UFC 84 iLL WiLL Results: Upset Central

How ya like the "Prodigy" now Sean Sherk. Sean bitched and moaned that he never lost his title but I think cheating via steroids to defend it means ya lost it. Still, BJ Penn called him out and the war of words ended Saturday night. Sherk inexplicably didn't go for his constant shoots on BJ instead saying he thought he was doing well on the feet. His face told a different story. BJ used his length advantage to jab away at Sherk tagging him at will with better boxing skills and speed. Sherk just couldn't reach BJ and when they locked up Penn tossed him away like it was nothing. He looked tired at the end of the 2nd round which worried me but then as the 3rd began Penn seemed fine and would even turn it up a notch. More of the same peppering strikes and a flying knee to Sherk floored the former champ as BJ dropped on him with a barrage of strikes just as the round ended. BJ stood up confident and said it was over though Sherk was saved by the bell. However, as Penn walked away confidently, Sean couldn't seem to get to his feet and referee Mario Yamasaki ended the punishment. Dominance by Penn who will defend his title next against the winner of Roger Huerta and Kenny Florian.

Wanderlei Silva has brought back the "Axe Murderer!" Wand came out striking as did Keith Jardine but it was the warrior of old who just unloaded the vicious assault we had seen so many times in Japan. A punch to the ear rocked Jardine and a left to the jaw on the way down didn't help. Silva pounced on the fallen opponent and just pounded him until Keith's body went stiff as a board and the ref stopped the fight, perhaps a little late. The celebration was short lived as the classy Silva instantly knew there was concern for Jardine's health. Everyone checked on the fallen fighter who seemed frozen in that stiff position for some very long minutes. Keith would eventually be OK and walk out of the cage under his own power though still very shaken. Wand shed a few man tears as he got that much needed win he had been working so hard for, and in spectacular fashion. 36 seconds and Wanderlei Silva is back baby!

Thiago Silva was also impressive though he was dropped by a head kick by Antonio Mendes in the opening minutes. Mendes followed up the attack but Thiago gained his composure and took the fight to the clinch on the feet while he recovered. A failed judo throw by Antonio leg Silva to the top position and then to full mount where he just unloaded in anger and Mendes tapped from strikes. Thiago Silva reminds me of a young Renato "Babalu" Sobral and has to be in the Light Heavyweight Title hunt. Don't sleep on Mendes, this talented Brazilian will return as he is a good fighter we need to see more of.

Goodbye Tito Ortiz and good riddance. I doubt he wanted to go out on his back, bloodied, hurt, and dominated in a 30-27 decision loss. Lyoto Machida used his unorthodox karate style to pick and choose his spots frustrating Ortiz in every round and landing all the strikes will stuffing the slow takedown attempts. Tito knew he was losing going into the final round and tried to bring the fight to Machida but instead ate a flying knee to the body which floored the veteran fighter. Machida followed with strikes but almost got caught in a triangle he beautifully countered. Lyoto is established as a major player and Tito leaves the UFC on a one sided loss. Beautiful!

Gordon Reljic, oh did I forget to mention he trains with Mirko Cro Cop, defeated Wilson "Overly Hyped" Gouveia in a war. Reljic attacked early and had Wilson on his heels with head kicks and power striking. Gouveia started to put the punches together in the 2nd stanza when Gordon landed the left temple punch dropping the "Title Contender" (which I never saw) and won the fight in his UFC debut.

Nakamura was out of shape and out matched as Sokoudjou battered him at the end of the 1st round. Nakamura fell off his stool dizzy and with his leg injured and the fight was called. Soko moves on and with his 3rd straight loss we may not see Nakamura in the UFC again. Even so, we'll see the popular and hilarious fighter again I am sure. Good luck and get well Kazuhiro.

Rousimar Palhares slickly armbarred Ivan Salvarry while Shane Carwin KO'd Christian Wellisch into the 3rd row. Dong Hyun Kim took out Jason "Ears" Tan via elbows and judo expertise while Yoshiyuki Yoshida sealed a pretty anaconda choke on the inexperienced "War Machine" for a submission win. Rich Clementi had some trouble with Terry Etims size advantage but pulled through for a decision win.

So folks, Palhares, Carwin, Kim, Reljic, and one could even say Wanderlei Silva pulled upsets on this exciting card. That is 5, yes count em, 5 upsets picked correctly for a PPV. When is the last time you saw that happen hmmm? Thats a whopping 9-2 on our picks uh thank you.

UFC 84 iLL WiLL Weigh In Pictures & Notes

Weigh-Ins are generally pretty boring but UFC 84 iLL WiLL had some interesting moments. Nakamura (how can you not just love this guy) came out in full Oriental garb including a sweet basket hat which he wore during the stare down. Tito Ortiz came out with a special message to Dana White hidden under his 1st shirt. He pulled off his top layer to reveal "Dana Is My Bitch" in large lettering on his T-Shirt and stood proudly for all the cameras and crowd to see. Dana was mysteriously absent for this days weigh-ins. Finally, it was great to hear the crowd chant "Asshole, asshole." over and over again as the steroid cheater Sean Sherk weighed in and then tried to do his interview. Classic.

UFC 84 iLL WiLL

Main Card Bouts:
Lightweight Champion B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk We this is going to be a ground war and that is all we know for sure. BJ has that flexibility that atones for being in the worse position on bottom as well as being able to make his elbows count. Kenny Florian cut up Sherk as well and still took a 5 round beating. Which brings up the cardio thing. I think BJ is finally taking his career seriously as far as training goes and hell, I want him to beat Sherk, but, when it comes to going 5 rounds which man would you choose? Sean is a physical machine with or without the steroids. He takes you down and stays just busy enough to hold you there and win the round. I'd be surprised if BJ can get out of or be effective (points) enough to win the war.
WINNER-Sean Sherk by decision

Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz I see's me a Tito Shamrocking someone bout ahead. Machida is fluid, quick, and accurate, but can rarely finish anyone. Now he falls into Tito specialty. He is the consummate slow down fighter waiting to win on points or annoyance. Its the battle of the guys that lull you to sleep but I think once to the floor (and it will go there) Tito takes advantage. When is the last time you saw Tito on his back besides after being KO'd by Liddell that is or being spanked by Couture? He dictates the pace and wins a snore fest.
WINNER-Tito Ortiz by decision

Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva Silva loses 4 straight and he's gone from the UFC folks. Dana's words not mine. Both guys bring unorthodox striking to the table while Jardine has some of the best leg kicks in the game and Silva is the warrior of warriors. You can flip your own coin but God telling me the result wouldn't stop me from picking the return of the "Axe Murderer."
WINNER-Wanderlei Silva by TKO Rd. 2

Thiago Silva vs. Antonio Mendes For those who don't know or go on appearances alone, Mendes is one bad ass dude. Those who don't know, this will probably be the best fight on the card. These two throw to kill and is coming in off 12 straight wins while Silva has not even sniffed defeat in his 12 total fights. My prediction for "Fight Of The Night" and a win for Chute Boxe.
WINNER-Thiago Silva by badass camp

Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic Goran comes from Gracie Barra is 7-0, and has fought at Heavyweight. Gouveia defeated Jason Lambert derailing his Title hopes but I've never really been impressed by the guy. Lackadaisical style and sometimes out of shape. "Upset Pick #1" for the Croation with Gracie training. (Upset Pick #2)
WINNER-Reljic by sub Rd.2

Preliminary Bouts:
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura Soko fell from grace as fast as he rose when Lyoto Machida made a bitch out of the much feared Team Quest striker. Nakamura is one of the toughest and best guys sent from Japan but he is out sized and outmatched here. Soko goes for a quick win and Naks only chance is to weather the storm and come on later. I don't think he does and Soko shows a little more than just his stand up skills (judo).
WINNER-Sokodjou by TKO Rd.3

Yoshiyuki Yoshida vs. Jon Koppenhaver Yoshi can throw a punch and Jon can take one (see his fight with J-Rock). So Jon takes the shots and either falls down or loses by decision. I got no love for the sloppy stylings of the TUF alumni. (Upset Pick#3)
WINNER-Yoshida by decision

Rousimar Palhares vs. Ivan Salaverry Ivan does everything well but lacks power and was shook by his quick KO loss to Terry Martin more than a year ago. Rous is a BTT Ju-Jitsu specialist which makes me lean to him but Salaverry is no slouch on the floor. Close call but I'm on an "Upset" tear.
WINNER-Palhares by sub (Upset Pick #4, we're going crazy here people!)

Shane Carwin vs. Christian Wellisch Garwin just because I don't give a shit about Wellisch so welcome new guy. (Technically Upset Pick #5)
WINNER-Carwin

Dong-hyun Kim vs. Jason Tan Only Jordan Breen would know who these guys are.
WINNER-Asian Persuasion

Terry Etim vs. Rich Clementi Etim is a tough Brit but "No Love" gets another win via TKO.
WINNER-Clementi

WVR's Sengoku: Second Battle

So World Victory Road held their 2nd event Sunday and barely anyone in the MMA community (including myself) took note. The card was weak at best though the main event did hold some intrigue with two top tier Heavyweights looking for a dominant chart climbing win. Also, a Gracie on the card usually draws, unless he's a "kinda" Gracie and Kondo is a Japanese icon but still ZZZZZZZZZZZ's permeate the airwaves.

Josh Barnett bested Jeff Monson in a lackluster fight though both men are good Heavyweights a weight class that is lacking in talent these days. It went to a decision which had to shock the world since these two are weak on the feet and nullify each others brilliant ground games. Both guys seemed to chat it up out there instead of making for an intense fight. Josh did show Muay Thai improvement by showing he had Muay Thai moves and via the clinch landed some good knees. Barnett just out pointed the "Snowman" to victory while neither man was ever in any real danger. Monson continues to slide just a bit while Barnett continues to make his case to face Fedor Emelianenko or Randy Couture, either of which would be epic fights.

Roger "Kinda A" Gracie was impressive as he as he dominated veteran Yuki Kondo with a submission win via rear naked choke. He basically just did what he wanted taking Kondo to the floor and passing in and out of his guard at will before taking his back and sinking in the choke. 2-0 for the upstart Gracie and looking good.

Return of the "Monster" as Kevin Randleman got the win a full 2 years since he last fought and failed drug tests, had run ins with the law, and battled life threatening injuries. What a strange trip this cat is on. He gets a "W" over Ryo Kawamura an average fighter much like himself. Finally a victory and nobody even cares. How sad for "Dead Man's Urine."

Jorge Santiago defeated Yuki Sasaki by armbar and continues with his 5th win in a row including his winning the Strikeforce Middleweight Tournament which should give him a future title shot against Cung Le.

Mike "Quicksand" Pyle got an impressive win over a very good Dan "The Handler" Hornbuckle by triangle choke. Sky's the limit for this young Xtreme Couture trained fighter and we expect good things from him in the future.

There were 3 other fights that we just don't have any interest in and a very lame card for WVR's 2nd effort. Hey they are just beginning but more fighters are coming in daily and its nice to have MMA in Japan in 2 organizations though DREAM is more elite at the present than Sengoku.

Monday Morning Reverie: Head Scratching

May 12, 2008
by Mike Sloan (msloan@sherdog.com)

Is there anybody in the room willing to stand up and explain to me why Nick Diaz (Pictures) isn't one of the most marketed and popular fighters in the sport of mixed martial arts?

I don't expect him to be at the level of Chuck Liddell (Pictures) or Randy Couture (Pictures). But aside from the MMA diehards, the native of Stockton, Calif., seems to toil in relative obscurity. That baffles my mind beyond explanation.

For starters, the Cesar Gracie (Pictures)-trained fighter has some of the sport's slickest jiu-jitsu. His boxing arsenal also ranks among the top of the heap, and though his striking isn't on par with Anderson Silva's, his technique bests at least 95 percent of MMA's combatants.

And most importantly, which is quite bizarre, he's been a participant of some of the greatest, most exciting fights the sport has ever seen, particularly in the UFC. Whether he won, lost or got robbed of a decision, it wasn't rare for him to nab UFC fight of the night honors.

Yet Diaz jumps around from organization to organization these days with little more than a cult following. He's similar to the great Erik Morales of boxing fame in that his immense talent coalesces with his hunger to do whatever it takes to win, save for the fact that "El Terrible" was an absolute superstar in his sport. Diaz is far from one in MMA.

I haven't been able to put my finger on why Diaz is shunned by the bulk of MMA fans in America. Granted, he hasn't fought in the UFC since November 2006, and his last fights in the Octagon weren't promoted to the extent of main card bouts, but there has to be some sort of lingering reason why Diaz isn't marketed as much as many of his peers.

Is it because of his reported marijuana use and failed urinalysis after his unbelievable gogoplata submission of Takanori Gomi (Pictures)? Is it because his UFC record is right at .500 and his professional ledger isn't as glamorous as that of some other fighters? Is it because he wasn't a cast member on any seasons of Zuffa's reality TV game show? Is it because, save for when he feels he got robbed in a fight, he isn't an overly vocal personality outside the cage?

He is arguably the most exciting fighter in the sport, yet he commands but moderate fanfare. He toppled a solid Japanese contender in Katsuya Inoue (Pictures) in dominating fashion on the Dream card this past weekend, but almost nobody in the United States saw it.

Maybe after his next fight he'll begin to really start pulling in some attention. Because regardless of whether he faces Hayato Sakurai (Pictures), Shinya Aoki (Pictures) or some alcohol-laden hobo behind Arby's, it'll be the best fight on the card.

DREAM 3 Results = Pick Domination!

DREAM 3 Results
So in the 11th hour, Nick Diaz was flown from California to Japan to fight Katsuya Inoue. Kat had fought at Middleweight and Nick has fought at Lightweight so it seemed a mismatch on paper. It was but not as I had thought. Diaz looked bigger and had a lot of reach and height on the normally tall Japanese people. Nick came to fight as he always does, but looked like the "Diablo" of old toying with his opponent, hands in the air, while striking with accuracy, repetition, and just brutal thudding body shots that were brilliant. It looked like his old bout with Robbie Lawler in which he TKO'd the heavily favored Miletich fighter and became a UFC fan favorite. Nick took some shots but gave far more just beating the crap outta Inoue. Staggered, bloody, and flailing, Inoue's corner threw in the towel as Diaz gave his most impressive performance in a while and will now supposedly face Mach Sakurai for the DREAM Welterweight Title after he fights next in Elite XC. Nick wanted to get busy with fighting and he will now have his chance.

Lightweight Tournament Bouts
Eddie Alvarez culled my upset pick by surprising Joachim Hansen with his power and muscling his way to a decision win. Eddie just controlled the bout and even dropped the normally hard chinned Norwegian at one point. Eddie moves on in the tourney taking out one of the favorites and puts himself into the Top 10 of all Lightweights!

Caol Uno had upset on his mind as well as he choked out Mitsuhiro Ishida in the 2nd round of their spirited contest. Guess its too soon to pass the torch as Ishida shows a very uncharacteristic performance and Uno takes the next step.

Tatsuya Kawajiri defeated Luiz Firmino by decision (what a shock, another decision) and immediately challenged Caol Uno for the next round seeking revenge for his fallen T-Blood teammate Ishida. I imagine DREAM will accommodate the request.

Daisuke Nakamura KO'd Bu Kyung Jung while Takeshi Yamazaki bested Shoji Maruyama to round out the tournament for the evening. Still no word on if Aoki will be making the next round with his current injuries.

Meanwhile Jason "Mayhem" Miller brought his "A" game to Japan beating the shit out of Katsuyori Shibata in a one sided but entertaining bout. Mayhem has long been a crowd favorite and really looked impressive here after a 5 month layoff. Now Jason becomes an alternate for the Middleweight Grand Prix should someone not be able to continue.

Finally "Manho" Melvin Manhoef struggled with Dae Won Kim before finally getting the TKO with ground and pound. My only issue here is that is looked to me like Manho landed a hard knee to the back of the head of Kim, while he was on the ground, which led to the victory. I could see the DREAM commission overturning this later similar to what happened with Kazuo Misaki illegally kicking Yoshihiro Akiyama in the head while down and having his win turned into a NC (no contest) later. But, give Melvin a break, he fought and lost by way of knockout to Remy Bonjasky on April 26 in Amsterdam. He went on to reveal the he got "injured in my last fight against Remy Bonjasky. Because I received a lot of kicks and punches in the ribs, I had to have surgery to take out blood from behind the lung and I was hospitalized for seven days. So, I couldn't fight as aggressively as I wanted, I needed to be patient.” Dude's a warrior.

Nice event with some good fights and the Americans represent while we await DREAM 4 in July. 6 & 1 on the picks bitches. Wish I could've picked the Takeshi Yamazaki fight but they wouldn't finalize the damn card in time. Upcoming news on the UFC putting the Heavyweight Title to bed and MMA on the mainstream. Bet.

DREAM 3 Picks For An Incomplete Card

DREAM 3: MAY 11, 2008
Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan

Lightweight Grand Prix Second Round (16-man tournament):
Tatsuya Kawajiri 21-4-2 vs. Luiz "Buscape" Firmino 12-3 Coming off 2 straight wins the "Crusher" seems to be back on his MMA track. The "T-Blood" member needs to stop an opponent but probably won't against the ATT prospect. The 2 fought before to a close decision Tatsu won. A close bout but the power wrestler in Kawajiri should nullify Luiz's Ju-Jitsu yet again.
WINNER-Kawajiri by another decision

Mitsuhiro "Endless Fighter" Ishida 16-3-1 vs. Caol Uno 24-10-4 "Endless Fighter," when the hell did that become his nickname, and is it because he always fights to a decision (12 of his 16 wins!)? At any who, this is a sort of passing of the torch as Uno a former elite Japanese Lightweight Hero has faded, and Ishida is stepping up into the role. I'm not calling Uno "done" quite yet, the guy is still a submission specialist, but at a tender young 33 he is actually past his prime with 38 pro fights taking their toll. No way we don't see a decision between these 2 15 minute fighters but should be entertaining none the less.
WINNER-Mitsu Ishida

Joachim "Hellboy" Hansen 17-6-1 vs. Eddie Alvarez 13-1 The best matchup in the 2nd round of the tourney features two furious strikers who love to go to war! Short stack Alvarez lacks the reach and all but out powers Hansen if he can avoid the knee attack. This is going to be a great fight but I wonder why the Japanese fighters got such easier draws? This 50/50 fight could go either way but I'm leaning toward the Fight Factory cult hero and his non-stop assault. Not because he is an American, I like Hellboy better, but Eddie has only been bested once.
WINNER-Eddie Alvarez by TKO

Shinya Aoki 15-2 vs Katsuhiko Nagata 4-2 This bout is postponed to May 11th as the Japanese run company continues to tilt the boards in favor of the most popular Japanese fighter in the tournament. For "unnamed injuries" Aoki is unable at this point to fight after his "rematch" with Gesias "JZ" Calvancante which he should have lost because the strikes were legal but I've bitched about this over and over so anyway.

Jason "Mayhem" Miller 20-5 vs. Katsuyori Shibata 2-3 Uh, really? I mean, I know Mayhem is popular and all, but you didn't have to feed him a "Tomato Can" of this lower level. The guy is a "Pro Wrestler" for shits sake and has lost 3 fights in a row. Jason has had 5 months off so I guess this is a tune up. He toys with Shiba and wins easily.
WINNER-Mayhem however he wants

Melvin Manhoef 20-4-1 vs Dae Won Kim 4-3 Judo (Kim) versus pure brutal power. Manho is going to destroy this poor fella, cardio or no.
WINNER-Melvin and it won't take long

Daisuke Nakamura 13-9 vs. Bu Kyung Jung 0-2 Yet another Nakamura which is like having the name Smith in America, is a submission fighter and little else. B,....I don't know who these guys are. I'm just reading their bio's and guessing but then I realized I don't care.
WINNER-Nakamura

Nick "Diablo" Diaz 16-7 vs. Katsuya Inoue Diaz is fighting,...wait it just got cancelled. Oh wait, the fight is back on again. Nope, they pulled him out-hold on hold on, the fight is happening? Could they decide if this fight is going to happen or not? Its been cancelled and re-added at least 3 times now. Give it a name. Ah well if they do fight WAR DIAZ!

Takeshi Yamazaki 13-7-2 vs. TBA Yamazaki trains with the "Grabaka Hitman" Kazuo Misaki and is best at submissions. TBA is not to be overlooked here. TBA has had some incredible wins in its day and trains very hard in all disciplines. Expect TBA to bring the pain and never submit.
WINNER-TBA in an upset

If the DREAM people want to be taken seriously in the MMA world they are going to have to quit stacking their cards in favor of their hometown heroes. Its just obvious and doesn't give the best matchups for a Grand Prix. And lets try to get a card finalized so the fighters know who they are going to face at least a day before the fucking event. Its all about planning people. *Side bar, I just think its funny shits is in the spell checker
