MMA affairs......

"Merciles" Ray Mercer is still scheduled to fight street fighter Kimbo Slice on June 23rd on the CFFC 5 card. Kimbo a body guard for a porn site group who got some fame from Internet underground fighting, is to take on the 46 year old pro boxer who was bested with but one kick in his 1st MMA fight with Remy Bonjasky. This is yet another sad MMA joke that only sets the sport back from legitimacy.

The Oxygen network is debuting their new women's kickboxing show this week but the only reason to watch is host Gina Carano. Other than that who cares?

It is finally time to watch Bodog Fight as they are now showing footage from their 2nd PPV that had Fedor vs Matt Lindland as well as Amar Suloev, Nick Thompson, and Eddie Alvarez. Also, they may have such MMA stars as Gilbert Melendez, Yves Edwards, Jake Shields, Josh Barnett, Aleksander Emelianko, and many more surprise guests. Bodog Fight Season 4 is shaping up to be a real event!

Don't sleep on the WEC shown on VS network. They are really pushing the show along with the Tapout crew's reality show giving MMA even more exposure. Though minor league, you can find some great fights at lighter weights and quite frankly it is better than anything the IFL has offered in a while.

In just shake your head and cry news, it looks like the IFL is setting up a rematch between Ken Shamrock and Don Frye to continue their geriatric main events. Jesus, guys just don't know when to step away. The IFL continues to suck though they have some decent fighters in Jay Hieron, Chris Horodecki, Alex Shoenauer, Eric Owings, Matt Horwitch, and Rory Markham.

BEST UFC Fight Night Eva! 6/12/07

I lazed around and didn't get my picks in or help promote the latest UFC Fight Night and what happens, it is the best the UFC has had in its short union with Spike TV. Some may say it had a weak roster, but the fights did not disappoint with dramatic/quick finishes and a main event that was simply awe inspiring. On to the important stuff.

Spencer Fisher defeated Sam Stout by unanimous decision in their rematch. Both men came out slugging early, but it was Fisher that seemed to be landing precisely and with more power. Stout cannot be denied his iron chin as he took a hell of a beating in the 1st round and didn't have a mark on him. In the 2nd it was more of the same with Fisher mixing it up with leg kicks, body kicks, overhand rights, straight lefts, knee's, and whatever else he pulled out of his bag of tricks. Not that Sammy was just taking it, he was landing shots as well in a bout reminiscent of Griffin/Bonnar 1. I mean these guys just threw at each other and did not stop though the pace was blistering. In the final round, it was more of the same with Spence dominating though you wouldn't know it by his bloody battered face. Stout began to slow and at the minute mark, the fans gave a standing ovation for the effort put out by the warring fighters. It was a great fight, but no doubt about it as Fisher won 30-27 on each judges score card avenging his earlier loss to Stout. Fisher said a 3rd bout must happen and was very humble saying that Stout was the toughest man he has ever fought and that the bout was a draw in his eyes (though he clearly won it). Spencer has gone 11-2 in his last 13 fights and losing to #1 contender Hermes Franca, is the only thing keeping him from a title shot. I believe he has established himself as the #2 contender and is in a position to challenge the winner of Sherk/Franca.

Mr. Secret Jon (why don't people know who this uber-talented Welterweight is?) Fitch survived early trouble with Roan Carneiro of Brazilian Top Team. Roan took the touted wrestler to the mat twice in the 1st round and almost sunk in the feared anaconda choke, though Fitch somehow escaped, but still lost the round. Then in the 2nd, Fitch found his range locating some great combination strikes and hurting Carneiro. Roan pulled guard to protect himself but only received more punches as Jon began to dominate. A seemingly already beaten Roan left his neck open as Fitch easily sunk in the tight rear naked choke for the submission win. I don't know how long I have to talk about this guy before he comes out from under the radar, but this guy has a date with a Welterweight title shot. My guess, is that he will fight Diego Sanchez or possibly Karo Parisyan, two more Welts right there in the mix. I would just like to take a moment to thank the UFC for letting Jon get on TV in only his 6th amazing fight with the company.

Take note of Thiago Tavares, as he out worked the much feared Miletich fighter Jason Black who made his octagon debut. Though 155 seems to be too much of a weight cut for Black (who looked far to skinny and easily winded) you cannot deny the amazing speed along with knowledge Thiago used to submit Jason. Thiago came out with fists of fire ala a young Vitor Belfort but when the fight went to the mat, he out ju-jitsu'd the heralded wrestler Black in stunning fashion. Tavares was simply smooth as he moved from position to position and just man handled Black. Sporting a big black eye for the 2nd round, Black took the fight to the ground but it was Tavares who was on point slapping in a triangle choke that you could immediately tell was too tight to escape from. Thiago got the upset win and was so impressive you have to want to see this guy again as he simply walked through a very experienced and talented veteran.

Drew McFedries rebounded from a submission loss to Martin Kampmann to viciously KO Jordan Radev. Drew came out and immediately scored and scored again with strong punches. Jordan didn't have a chance as Drew got the KO in only 33 seconds! Impressive to say the least, but Drew, even if you are excited from a big win, do not shove a referee, who is only trying to protect a fallen fighter! That is unacceptable, but I look forward to your next exciting bout.

Welcome newcomer Anthony Johnson (3-0 prior to the bout) to the UFC. This kid (23) took the fight on a week's notice and knocked the shit out of a talented fighter known as Chad Reiner. This one only took 13 seconds as Anthony just brutalized Chad in suck a quick fashion that the replay was the entire fight twice! Who knows how good this muay thai fighter actually is, but damn that was an impressive win.

Nate Mohr won a decision (yawn), Glesion Tibau continues with his 3rd win in a row, "The Barn Cat" Tamden McCrory beat the zero ground game having Pete Spratt by you guessed it, submission, while Forrest Petz got a win in the inconsistant fighter catagory with fellow inconsistent Luigi Fioravanti to round out the nights affairs.

Weak card or not, the fights tonight were great and if you missed it you must watch the replay! Isn't it funny the UFC can put an event together with a weak lineup and get amazing results? Speaking of which, this weekend is UFC 72 Victory with nothing that deserves a PPV fee. Holy shit that's a weak card but look for Guida/Griffin (Tyson not Forrest) to steal the show. We will have picks for that event and hopefully news very soon on potential signings of Wanderlei Silva and Fedor Emelianko to the UFC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Busy Weekend On The MMA Roundup

Well 1st things 1st, we have to talk about K-1's "Dynamite" show here in good ole 'Merica. The main event was already spoiled with Hong-Man Choi unable to pass his medical test and had to pull out of the show. The hype around former Pro Wrestler Brock Lesnar was not spoiled by the replacement, Min Soo Kim (2-5), the punching bag with eye balls. Brock came out and took Kim down with his NCAA wrestling championship style, and proceeded to pummel the poor man for 58 seconds before Min tapped out. We learned nothing from this fight, but you cannot deny the potential for Lesnar in the heavyweight division. The tools are all there, and let the bidding begin for his future services.

The co-main event of the rematch of one of the greatest fights of all time, Royce Gracie vs Sakuraba, could not, and did not live up to the hype. Sure both fighters are past their prime, but neither man did anything to really win the fight. Its not even really their fault, both men just seemed to cancel each other out, though there were a few good ground struggles. In the end, with the crowd reigning down the boo's, the judges saw the decision for Royce. I saw it a draw, but in the end the fight didn't really matter. Sak needs to retire, and Royce should consider it as well. Still, idiots booing two of the greatest fighters of all time is inexcusable no matter how the match plays out!

Former Pro Football player Jonnie Morton made his MMA debut, and was carried out of the ring via a stretcher in only 38 seconds. Morton was dropped by Bernard Ackah with a single punch that seems to have obliterated Morton's MMA dreams. Also in a smart move, Morton refused to take his post fight drug test and was denied his fight purse.

Jake Shields won yet again and most people still have no clue who the uber-talented Welterweight is. That needs to change and perhaps another stint with Bodog and a future bout with Elite XC will help his lack of notoriety. Don Sik Yoon got his 1st career win in the "Fight Of The Night" with Melvin Manhoef. Melvin the vaunted Dutch striker came out like a man on fire with a barrage of strikes Yoon somehow survived. In the 2nd, Yoon pulled one of the best armbar's I've seen in a while to get the win. Though a record of (1-4), Yoon does have some real talent and we'll see where he goes from this big win.

Moving away from K-1's Dynamite show, the deal is finally, and officially done with UFC buying Pride FC. Yes we all thought the deal was done a while back, but it wasn't. Also, it seems as if the Pride FC name and company may just be folded up and absorbed by the UFC. If that's the case it is sad, but Pride fighters like Paulo Filho, Shogun Rua, Antonio Nogueira, have all signed and the Japan roster seems to be thinning rapidly. By the by, how the hell do you sign Filho, one of the best Middleweights in the world, to a contract in the minor league WEC? That makes no sense. Also, the future Lightweight Tournament and all scheduled Pride PPV's have been canceled. There are so many great Pride fighters that need a home and there just simply isn't enough room in the UFC for all. We shall wait and see.

After Chuck Liddell's recent KO loss to new Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson, Dana White stated that it was time, and Chuck's next bout would finally be the dream match with Wanderlei Silva. However, Silva is a free agent, and has already stated he wanted to take the entire year off to rest, heal, and train, to return fresh in 2008. Of course money changes everything, but the original plan before Chuck's loss, was to have Liddell fight Mirko Cro Cop (also coming off a KO loss) in an end of the year mega-fight. These are two very big options and either one could be amazing.

Uriah Faber won yet again as the 145lb. Champion of WEC (among other titles) this past weekend, but he is the only 145 fighter anyone knows besides Kid Yamamoto who refuses to fight in America. Rumors are flying that former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver, is planning to drop down to 145 after his fight with BJ Penn, and join the WEC. This could pose a great fight with Faber, but then what? I hope Jens stays in the UFC and tries to win the crown again.

Finally, the 1st (now former) Middleweight Champion Evan Tanner, is coming back to fight in September. An opponent has not been named but it will be great to see the talented veteran who has been training with Chute Boxe's American gym return to action.

Oh, and for all the Tito Ortiz fans, his "girlfriend" pornstar Jenna Jameson has a new movie coming out, where someone other than Tito will be cumming on her.
