Top 10 MMA Flyweights

The UFC has announced the Flyweight division is coming to Zuffa and will be featured in a mini-tournament on March 3rd. The UFC on FX 2 show has Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian McCall and Joseph Benavidez vs. Yasuhiro Urushitani. The winners will then fight at a later date to crown the inaugural Flyweight Champion. With the new 125 lb. class coming in its time to get to know your Top 10 Flyweights.

MMAFO Top 10 Flyweights
1 Ian McCall (11-2)
The Tachi Palace Champion (which he will vacate upon entering the Octagon) playfully known as “Uncle Creepy” just won the title in his last bout and has won 4 in a row. A strange character who defeated Jussier da Silva in February of this year is widely regarded as the #1 Flyweight in the world today.

2 Jussier da Silva (12-1)
The Shooto Brazil Flyweight Champion enjoys submitting opponents with Jiu-Jitsu as his specialty. Silva has won 3 in a row and holds a notable win over Shinichi Kojima while losing only once to Mr. McCall. "Formiga" must be signed to the UFC Flyweight cast!

3 Joseph Benavidez (15-2)
“Joe B-Wan Kenobe” has had 9 bouts under Zuffa management losing only to current Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz. Now at his proper weight, the Team Alpha Male wrestling beast has beaten some of the best at 135 and should be a favorite in this tournament.

4 Yasuhiro Urushitani (19-4-6)
The highly regarded Flyweight from Japan held (he will relinquish the belt when he joins the UFC) the Shooto Flyweight Championship. The Japanese counter striker has a 5 five winning streak and tends to win fights on points.

5 Demetrious Johnson (14-2) "Mighty Mouse" gave a valiant fight against Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz but his size was the issue. Now the ultra-fast wrestler has beaten the likes of Miguel Torres, Norifumi Yamamoto, and Damacio Page with some of the best credentials in this list.

5 Mamoru Yamaguchi (26-6-3) The Roots fighter just lost to Jussier da Silva ending a 6 fight wining streak with remarkable striking. The Tachi Palace Fighter would make a great addition to the team and excites fans with his go for broke style. Another "need" for the UFC.

7 Rambaa Somdet (9-2) 8 wins in a row for the Thai kickboxer who is ready to be tested by the elite if he can get into the bigger shows to show his exciting style.

8 Darrell Montague (9-2) The "Mongoose" has been rolling in Tachi Palace Fights until meeting the Champion Ian McCall. The youngster is ready to make some noise in the division if given the chance.

9 Shinichi Kojima (11-4-5) The former Shooto King is back winning two in a row and "BJ" is motivated.

10 John Dodson (11-5) The very irritating Judas is unbelieveably fast with great striking and when motivated can stop about anyone. If controlled by coach Greg Jackson he could make waves in very quick fashion coming off his TUF 14 win.

Other notable Flyweights to watch for include Pat Runez, Yuki Shojo, Kiyotaka Shimizu, Louis Gaudinot, Mitsuhisa Sunabe, Dustin Ortiz, and Akira Kibe.

The new division will be fast and very exciting with the talent level being much deeper than Bantamweight. It will be interesting to see who all the UFC monopoly gobbles up and which already employed fighters drop weight to try the new weight class.
