UFC 140: Jones vs Machida Picks & Prognostications

UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida
December 10, 2011
Air Canada Centre
Toronto, Canada

Main Bouts (PPV):
Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones (14-1) vs. Lyoto Machida (17-2) The youngest, cockiest, and most annoying UFC Champion returns to try and retain the belt that only Chuck Liddell defended more than twice in one of the most successful years for any MMA warrior. The "Machida Era" was as dominant as I expected and Lyoto finds himself back in the big fight by only kicking the face off of a 84 year old Randy Couture which doesn't really make sense except for the face that Machida was a replacement for Rashad Evans. Anywho, Lyoto has his pinpoint run and hide striking while Jones is the Larry Bird of MMA bringing the creative on the fly offense and massive size and reach advantage. This may be a fascinating bout but I still see "Bones" getting the win as Machida shrinks against the myriad of strikes coming his way before getting taken down late where everyone gets raped by Jones.
WINNER-Jon Jones by Rd.4 TKO

Frank Mir (15-5) vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (33-6-1) [Rematch] Though the Upset in Brazil by "Big Nog" on that overrated TUF bitch was one of the best moments of the year, I just think time caught "Minotauro" long ago and the end comes soon. Mir is the prodding solid Heavyweight he always was winning some and losing some but always staying near the title picture. Mir is far more healthy and I think a more complete fighter at this point though you cannot count out the heart of Rodrigo. Frank will most likely do much of the same from the 1st meeting, working slowly but steadily on the feet while Nog withers before our eyes as parts begin to fall off his body. If we hit the mat which I doubt, the men will cancel each other out.
WINNER-Frank Mir by Decision

Tito Ortiz (16-9-1) vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (19-5) Two grizzled veterans meet for the very 1st time long after their primes have past them by. We know what these men bring to the game and though I think Ortiz finds success early with his double leg takedowns, he will suck air late as always fading as "Minotoro" picks him apart and begins landing that solid left hand. Tito is done and let the talk of retirement begin.
WINNER-Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by Decision

Claude Patrick (14-1) vs. Brian Ebersole (48-14-1) The oddest domed fighter in the game today meets the vaunted "Hairrow" in some Odd Couple matchmaking. The "Prince" won't shock you or even make you realize he's there until its too late as Brian is looking to entertain with odd movements and inventive offense. Ebersole will use his strangeness to befuddle Pat who prods on as he is oft to do without really impressing anyone while Brian pulls ahead with crowd pleasing weirdness.
WINNER-Brian Ebersole by Decision

Mark Hominick (20-9) vs. Chan Sung Jung (11-3) Mark returns from a loss to Champion Jose Aldo which actually upped his stock while the "Korean Zombie" is coming back from his possible "Submission Of The Year" twister at UFN 24. Hominick is just far more skilled and tougher while Jung is known for making silly mistakes stateside. It will be an exciting affair but the hometown hero holds the day.
WINNER-Mark Hominick by Rd.2 TKO

Prelims (ION Television):
Krzysztof Soszynski (26-11-1) vs. Igor Pokrajac (23-8) My favorite anti-PED fighter returns to face Igor who also lost to Mr. Stephan Bonnar recently. The "Duke" doesn't wow me anywhere while Soszynski has survived some wars and is constantly improving his very solid well rounded game. Take the painted Pollock and enjoy the mispronunciations.
WINNER-Krzysztof Soszynski by Decision

Jared Hamman (13-3) vs. Constantinos Philippou (8-2) "Ham Man" has looked good at Middleweight and his current porno stache is beautiful as he looks to ply his trade of stand up skills with a mad skinny body. Constance is a Serra-Longo fighter looking to also provide action in the stand up form. Constantinos is a frightening fella but Jared has a noted chin and technically staunch striking which will pay dividends as Philippou tires late.
WINNER-Jared Hamman by Decision

Dennis Hallman (43-14-12) vs. John Makdessi (9-0) Hallman showed up wearing tight panties that offended all in his last outing, but the well traveled veteran missed weight for this contest while John is training with Canada's and GSP's Tri Star Gym. I'm not sure with the weight cut failure to Lightweight what condition Hallman will be in to use his smothering wrestling for a judges nod. Makdessi must sprawl as if his life is on the line and land something big with his power stand up while avoiding the mat like it contains AIDS.
WINNER-John Makdessi by Rd.3 TKO

Yves Jabouin (16-7) vs. Walel Watson (9-2) The "Gazelle," my 2nd favorite MMA fighter with a penis tattoo on his chest, is a lanky fella with some stand up but noted for his slick grappling. "Tiger" has fought at a much higher level of competition and is a sturdy veteran. I've some strange feeling that Walel is going to pull an Upset here that nobody see's coming, but I'll be conservative and go with the favorite.
WINNER-Yves Jabouin by Decision

Prelims (Facebook):
Nik Lentz (21-3-2) vs. Mark Bocek (9-4) The "Carny" is able to do one thing and one thing well. He wrestles guys to the ground and does the L&P without shame for 15 minutes. Mark has looked great recently at Lightweight though he has lost against top talent. Bocek will rely on his Jiu-Jitsu skills which puts him at a disadvantage on the floor since wrestling tends to garner more points in the judges eyes. I just believe Mark is enough of a well rounded fighter to find the way against my rational thinking to pull things out for Canada in a close decision.
WINNER-Mark Bocek by Decision

Rich Attonito (10-4) vs. Jake Hecht (10-2) The "Bull" is still here training out of ATT while Heck with a "t" is unknown. Who wins who cares?
WINNER-Rich Attonito by Decision

John Cholish (7-1) vs. Mitch Clarke (9-0) Cholish the Renzo Gracie student and ivy league man has a wee bit o' hype coming in while Mitch has an inflated record against nobody's.
WINNER-John Cholish by Rd.2 Submission
