UFC 117 Results: 3 Upsets & A Middleweight Title Comeback! (Updated)

Dennis Hallman Upsets Ben Saunders by Unanimous Decision. Apparently "Killa-B" learned nothing from his route at the hands of Jon Fitch as "Superman" used the exact same gameplan to L&P his way to victory. Hey, if you don't like it stop it so I'm not hating on Hallman who may now face Matt Hughes whom he holds 2 victories over and 0 defeats. Ben's got some work to do with takedown defense and learning to wall walk for starters.

Stefan Struve KO'd Christian Morecraft after taking a straight beatin' in the 1st round. The loveable young "Skyscraper" got beat up and down for 1st 5 minutes of play and with a swollen lip as big as Patrick Ewing's, the kid stormed back throwing a 3 almost 4 punch combination that dropped the debuting Morecraft and then Struve pinned his arm behind him and punched him out! "KO Of The Night"

Tim Boetsch bored his way to a Unanimous Decision win over Todd Brown. I have nothing good or insightful to say about this bout.

Johny Hendricks upped his undefeated game a notch as he gained the TKO win over Charlie Brenneman. Afro sporting Charles was doing fine out wrestling Hendricks but Johny stayed with the fight and after some nice back and forth exchanges, clipped Brennnemmannn. He fought back to his feet only to be put down again and I gotta tell ya Hendricks is improving rapidly. He has now had his 1st battle with adversity and stayed undefeated. The division would do well to watch out for both of these blokes.

Phil Davis got that expected Unanimous Decision over Rodney Wallace. I fear "Sho-Nuff The Master" may be facing cutbacks soon but Mr. Wonderful continues to shine.

Rick Story Upsets Dustin Hazelett by TKO in the 2nd. I just kinda had this feeling that "McLovin's" chin was going to become an issue with his lack of standing offense and I was actually right for once. I don't like being right in this case.

Junior dos Santos earned the Unanimous Decision win over Roy Nelson in an entertaining all out war. "Cigano" let the bombs go early as he just battered poor fat boy around the Octagon. Showing heart as big as that aforementioned belly, "Big Country" absorbed punishment to the point it was hard to watch. The guy never gave up and banged back as hard as he could before time finally ran out. This was a great bout to watch and 1 of the rare instances where a fighter's stock didn't fall, and in fact rose in a defeat. "Cigano" has a date with the Heavyweight Title sometime early next year. "Fight Of The Night"

Matt Hughes Upsets Ricardo Almeida by Technical Submission via "Modified Anaconda Choke." Matt Hughes owns the Gracie's! So who will be next to represent the family name? Hughes came out looking good early with his movement and caught Ricardo with a good punch that dropped him and proved the move to southpaw stance in his last 2 fights was a mistake. Still Matt learned from those mistakes and when Almeida was down and struggling, Hughes put on a modified choke that I have never seen before. Basically he just latched onto the head and neck of Almeida while pressing him down to the mat and squeezing Ricardo's neck into his own shoulder and arm until the kid passed out! Wow! Impressive stuff from the old man who if you look at the records and recent wins, is actually in title contention!!! Jesus Hughes has just snuck back into the mix. "Submission Of The Night"

Clay Guida defeats Rafael dos Anjos via Submission from most likely a broken jaw. "Super-Clay" came out firing as he always does but it was Rafael who seemed to win the battle on the feet and took the 1st round. Guida was not giving in and attacked with his old takedown and harass style. For the final round it would be more of the new Greg Jackson student bothering Anjos who tapped out of the blue surprising everyone. Turns out, Clay landed a big punch in the 1st round that broke Rafael's jaw and the pressure from Clay's shoulder and top control. You caint stop da "Carpenter" baby. We movin' on!

Jon Fitch earned the Unanimous Decision over Thiago Alves to win the vaunted rematch. Fitch just used his dominant wrestling as always but his striking did look a bit improved as he will now face the winner of GSP/Koscheck. Alves problems with the weight cut continue as he did not look spry as per usual. Perhaps a move to a division where you can act like a professional would be a good idea. There's nothing left for him now at Welterweight anyway. Of course, there really isn't a place for Fitch either if Koscheck wins the GSP rematch because the AKA boys won't fight each other.

Anderson Silva pulled a Triangle Armbar out of his ass in the final moments of the final round to defeat Chael Sonnen. Give the guy credit, Sonnen did almost everything he said he would as he dominated the fight for 20 minutes taking the "Spider" to the mat again and again and beating him mercilessly. The fight is actually 25 minutes and in the end a desperate Silva used those long limbs to wrap up Chael. Sonnen tapped out but the referee wasn't sure and actually asked Chael if he tapped which as we all know is retarded. Silva held the move while an argument quickly developed but cooler heads prevailed as they were separated and the replay showed the obvious tapout. Even after fighting like a stud Sonnen finds a way to come out as the asshole he is while Anderson has to rethink his approach to fighting with his arrogance hopefully in check.

It was a wild night with 3 legitimate Upsets a crazy comeback and going an impressive 9-2 on the picks game.
