UFC On Fuel TV 3: The Korean Zombie vs Dustin Poirier Picks & Prognostications For A Lengthy Titled MMA Event

UFC on Fuel TV 3: Korean Zombie vs. Poirier
May 15, 2012
Patriot Center
Fairfax, Virginia
Main Card (Fuel TV):
Chan Sung Jung (12-3) vs. Dustin Poirier (12-1)  Two top Featherweights on the cusp of losing to Champion Jose Aldo battle it out for the #1 contendership.  "Diamond," the star of the highly touted MMA documentary "Fightville" rides in with a 5 fight winning streak, is well rounded, well poised, and just ready to take that 'next level' step in his career.  The beloved "Korean Zombie" is an exciting fighter known to make some glaring mistakes and may have gotten a bit lucky besting Mark Hominick in a mere 7 seconds last out.  Jung is well rounded as well but hardly as durable as the hard charging guns blazing Poirier who will not let up on his attack.  Chan hangs early and maybe tries to get flashy but after he is stunned early he'll settle back down as Dustin takes control of the bout in a route to the judges nod.
WINNER-Dustin Poirier by Decision
Amir Sadollah (5-3) vs. Jorge Lopez (11-2) The oft injured but affable Amir returns against the Wand Fight Team member who is a weight class above where he should be fighting.  Jorge has a shot here for sure but Sadollah is solid in takedown offense to halt the Lopez grappling attempts while using his superior kickboxing and work ethic to win a spirited affair on points.
WINNER-Amir Sadollah by Decision
Donald Cerrone (17-4) vs. Jeremy Stephens (20-7)  The "Cowboy" returns from an exciting though thorough defeat at the hands of Nate Diaz looking to reclaim elite status in the Lightweight division.  The "Heathen" is a tough enough dude but quite frankly lacks the skills in every area in MMA to contend with the top level talent.  Cerrone is top level talent.  A good reach advantage coupled with superior striking and far superior mastery of grappling leaves too many ways for the "Cowboy" to eliminate Jeremy.  We may hit 15 minutes because of the sturdy chin and strength of Stephens but he's going to get beat to a pulp en route provided he can stay off the mat where a tapout is likely.
WINNER-Donald Cerrone by Decision

Yves Jabouin (17-7) vs. Jeff Hougland (10-4) My 2nd favorite fighter named Yves will use his varied striking attack against the submission game of Jeffy.  Flip a coin but I like the striker which goes against my normal feelings in a puncher vs a grappler.
WINNER-Yves Jabouin by Rd.3 TKO

Igor Pokrajac (24-8) vs. Fabio Maldonado (18-4) Igor surprised me when he blasted away Kryzstof Soszynski in 35 seconds last time but to be honest, normally disappoints with bad game planning and the ability to fade in his bouts.  Fabio has struggled staying healthy but his hands are unmistakably beautiful after being a pro boxer.  The body shots especially honor his old work and when he gets Pokrajac to slug with him he's going to pull away.
WINNER-Fabio Maldonado by Decision

Jason MacDonald (25-15) vs. Tom Lawlor (7-4) I thought the "Athlete" had retired but he's back again as both men are in 'must win' situations.  Lawlor has all the keys to win as Jason has notoriously struggled against heavy handed wrestlers.  A submission prayer from the bottom is a possibility for the strong willed Macman but a hail mary none the less.  Bet the percentages but root for the good guy.
WINNER-Tom Lawler by Rd.3 TKO
Prelims (Facebook):
Brad Tavares (7-1)vs. Dongi Yang (10-2)  Well here's a couple of 'also rans' but Tavares is the better striker while Yang likes to do the wrong thing.
WINNER-Brad Tavares by Decision

Codie McKenzie (12-2) vs. Marcus LeVesseur (21-5)  The goofy master of the guillotine is back having proven himself to be a handful if not a great fighter.  Marcus gets the late replacement call and I know very little about him so lets go Cody.
Upset Pick WINNER-Cody McKenzie by Rd.2 Submission

TJ Grant (17-5) vs. Carlo Prater (30-10)  Winning for getting blitzed in the back of the head does you no favors especially against a submission grappler who is your better.  Time to go to school son.
WINNER-TJ Grant by Rd.3 Submission

Rafael Dos Anjos (15-6) vs. Kamal Shalorus (7-2) Kamal is going back to his roots and that means a wrestling clinic on the so-so Dos Anjos.  This might be one to skip for you ultimate boxing fans.
Upset Pick WINNER-Kamal Shalorus by Decision

Jeff Curran (33-14) vs. Johnny Eduardo (25-9)  Gotta tell you I think "Big Frog" is done in the sport but he is a good trainer.  So he's got that going for him.
Upset Pick WINNER-Johnny Eduardo by Decision

Alex Soto (6-1) vs. Francisco Rivera (7-2) Nice of Rivera to fill in here on 2 weeks notice but one of these kids doesn't belong in the UFC while the other is looking to rebound from a tough loss to new contender Mike McDonald.
Upset Pick WINNER-Alex Soto by Decision
MMAFO's been in a recent picking slump but 4 Upset specials is going to put us back on the right track.  I hope.  It's a decent card for free people check it out!
