Strikeforce Melendez vs Masvidal Picks & Prognostications

Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal
December 17, 2011
Valley View Casino
San Diego, Calif.

Main Bouts (Showtime):
Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez (19-2) vs. Jorge Masvidal (22-6) The #1 Lightweight in the world defends his title against a highly underrated and hungry "Gamebred." The Mexican storm has been destroying in his last 5 impressive wins in a row while Jorge just beat two top contenders while constantly showing improvement. I really like the aggressive ATT striker and think he has a bright future, but "El Nino" is another matter altogether. As mentioned before, Melendez is the #1 Lightweight in the world! Not Frankie Edgar who is an amazing fighter and champion. Gilbert has absolutely all the tools and brings it with non-stop speed, accuracy, and more recently, power. His scramble and grappling ability is consistently sharpened with the Skrap Pack as he overwhelms competition. Masvidal is smart and young and can hang in this fight. It's his chances at winning I don't see. In the long run this is a great time for Masvidal testing himself against the best in the world with nothing to lose and absolutely everything to gain. Anything can happen in MMA but Gilbert is waging a war against the Lightweight rankings and looking to make a point while trapped in Strikeforce.
WINNER-Gilbert Melendez by Rd.3 TKO

Featherweight Champion Cristiane Santos (10-1) vs. Hiroko Yamanaka (12-1) The undisputed #1 Women's P4P fighter finally returns and with a solid opponent. Its very hard to find credible women to face "Femborg" but "Cat's Eye" is a well rounded fighter with an 8 fight winning streak. Its too bad she is going to be another victim of the brutally impressive violence that comes from Santos. The "Femborg" just overwhelms with her natural athleticism and hits harder than most trains. Let's just hope Yamanaka doesn't leave on a stretcher.
WINNER-Cristiane Santos by Rd.1 KO

Gegard Mousasi (31-3-2) vs. Ovince St-Preux (11-4) Gegard has won 3 meaningless bouts and got robbed by the judges in a close fight against Keith Jardine (who is a shell of his former self) which ended in a Draw. OSP has been developing nicely running up 8 wins in a row growing in competition while Mousasi goes off on meaningless bouts making people wonder how serious he is with noted training missteps. Gegard is naturally more talented but you just can't rely on the guy coming in good condition. Technique will seal the day but not after Mousasi survives an early attack by OSP who hangs in a close match.
WINNER-Gegard Mousasi by Decision

K.J. Noons (10-4) vs. Billy Evangelista (11-1) Two losses in a row for the overrated boxer while Billy just suffered is 1st career loss to the #1 contender in the Main Event. Even sooo and very unfortunately, KJ should rule the day here. Evangelista doesn't have the most impressive game but a motivated Noons should sprawl and strike to a lopsided win.
WINNER-KJ Noons by Decision

Prelims (non-televised):
Justin Wilcox vs. Caros Fodor The "Silverback" is quietly building a nice career notching 6 in a row built off his grappling and improved striking via AKA. Fodor is built to be taken down by Wilcox and I seriously doubt he can pull the submission off his back while eating the "Silverback's" G&P.
WINNER-Justin Wilcox by Rd.3 TKO

Jerron Peoples vs. Roger Bowling Jerron went 1-2 against Bobby Voelker and got a decision during the feud. Roger didn't come near making weight but he'll probably knock the kid silly.
WINNER-Roger Bowling by Rd.1 KO

Devin Cole vs. Gabriel Salinas-Jones Welcome back convicted rapist Devin Cole. Wonderful to see Zuffa employing this outstanding human being while cutting Miguel Torres for a "rape joke." GSS, grab a choke and don't ever let go.
WINNER-Gabriel Salinas-Jones by Rd.1 Submission

Fernando Gonzalez vs. Eddie Mendez Take the up and comer against the guy on a two fight skid.
WINNER-Eddie Mendez Rd.2 TKO

Herman Terrado vs. Chris Brown Of course, Chris is known for his most impressive win, beating Rihanna and creating awful Hip Hop music. Oh wait, that's the wrong guy. Oh, the fighter is a striker and so is his opponent. Flip a coin I suppose.
WINNER-Herman Terrado by Decision
