MMA Melee 12/22/08

Mirko Cro Cop has accepted a MMA rules fight with Hong-Man Choi at k-1 Dynamite. The "Techno Goliath" had these choice words for the Croatian. "Mirko Cro Cop has had some spectacular finishes but he has been pretty boring in his last few fights. I’m not afraid of him, I know he’s a very smart fighter but I intend to take him down and quickly finish the fight." Alistair Overeem is also after Flipovic and will competing at the same event versus Sergei Kharitonov. The "Demolition Man" recently spoke about the cancelled rematch with Cro Cop saying, "This really pissed me off because now my fight was cancelled because this douche-bag didn’t want to fight me while he was saying nobody wants to fight him. That’s crap, and that’s why I grabbed the microphone, and I’ll keep doing so until I get this fight. I will get him." To add to the carousel, K-1 "bad boy" Badi Hari (who was DQ'd in the finals of this years k-1 World Grand Prix) called out Overeem and said, "MMA is for pussies and huggers and K-1 is the real sport." In all this mess Kharitonov is the silent Russian who actually has a KO win over Alistair in October of '07 and should do it again. All the named parties will be in attendance and not doubt talking shit.
MMA fighter Justin Levens (28), and his wife, Sara McLean-Levens (25) were found shot to death in their California home. The Orange County Register details that both were scheduled to appear in court where they faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon on the day the shootings occurred. An earlier report filed by Josh Hart noted that according to a report from NBC Sports, police will continue ballistics, residue and toxicological testing, which will help them definitively make a ruling on the crime. They are looking at the tragic scenario of murder-suicide.
Former WWE wrestler Bobbly Lashley won his MMA pro debut at MFA by TKO (cut) in a mere 41 seconds. The Heavyweight continues to train with American Top Team. Future opponents possibly include Kimbo Slice and Roy Nelson at an as yet named promotion. The wrestling company TNA is reportedly also trying to lure Lashley back into the scripted world of "Professional Wrestling."
The winner of the upcoming GilbertYvel and Josh Barnett fight will face the winner of Fedor Emelianenko/AndreiArlovski (bouts at Affliction's 2nd show "Day Of Reckoning" in January) for the WAMMA title. How Yvel deserves a title shot if the stars collide and he upsets Barnett is beyond me. The Dutch fighter has bitten an opponent, repeatedly poked an adversary's eyes, and once even assaulted a referee, yet California managed to give him a license to fight anyway.
Satoshi Ishii, a 21 year old Beijing Super Heavyweight Judo Gold Medalist is a hot commodity today with DREAM and the UFC trying to sign the fighter who is training with the aforementioned American Top Team. He has said he wants to fight in the UFC but a recent reported offer of $5 million from DREAM may just sway his decision.
Diego Sanchez is reportedly moving to Lightweight (which he said he would never do) to face fellow TUF winner Joe Stevenson. This could be a real kick ass fight and if the "Nightmare's" body adjusts well to the weight cut, he will be devastating at his new home.
A little humor as Ken Shamrock will attempt to fight in the main event of "Valentines Eve Massacre" on Feb. 13, 2009 at the Selland Arena in Fresno, California. Ken will be joined by his son Ryan Shamrock on the card, which is being promoted by Ken Shamrock Productions and War Gods. He just won't give up and has actually been forced to create fight cards so he can be a part of them. Sad indeed.
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture has signed on for a major role in Sylvester Stallone's next action project, titled The Expendables. Couture joins a cast including action stars Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker. The $60 million feature centers on a group of mercenaries sent to overthrow against a ruthless dictator. Could be interesting.
