Miguel Torres CUT From UFC For "Rape Joke"

Recently UFC Bantamweight and former champion Miguel Torres made an inappropriate joke about rape on Twitter. The full tweet was:

"If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone like surprises."

For that little comment. "Angel" has been cut from the UFC roster according to President Dana White during a Sports Illustrated interview today.

Not a week before, Forrest Griffin, considered one of the "most creative" MMA fighters on Twitter by the Ultimate Fighting Championship, tweeted:

"Rape is the new missionary."

The light heavyweight deleted the tweet from his timeline, but Bloody Elbow was quick to embed it on their site. According to their report, Griffin made the same joke two hours earlier and then repeated it.

After a female follower tweeted that she had decided to unfollow Griffin after the tweet, the fighter fired back, "Keep it to yourself nobody cares." He also claimed that following him is a privilege. Jezebel pointed out that this deleted tweet was just the latest in a string of recent tweets referencing rape in some fashion.

If that wasn't enough, Rashad Evans, at the UFC on Fox 2 presser, made a joke to Penn State alumni Phil Davis about the recent rape allegations on the campus by the now notorious Jerry Sandusky.

"I guarantee you'll be the first one to take a shot, 'cuz I'm gonna put those hands on you worse than that other dude did at Penn State."

Personally, I find all the rape jokes amusing and think it's a free world where you can say what you want a la freedom of speech. Zuffa has the right to fire anyone for any reason but it does seem as though there is a triple standard at play.

Once again Dana has reacted harshly as he is oft to do, and ruined a fighters immediate future on a rash decision. Torres was only quoting the TV show Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia which he had been watching. This is no reason to fire a bad ass fighter who hasn't tried to cheat in competition (unlike Chael Sonnen) or hurt anyone outside of the Octagon (Anthony Johnson beat his girlfriend) or engaged in illegal activities (Melvin Guillard tested positive after a fight for cocaine). Its just stupid but here are some more rape jokes to keep things festive.
