UFC 241 Cormier vs. Miocic 2: Fight Card, Half-Assed Musings + Odds!

August 17, 2019
Honda Center
Anaheim, CA
Main Card on PPV (9pm/CT):
Heavyweight Champion #1 Daniel Cormier (22-1) -145 vs. #2 Stipe Miocic (18-3) +125 [Rematch]
The OG "Champ Champ" is back, for perhaps, the last time! The Hall of Fame career of "DC" is coming to an end and all MMA fans should take note! The UFC Heavyweight Champion, Strikeforce Grand Prix Champion, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, KOTC Champion, XMMA Champion, NCAA Division-1 All-American, and 2018 Fighter of the Year, returns to defend his belt against a man he knocked into the shadow realm just over a year ago.

The "Dadfather" is looking to legacy here, coming off back surgery, and it's always a worry when a fighter has called it a career before their final fight.

For Stipe's part, he got knocked out in his last outing in the very 1st round, and then stayed on his back kicking and screaming like a petulant child for over a year, refusing to fight and demanding a rematch. The UFC rewarded him for his tantrum when Brock Lesnar wisely decided to stay in the "pro wrestling" ring. Our anger at his antics aside, Miocic has crazy power, good takedown defense, and can take a vicious beating and keep fighting.

With the power here, either guy can land and his foe will go down. The likelihood is both men play it more safe this time around with "DC" working the uppercuts in the clinch and showing how much faster and accurate his hands are for a later finish.

Nate Diaz (19-11) +115 vs. Anthony Pettis (22-8) -135
Fans of the 209 rejoice! Nathan Donald Diaz disappeared for a couple of years but he is back to wreck everything in his path! Diaz is in great shape and though he's been absent, you can expect his relentless hands to be in top form.

Nobody can make a case for Pettis' heart. The guy has quit in multiple appearances and is constantly questioning himself, changing his game in camps, and jumping around to any weight class that will have him. Dude is mentally weak but, if he gets rolling, he can still be dangerous. A quick look at his resume and you see that he loses every time he faces the elite.

Nate isn't going to exploit Tony's suspect ground game and will instead come in striking. Everyone thinks they're fine against the Diaz brothers until they suddenly aren't. MMAFO fully expects Pettis to wilt at some point under the pressure and "Pretty Tony" is on tilt while Nathan is chill and ready.

#5 Yoel Romero (13-3) -140 vs. #9 Paulo Costa (12-0) +120

I mean, we've never liked Yoel, but if, IF, he is a clean fighter, we need to bury that criticism. We still have doubts but we will leave them there while reminding everyone this is the (ahem, scoff) "Soldier of God," who has blatantly cheated against Tim Kennedy (remained on the stool for a lo000ng 30 seconds), Chris Weidman (stool trick #2), Ronaldo Souza (fence grabbing). Romero has come razor close to the Middleweight strap but fallen short 3 goddamn times (including interim shots and shots he botched by missing weight)! It's an awful showing for any self-respecting mixed martial artist but it largely goes ignored because Yoel is a jacked motherfucker.

Speaking of jacked motherfuckers... we have physical freak "Borrachinha" out here in leaked videos getting illegal I.V.'s after the weigh-ins for his fights with  Johny Hendricks fight and Oluwale Bamgbose! Fucking twice (!) and he only got a fine and 6-month suspension. USADA isn't nearly hard enough on these cheaters!

So, we have two, allegedly, roided to the the gills physical specimens in conflict while dripping PED's from their pores. MMAFO doesn't care who wins because fuck em both. Anywho, Romero will get his takedowns if need be and Costa won't be able to stop that.

Gabriel Benítez (21-6) +240 vs. Sodiq Yusuff (9-1) -280

This is a showcase for "Super" Sodiq. This bout doesn't really deserve to be on the main card.

Derek Brunson (19-7) +125 vs. Ian Heinisch (13-1) -145

"Hurricane" Heinisch is a walking TV movie having been a drug dealer, international trafficker, and served time on Riker's Island. The Colorado wrestler has become more of a banger in MMA but he can drain his own gas tank.

Brunson has to have one of the lowest in-cage I.Q.'s of all time. This guy is just a disaster in there. He has skills and natural ability, but you can generally bank on him fucking things up if he faces anyone decent.

Ian may or may not pass this test but he's fun to watch and we've seen all we need to see from Derek in the UFC.

Prelims on ESPN (7pm/CT):
Devonte Smith (10-1) -800 vs. Khama Worthy (14-6) +550

Jesus, Devonte is having trouble finding a damn opponent. John Makdessi and Clay Collard both dropped out making Khama Worthy (ha). "King Kage" krushes here.

WiNNER-Devonte Smith by Rd.2 TKO

#2 Raphael Assunção (27-6) +170 vs. #6 Cory Sandhagen (11-1) -200

The UFC never does Raph any favors do they? The #2 ranked Bantamweight has gone 11-3 since joining the UFC in 2011 and has been murdering 135s in the last 4 years without a fucking title shot. Bullshit.

Corey is on the come-up but he ain't ready for this, yet.

Upset Pick WiNNER-Raphael Assuncao by Decision

Manny Bermudez (14-0) -150 vs. Casey Kenney (12-1-1) +130

"The Bermudez Triangle" (fucking great nickname dude) is undefeated (3-0 in the UFC) and tapping bitches left and right.

Kenny is okay, and we'll always love him for defeating habitual bitcher Ray Borg, but eh. It should be Manny's night.

Drakkar Close (10-1-1) -170 vs. Christos Giagos (17-7) +150

Prelims on UFC Fight Pass (5:30pm/CT):
Hannah Cifers (9-3) -280 vs. Jodie Esquibel (6-5) +240

"Shockwave's" biggest hurdle seems to be the interviews over the fight. The understated Hannah is quite strong while Jodie obviously has no business being in the UFC. Cifers wins and charms us with her reserved nature.

WiNNER-Hannah Cifers by Decision

Kyung Ho Kang (15-8) -200 vs. Brandon Davis (10-6) +170

"Mr. Perfect" is slowly making his way up the Bantamweight ranks after a long stint in the Korean Army and he has been making up for lost time going for broke in his latest outings. Guy is becoming "must-watch" just because of his aggressiveness.

There is only 1 "Killa-B" sir, and that sir, is Ben Saunders. Change your nickname when you return to the minor leagues.

WiNNER-Kyung Ho Kang by Decision

Sabina Mazo (6-1) -130 vs. Shana Dobson (3-2) +110

This is likely not gonna be a good fight.
