UFC Fight Night 43 Te Huna vs Marquardt: Picks, Prognostications, & Odds

June 28, 2014
Vector Arena
Auckland, New Zealand
Well this card is so terrible that the UFC is hiding it early in the morning and just hoping for a few highlights for the night show. We return to New Zealand which is almost like Australia so Soa Palelei will enjoy the feels from the crowd.
Main Card on UFC Fight Pass:
James Te Huna (16-7) -210 vs. Nate Marquardt (32-13-2) +170

According to Marquardt, God, yes God, wanted him to go back to Middleweight. Hmmm. Okay. Anywho, both men are coming off losses and looking to stay employed.
Sing it with us, “I don’t want to fuck with Te Huna, because Te Huna, will fuck with me!” Offspring fans get it. Moving on, James punches with murderous power and has good takedown defense. A weakness, when put on his back, Te Huna can’t get up.
Marquardt has done it all in his career. He was a King of Pancrase. A title contender. A TRT cheater who jumped around to different weight classes and even snuck away with the Strikeforce Welterweight title. But, Nate has looked old in his last three fights that were all losses. Two of those were bad KO losses and the writing seems to be on the wall for Marquardt’s career.
Nate is far more talented of a fighter but at this stage in the game, his time is over. Te Huna is dropping down from 205 to enjoy a size advantage and quite frankly, Nate’s chin is past being suspect. I don’t know what PED’s Chael Sonnen can give Nate that will help him here, but he'll most likely get by on the fact that Te Huna is a one trick pony that can punch and little else.
Upset Pick WINNER-Nate Marquardt by Decision

Soa Palelei (21-3) +115 vs. Jared Rosholt (10-1) -145

Its a battle of Heavyweights who will never contend for the belt or the Top 10. Nice intro huh?
Soa is a big hitter who likes to literally sit on top of guys wearing them out. His gas is limited and he’s 36.
Rosholt is a good wrestler who is looking to make his first run with the big boys.
Its hard to see Rosholt not taking Palelei down over and over again. When Jake does, he’ll tire the big man and likely put on a clinic until the long 15 are up. Palelei has a puncher’s chance but that’s about it.
WINNER-Jared Rosholt by Decision

Hatsu Hioki (27-7-2) +160 vs. Charles Oliveira (17-4,1) -200

The people’s Main Event, features two skilled grapplers who can use their hands as well.
Hioki was thought to be a contender when he came over from Japan but he’s gone 3-3 with lackluster efforts. Hioki has a good pace and crawls all over opponents looking for subs.
“Do Bronx” at 24, kinda got sacrificed early in his career meeting the likes of Frankie Edgar, Cub Swanson, Donald Cerrone, and Jim Miller, all for losses. These really aren’t fair examples as the Brazilian has beaten every mortal man put in his path. Oliveira can mix up his striking well and is a long fighter at 5’11”. The Macaco Gold Team fighter is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt.
We just haven’t seen the skills that made people think Hioki is a contender, while “Do Bronx” has only learned and improved by facing the absolute best in the world at such a tender age. We see Charles continuing to improve as he ages as he puts the stomp on Hatsu who has shown zero development.
WINNER-Charles Oliveira by Rd.2 TKO

Robert Whittaker (11-4) -305 vs. Mike Rhodes (6-2) +235

Ugh, this card gets terrible in a hurry folks. Robert Whittaker is here to stomp around the cage and punch up Rhodes for which nobody will care.

WINNER-Robert Whittaker by Bla Bla Bla
Prelims on UFC Fight Pass:
Jake Matthews (4-0) -120 vs. Dashon Johnson (9-0) -110
Dashon is a boxer who has turned to MMA. He has fought absolutely nobody and we have little idea as to his talent level.

Matthews is a TUF Smashes throwaway which is even worse than TUF America cast offs. And yet, he goes by the nickname the "Celtic Kid" and anyone representing Ireland can't be all bad. As an Aussie, Jake will also have the crowd in his favor and is decent at all facets of the game. These small things give him the edge.
Upset Pick WINNER-Jake Matthews by Decision

Richie Vaculik (9-2) -155 vs. Roldan Sangcha-an (4-0) +125

The Flyweight Aussie is very aggressive and loves to scrap all over the cage. To be completely honest, we have no idea who Roldan is or what he brings to the table.
WINNER-Richie Vaculik by Decision

Chris Indich (5-2) -120 vs. Vik Grujic (6-3) -110

Vik has lost 3 of his last 4 and Chris is a tough as nails gritty competitor who will force an ugly fight. Jesus tits this card is terrible. If I lived in New Zealand I wouldn't attend this shit.
WINNER-Chris Indich by Decision

Neil Magny (10-3) -260 vs. Claudio Silva (10-1) +200

Magny is a decent striker with a massive reach advantage on Lima who is filling in on a month's notice. Neil has won two in a row and one has to wonder who he pissed off to be buried beneath this trash on such a dreadful card.
WINNER-Neil Magny by Decision

Dan Hooker (10-4) -105 vs. Ian Entwistle (8-1) -125

Wake back up people this is actually an interesting fight! Entwistle, which is just a great name by the way, is a leg lock specialist and grappler supreme who has never seen the 2nd round in his young career.

Your mom, I mean, the Hooker, will have the size advantage and is also very aggressive and likes to finish fights.

Danny seems a bit young at this point as Ian latches on to a limb and takes it back to England.
WINNER-Ian Entwistle by Rd.1 Submission

Gian Villante (11-5) -305 vs. Sean O’Connell (15-5) +235

Is someone playing a trick on us? Villante still has a job! Can't be true. Last out Chris Weidman's life partner shat the bed in the very worst way. Gian gasses almost instantly and became a heavy bag for Fabio Maldonado. It was one of the worst showings we've ever seen in the UFC cage. Yes, it was that bad.

The "Real OC" (what a miserable nickname) didn't do much better in his debut as he got TKO'd by Ryan Jimmo.

This is a battle of two terrible fighters and Gian cannot be considered anything but a bust at this point in his career. However, this is a fight Villante should win. He's a better all around fighter but his last performance was so pathetic it is very hard to pick him. Still, O'Connell brings nothing to the table here.
WINNER-Gian Villante by Decision
