Jacob Volkmann defeats the huge mouthed Antonio McKee by Split-Decision ends the 11 fight win streak of "Mandingo." Oh what a shame but hopefully Zuffa wisely cuts Antonio before he can bore us to sleep again. Thank you Mr.X-Mas.
Daniel Roberts taps Greg Soto by Kimura in the very 1st round. The "Ninja" came out a little too strong getting rocked by the very 1st punch and almost got caught in a guillotine, but recovered and Roberts got the advantage in the scramble securing the fight ending submission. "Submission Of The Night"
Diego Nunes Upsets Mike Thomas Brown by Split-Decision in a very close fight.
Brad Tavares TKO's Phil Baroni in the 1st round to put the "NYBA's" record at 13-13 and sending him out of the UFC and hopefully into retirement. Brad took a left hand to the chin and got dropped but slowly recovered to his feet and the "NYBA" controlled the grappling. Then Tavares landed a great combination followed by a high kick that wobbles Baroni. From there he attacks unloading strikes and the referee steps in to end the fight. Congrats to the rough and tough Hilo boy on a great win.
Dustin Poirier Upsets and powned Josh Grispi by Unanimous Decision (30-27). WTF was that? Josh was the biggest favorite on the card, Dustin is a late replacement, and Poirier just destroyed Grispi with knees, elbows, and dominant striking.
Jeremy Stephens KO'd a very game Marcus Davis after almost 3 grueling rounds. Davis didn't look bad at Lightweight but that KO was emphatic. Marcus losing 4 of 5 does not bode well for his career with the UFC. I just don't know that Davis' body can handle the work anymore. "Lil Heathen" starts over with a run at the title. "KO Of The Night"
Clay Guida submits Takanori Gomi with the Guillotine Choke in the 2nd. Guida was a non-stop dancing fool out there with some of the oddest movements I have ever seen. It was straight bizarre but it also confused Gomi who has no idea how to reach his opponent. In the 2nd, Gomi throws a big knee to the body but Clay catches it and scores the takedown. From there he transitions brilliantly between an arm-triangle to the guillotine for the tapout.
Dong Hyun Kim defeats Nate Diaz by Decision (29-28). There is a bit to say about this bout. The "Donger" was oviously larger and stronger controlling Diaz on the ground but doing little damage. The uncharged "Stun Gun" even mocked Diaz from guard daring him to strike before landing a big overhand right of his own. In the final round Nate goes to work punishing Kim against the fence but time is his enemy. Nate lands a big knee but then Kim puts a hand down and Diaz tags him as he falls claiming injury. The replay shows it is very close and Kim's hand may have come off the ground. Either way the entire arena is booing as Kim rolls on the ground and flops with an acting job that would impress David Caruso. When action resumes Diaz does all he can but the "Donger" has stalled him out and will take the decision.
Thiago Silva straight embarrassed Brandon Vera bitch slapping him at 1 point and gruesomely breaking his nose before the Unanimous Decision win (30-27). OMG did Silva make Vera his bitch. After grounding him for the entire 1st round, Thiago stood above Brandon after the bell calling for his opponent to bring the fight. The 2 men go nose to nose but the referee breaks them up and they return to their corners. In the 2nd the "Truth" comes out to bang and its a melee as both men land and flurry. The 2 bangers tire a bit and Silva hits the takedown and Vera is about to get controlled again. For the final round its the takedown and G&P as Thiago crushes Vera's nose with right hooks from Brandon's back. Vera covers up and Thiago begins open hand slapping the "Truth" and mocking him from behind. The bout ends and the crowd reacts to Vera's destroyed nose. He smiles and holds a hat over his face but that should be in shame of his performance not his injury.
* Boy is Thiago Silva becoming the asshole of MMA bring back that old Chute Boxe style from his old training team. Now at ATT he has only gotten meaner and Brandon is destined for Strikeforce or Japan in 2011.
Brian Stann Upsets and TKO's Chris Leben after a brutal round of action. Stann landed a big kick to the body and followed it up with some great combinations and a right hook that almost puts the "Crippler" out. The always tough Leben fights back to his feet only to be dropped again before his last stand an a brutal knee that sprawls out Chris. The referee gives Leben every chance to recover but finally the referee saves him and the "All-American" gets the biggest win of his career.
Frankie Edgar retains his UFC Lightweight Championship over Gray Maynard by a rare Majority Draw. Maynard begins with a huge left hook that drops Freddie. Then its right uppercut that drops him again with Edgar scrambling but getting brutalized. Its total destruction but the "Answer" keeps moving and somehow survives a disastrous round 1 (10-8 Maynard). In the 2nd Edgar is finding his range and his movement looks good again. Landing more and more for Edgar with a huge slam on Gray who gets back to his feet quickly. (10-9 Edgar) In the corner Randy Couture screams at Gray to stop trying to end the fight and return to the gameplan. The 3rd is pretty even until Maynard gets the edge standing a bit and Frankie is again bleeding from the nose. Now Gray lands the takedown though he doesn't do much with it before the round ends. (10-9 Maynard). The "Answer" scores the takedown and locks on a guillotine as the crowd erupts though the "Bully" escapes. Another takedown for Edgar but again Gray escapes though he is looking a bit more tired and slower. Edgar is taking away the fight on the feet now as well and ends the round (10-9 Edgar). I still have the bout 38-37 going into the final round with the "Bully" barely ahead. We begin the end with even striking before Gray lands a big uppercut. Edgar lands some jabs and neither guy is taking over the round. Nobody can get a takedown and they exchange at the very end for a razor close round. (10-10). The official judges score the bout 48-46 Maynard, 48-46 Edgar, & 47-47 for a Majority Draw while MMAFO scores the fight (48-47) for Gray Maynard. The 2nd judge gave every round expect the 1st to Edgar which is arguable but I disagree. The crowd cheers for Gray and Frankie looks distraught. How funny is it that this PPV card was called "Resolution" and we get a draw? Still, "Fight Of The Night"
* I have never seen anyone get beat up that badly as Frankie did and survive the round. Never. Bloody nose, zero equilibrium, knocked down 4 or 5 times. The kid has serious heart. Great to see and hear Randy Couture's passion for the sport and his prodigy getting in Gray's face between rounds.
Misc.
- 7-3 on the picks to start 2011.
- This was a really great card of action top to bottom as long as you exclude the McKee/Volkmann fight.
- WTF is ION Television? I don't know anybody who has this damn station. UFC, work things out with Spike TV already.
- I like listening to each fighter call the other "kid" as a back handed compliment.
- The "Bully" sweared as his eyes got red at the press conference and I thought he was going to start throwing a tantrum or something.
