UFC 214 Results: A Good Night, For The Bad Guys

Main Card Results:

Jon Jones KO’d Daniel Cormier with Strikes at 3:01 of the 3rd round.

The result was heartbreaking especially when DC fought such a great fight up until the point he was defeated. What can you say? Cormier was fighting hard when Jon faked low with the kick and went high. Jones' left foot cracked into DC who went sprawling around the cage trying valiantly to regain his composure. Once Daniel finally went to his back, "Bones" was all over him delivering killing elbows forcing the stoppage.

* Cormier was concussed after the fight, stumbling around, and unsure of what had transpired. Joe Rogan, who in the past has complained about interviewing fighters immediately after knockouts, tried to get a word from Daniel who was distraught and in tears. It was the absolute worst time Rogan could have picked to interview a fighter, and against his own judgment, did it anyway. Expect a far too late apology on Twitter tomorrow.

* For his part, Jones said all of the right things after the fight. He showed respect and acted overcome falling to his knees and pretending to cry. Sorry folks, MMAFO has seen this happen too many times in the past to believe it. Write this down. Jon Jones is still the same terrible human being he was, and this facade will shatter revealing the true devil that hides behind his calculating face. Bet.

* "Bones" Jones called out Brock Lesnar for his next fight which is absolutely ridiculous. Not because it couldn't happen because it could. And might. No, its more of a disgrace that it could happen even though Lesnar failed multiple PED tests for his last fight at UFC 200 against Mark Hunt, and has not served his suspension or paid his fine. WME IMG will do anything to make a quick buck on the business whether it will hurt it in the long run or not. Brock Lesnar does not deserve another fight in the UFC!

Tyron Woodley defeated Demian Maia by Unanimous Decision (50-45, 49-46 2x) in yet another atrocious title defense.

Just...gawd...awful. Woodley and Maia set a record for least amount of strikes landed in a 5 round fight! Demian was completely shut down and never landed a takedown in over 20 attempts! The crowd was booing incessantly and at one point were even waving their phones with the lights on trying to entertain themselves. Tyron was so careful and limited with his striking, that nothing occurred of note. In the Octagon, an indignant Woodley stood, hands crossed, and was unapologetic for his lack of effort. Get them fans "chosen one" (ha).

* Post fight, UFC President Dana White stated that a potential tight fight with Tyron Woodley versus a returning Georges St. Pierre, is now off the table based upon tonight's lack of performance.

* The UFC will not try to put Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping against Georges St. Pierre, yet again.

Cristiane Justino TKO’d Tonya Evinger via Knees at 1:56 of the 3rd round as “Cyborg” finally became a UFC Champion!

"Cyborg" was cool, calculating, cruel, and in short, impressive. Justino used patience for a change of pace boxing up Evinger and stuffing her takedown attempts. It was only a matter of time as everyone expected, but Tonya showed real heart even if she was not happy with her own performance.

* "Cyborg" finally, and deservedly, has UFC gold and her biggest detractor, UFC President Dana White, had to put the belt around her waist. Wonderful.

* Next up for Justino could be "Alpha" Cat Zingano who wants the belt and hopefully not Holly Holm who we respect and don't want to see hurt. We're all still wondering why Megan Anderson dropped out of this potential contest and what exactly happened.

Robbie Lawler defeated Donald Cerrone by Unanimous Decision (29-28 3x) in an action filled brawl.

Great fight, great fight! It's rare that heavily hyped bouts live up to their billing, but this is that rare care where it did. The contestants were neck and neck in a slugfest from the opening bell when Lawler blitzed Cerrone. It was a very close fight and MMAFO scored the contest for "Cowboy" but it was close and we had adult beverages in our system. This should have been 5 rounds and oh the glory we would've seen! Good on both fellas for the effort. "Fight of the Night"

* Robbie Lawler says he is going to visit ailing mentor Matt Hughes but then he should be the #1 contender and get a rematch with "Snooze Blanket" Tyron Woodley.

* Cowboy let the division know post fight, he isn't going anywhere and plans on many more fights.

Volkan Oezdemir KO’d Jimi Manuwa via Punches a mere 0:42 into the opening round.

"No time," the appropriate new nickname (though MMAFO's nickname of Voltron is much better) was on point as Manuwa clinched up with the Swede and ate a bevy of uppercuts and body shots for his efforts. A reeling Jimi was then pushed to the ground by Oezdemir who put in the coffin nails and we have ourselves a new contender in the shallow Light Heavyweight division. Let's not get too excited as Volkan needed 0:14 seconds more to finish the job that in his last fight. C'mon "Oz," you're slipping. "KO of the Night"

FXX Prelims Results:

Ricardo Lamas TKO’d Jason Knight with pinpoint Strikes at 4:34 of the opening round.

Yup, too much too soon for "Hick" Diaz. Why the UFC allowed this to happen to a rising star is beyond us. Knight tried to take the fight to Lamas but Ricardo showed what a veteran he really is. The "Bully" landed accuracy, heavy blows, and Jason tried to eat them but could not. Ricardo absolutely punished the kid and won in spectacular fashion. Knight could still be good, as long as he is not matched up with the elite of the 145 division while he is still growing.

Aljamain Sterling defeated Renan Pegado by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-27, 30-26).

"Al-Jo" has never looked better, and in fact looked like a real potential contender since he entered the UFC with all that hype back in early '14. Sorry we doubted you "Funk Master" and "Barao" really looks like the weight cuts and in cage wars have ruined him early. Renan just cannot take the punishment he needs to be able to absorb for his in-your-face attack style to flourish.

Brian Ortega submitted Renato Moicano via Guillotine Choke at 3:59 of the final round.

What an unexpectedly great fight! It was two stellar Jiu-Jitsu grapplers throwing down in a kickboxing fight! These guys just battered each other for an exciting 3 rounds until Renato foolishly shot in for a takedown and landed in Brian's grip. The hold was so tight that the Brazilian black belt tapped quickly to end an engaging contest. Great job fellas and we can't wait to see you both compete again soon. "Submission of the Night"

Calvin Kattar defeated Andre Fili by Unanimous Decision (30-27 3x).

Fight Pass Prelims Results:

Alexandra Albu defeated Kailin Curran by Unanimous Decision (29-28 3x).

Ya gotta love the chutzpah of Curran. Kailin was a game opponent taking clean shot after shot to the face as she fought with straight up posture and a lack of defense. Albu had built up a lead with her accurate striking early and a 3rd round push from Curran just wasn't enough. It was an exciting fight though it may be the end of Kailin in the UFC.

Jarred Brooks defeated Eric Shelton by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

Drew Dober KO’d Josh Burkman via Left Hook at 3:04 of the initial round.

Hey Josh, will you go away now?

MMAFO went the standard 9-3 on the picks. Sorry we doubted you "T-City."
