It was, quite frankly, a terrible night of fights at UFC Fight Night 42. There was controversy or just plain cheating in 4 of the 6 main card fights and the referee's were abysmal. Just a bad evening folks but here's what happened.
Main Card Results (FOX Sports 1)
Benson Henderson submitted Rustam Khabilov at 1:16 of Round 4 with a Rear-Naked Choke.
It was a pretty close Main Event going into the 4th round as “Smooth” was down 2-1 on the scorecards but rallied behind a blistering right uppercut that hurt the “Tiger.”
It was a pretty close Main Event going into the 4th round as “Smooth” was down 2-1 on the scorecards but rallied behind a blistering right uppercut that hurt the “Tiger.”
“Bendo” struggled with Rustam’s stellar grappling early but Henderson’s endurance levels continue to be off the charts while Khabilov began to tire in the later rounds. Though the Russian found himself in dominant position more often than not, he could not control Benson on the mat and never secured any meaningful holds or strikes during the bout.
When “Bendo” landed the uppercut, Khabilov sunk against the cage and Henderson latched on with a lightening quick RNC to secure the tapout.
MMA Fight Fallout
It was the stoppage victory Benson needed to reinvigorate his standing in the Lightweight division. With multiples losses to the current Champion Anthony Pettis, and the fact that the belt won’t be contested until December, Henderson still has time to make his way up the Lightweight ladder. Ben could welcome back TJ Grant should he ever return from his concussion injury, or more likely, a bout against fellow winner on this night, Rafael dos Anjos.
“Hobby Lobby” equated himself nicely in a bout where we didn’t believe he had much of a shot. This is one of those rare loss ups your stock moments and another strong test against the likes of Danny Castillo, Joe Lauzon, or Jaime Varner if he could return in a timely fashion from an broken ankle. "Submission of the Night"
Diego Sanchez was gifted the most controversial Split Decision win ever in modern MMA over Ross Pearson (27-30, 30-27, 29-28)!

"Submission of the Night"
Diego Sanchez was gifted the most controversial Split Decision win ever in modern MMA over Ross Pearson (27-30, 30-27, 29-28)!
Ross busted up Diego and landed far more strikes while Diego punched arms and air while screaming and waving his opponent forward with his arms only to be tagged time and time again.
MMA Oddsbreaker, Fight Metric, MMA Fighting, Sherdog, MMA Junkie, Bleacher Report, Bloody Elbow, The MMA Report, Severe MMA, MMA Mania, and MMA Fight Opinion, all scored the bout 30-27 for Pearson. The only different scorecard we could find in the media was at BJ Penn.com who scored the bout 29-28 Pearson.
Judges JEFF COLLINS scored the bout 30-27 Sanchez and should be fired and never allowed to judge a MMA fight again.
This was a bad joke and an absolute travesty! There is no, and we mean zero, chance that Diego won this fight. Ross out landed Sanchez in every round and even dropped the hometown hero in the 2nd round.
Please contact the New Mexico Athletic Commission at the information provided below to have this atrocity ruled a No Contest at the very least!

John Dodson TKO’d John Moraga (Doctor Stoppage) via a Knee Strike after the end of the 2nd round.
As predicted, Dodson is just the better fighter, period. Dodson was faster, didn't play with his food too much, and threw a kick that with the knee, shattered Moraga's nose at the end of the 2nd round. The doctors then took a look during the break and called the whole thing off. Good win for Dodson.
MMA Fight Fallout
Dodson is in the driver's seat at Flyweight. With Joseph Benavidez having already lost to the Champion twice, Dodson should get the next opportunity at gold should Demetrious Johnson defeat Ali Bagautinov next weekend. The stars have aligned for the "Magician."
Rafael dos Anjos TKO’d Jason High with controversial Punches to the back of the head at 3:36 of the 2nd round.
RDA was better on the feet and High found himself struggling for air early in his 1st attempt at 155. The decision was in the bag, but RDA did land about 6 punches to the back of High's head, which is illegal, before the referee halted things.
The most unfortunate moment of the fight then came when Jason shoved the referee in anger post fight. That is going to earn him a bit of punishment from the commission and the UFC.
Piotr Hallmann submitted Yves Edwards at 2:32 of Round 3 (Rear-Naked Choke) after multiple illegal eye pokes.
Let's keep the controversy going at the "Thugjitsu Master" found himself the victim of multiple eye pokes to the extent that he actually, and deliberately, gave one back to Piotr. The refs were just horrible tonight and nothing was done. Yves suffers a bad loss and is now on the chopping block though we hope he gets another chance in a more honest outing.
Bryan Caraway submitted Erik Perez at 1:52 of Round 2 (Rear-Naked Choke) after an illegal fish hook manuever.
In perhaps the ugliest bit of cheating we've seen in a while, Mr. Tate used the highly illegal fish hook which wasn't even allowed in the early wild west UFC days.. This is about as aggregious as it gets and Caraway needs to be fined or better yet, have his win ruled a No Contest. This was just terrible and it should be interesting to hear Bryan try to explain this obvious infraction away.
Prelim Results (FOX Sports 1)
Sergio Pettis defeated Yaotzin Meza by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Young Sergio played it a bit safe tonight but needed the win and we can't fault him for that.
Lance Benoist defeated Bobby Voelker via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27).
This was a bad fight between two below average fighters. Bobby has to be gone after this mess.
Scott Jorgensen defeated Danny Martinez by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) in a great back and forth fight!
Martinez was throwing massive bombs early and had Scotty J in trouble on a couple of occasions. "Young Guns" held strong though and used his wrestling game to toss Danny about the cage and prove to him what the best disipline in MMA really is. It was a great fight and one everyone needs to watch. Congrats to Scott Jorgensen on an impressive win that showed some true heart! "Fight of the Night"
Jon Tuck submitted Jake Lindsey by Heel Strike (Verbal Tapout) at 2:47 of the last round.
Young Sergio played it a bit safe tonight but needed the win and we can't fault him for that.

Jon Tuck submitted Jake Lindsey by Heel Strike (Verbal Tapout) at 2:47 of the last round.
Tuck was a smidge better than Lindsey tonight but he was gassing badly. A smart move to take the back of Jake led to a heel strike to the floating rib and Lindsey had to tapout.
Prelim Result (UFC Fight Pass)
Patrick Cummins TKO’d Roger Narvaez by Punches at 2:28 of the 2nd round.
Finally, the former Barista got the job done and used his wrestling skills to pound out Narvaez to survive another day.
8-1 on the picks as Diego did NOT win that fight and Caraway should be disqualified!
