UFC 188 Results: Werdum Becomes The UFC Undisputed Heavyweight Champion!

Fabricio Werdum submitted Cain Velasquez by Guillotine Choke 2:15 into the 3rd round to become the new undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion!

Both men throw with abandon early and a punch drops Fabricio for a moment. The men clinch against the cage as the Champion lands knees to the body and thighs. As they exit Cain is cut over the left eye but Velasquez gets a takedown. Nothing doing and Cain lets Werdum back up as we get stiff punches from both men. Werdum gets a takedown and knees Cain on the way back up. A nice leg kick from the challenger and both men are working a quick pace. Good striking from both men as an exciting 1st round ends.

The 2nd round begins, we got leg kicks from the champ as the men exchanged punches. A nice left hand for Werdum and Cain’s left eye is bleeding more. Fabricio begins landing great combinations and Cain seems to be weary on his feet. A left hook knocked Cain’s head back and Werdum is winning the striking game! Werdum is dominating and a knee drops Velasquez to a knee only to eat more punishment when he stands. It was a dominant 2nd round for the challenger.

The 3rd round see’s more grueling action at a quick pace and a head kick from Cain gets Werdum’s attention. Velasquez successfully shoots in for a takedown but gets trapped in a guillotine and quickly taps out as Fabricio Werdum becomes the new UFC undisputed Heavyweight Champion! “MVP (Performance) of the Night”

WERDUM SMILES KNOWING HE IS ABOUT TO WIN UFC GOLD!
* Lets be honest and tell the truth here people. Cain underestimated Fabricio and now infamously told AKA head coach Javier Mendez that he didn’t need to go to Mexico early to train for the altitude while Werdum had been down south for over a month! Also, Cain quit, QUIT, when he got caught in the guillotine. Velasquez was gassed out and took the choke as an opportunity to get out of the fight.

Eddie Alvarez defeated Gilbert Melendez by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) in a rather disappointing bout.

Gilbert caught Eddie with a forearm early that rocked Alvarez though he stayed on his feet. The jab was landing often for Melendez and a stat showed Gil out landing Ed 10-1 in the 1st round. Eddie’s left eye was badly swollen after the first five and had completely swollen shut during the 2nd looking quite gruesome! Rogan astutely pointed out that Eddie blew his nose between rounds causing the eye to instantly swell which smells of a broken nose. Why Melendez relaxed and didn’t attack the partially blind Alvarez is beyond us as the men cruised through the close 2nd round. MMAFO had things all tied up going into the final round as Ed got an early takedown but the men went quickly back to the standing position. There wasn’t a ton of action down the stretch but Alvarez cut open Gilbert with a nice spinning backlist as MMAFO scored the bout for Eddie in yet another disappointing bout.

* Gilbert was the least active we have ever seen him and the Skrap Pack/Cesar Gracie Camp need to realize that the lack of striking does not win fights. Melendez just didn’t go to work in the fight and all credit to Eddie who fought with one working eye and battled back from adversity.

Kelvin Gastelum defeated Nate Marquardt via TKO (Corner Stoppage) after the end of the 2nd round.

This was a complete beating from start to finish. Marquardt showed heart but he got jacked from the jump. Gastelum just landed power punch after power punch and broke down Nate. There is a case to be made that the fight should have been stopped in the 2nd round but credit Nate for rolling and attempting to fight on.

Nate was barely able to return to his corner telling his coach Trevor Whittman he, “had nothing left.” Gurdge’s head trainer stopped the fight apologizing to his fighter but making absolutely the right call to protect his student.

* MMAFO used to really like Nate until the TRT fiasco (then hated him) but it was actually hard to watch Marquardt take that kind of a beating.

Yair Rodriguez defeated Charles Rosa via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) in a very fun grappling match!

Was anyone else worried that Joe Rogan was going to jump in the cage and start sucking Yair’s dick in front of the entire crowd? Jesus, man crush much? The Mexican was good, not great, but to hear Joe, Yair was the 2nd coming of Kazushi Sakuraba despite
it actually being a pretty close fight. Anywho, a wheel kick misses for Yair to begin the affair but a leg to head switch kick lands which was really nice (-1 point for falling though). Rodriguez continues with a flying knee (that misses) but eventually secured what looked like a fight ending Triangle Choke though “Boston Strong” escaped after many perilous moments. Rodriguez brought the pressure and landed more strikes while rolling for numerous positions in an exciting final round for the decisive win. “Fight of the Night”

THE BIKINI GAME IS NOT LACKLUSTER
Tecia Torres defeated Angela Hill via Unanimous Decision (30-27 2x, 29-28) in a lackluster fight.

The Octagon looks massive with these petite warriors inside of it. Hill displays really nice takedown defense early though “TT” got the 2nd takedown attempt. Tecia can’t get out of half guard where she controls the 1st two rounds. Hill landed a few shots in the 3rd but the women spent the majority of the final five clinched against the cage for a very disappointing bout. Sometimes these things happen and the "Tiny Tornado" will be back better than ever in the future.

FX Prelim Results
Henry Cejudo defeated Chico Camus by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27).

“Cujo” walked out in an hilariously shiny Aztec Warrior outfit and proceeded to lose the initial round against the very tough Camus. Henry battled back over the next ten minutes to grind out another victory but its still too early for Cejudo to get a title shot. More work to be done.

Efrain Escudero tapped Drew Dober by Guillotine Choke at 0:54 of round uno.

Escudero grabbed Dober’s leg and swept him locking up the choke and never letting go until the tap. Well, that’s two quick fights in a row.

SSH, PEREZ IS SLEEPING
Patrick Williams submitted Alejandro Perez by Guillotine Choke  0:23 into round 1 when the Mexican went unconscious!

A Williams right hand rocked Perez who went down against the cage and Patrick latched onto a very tight choke as Alejandro went unconscious with his eyes open! Creepy but what an impressive rebound for Williams. It doesn’t get much cleaner than that. “Submission of the Night”

Johnny Case survived a bad eye poke to defeat Francisco Trevino by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

While being announced Trevino went almost all the way across the cage to do a stupid tito ortiz dance at his opponent to look like a fool. Case was landing everything early to which Franciso acted as if nothing hurt which of course means it did. Trevino then poked Case in the eye to which he screamed but he was eventually able to continue. Case controlled the contest while Francisco just postured after he continually got hit which earns you nothing on the cards.

UFC Fight Pass Prelims

Cathal Pendred defeated Augusto Montano by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) in one of the worst “fights” you will ever see.

Its hard to call this a “fight” when so little actually happened. The “Worst Hair in MMA” was on his bike early basically running away as Cathal chased him and at one point the Irishman extended his arms out to challenge “Dodger” to join the fight. The normally very popular Montano was actually getting boo’d for his lack of effort. Herb Dean actually warned Augusto between rounds that he “could” take a point for not fighting. Geez. In the 2nd, Cathal was dropped for a brief moment but used the fall as an opportunity to gain top position and control the uneventful round on the ground. Nothing happened in the 3rd round of a horrible fight.

Gabriel Benitez defeated Clay Collard by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Gabe dropped Clay seconds into the fight but the American recovered quickly. Whether it was the kicks to the body or the high altitude, Collard was huffing and puffing by the 2nd round which isn’t normal for a guy who trains with Pit Elevated. Benetiez was all over the American winning the striking exchanges and hurting Collard multiple times to the body. The pace slowed yet and Benitez secured a one sided victory on points.

* Andrew Todhunter passed out attempting to make weight (ahem, who predicted his weigh-in troubles?) and his bout against Albert Tumenov was cancelled.

UFC 188 Post Notes:

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone has fought 8 times since we last saw Cain Velasquez!

Patrick Williams sets the UFC Record for fasted submission in Bantamweight history!

Yair Rodriguez threw up in his post fight interview which is a 1st in the UFC! :)

MMAFO is quite critical of the UFC’s promotion machine but the promo’s they are using for Jose Aldo versus Conor McGregor are amazing!

Props to Fabricio Werdum for entering to the theme song for the great movie The Last of the Mohicans.

No Heavyweight Champion has defended the belt more than twice.

MMAFO continues to struggle in the picking game going a weak 6-5 this evening. Fuck.
