UFC Fight Night 57 Edgar vs. Swanson: Play-By-Play & Results

Doo Ho Choi vs. Juan Puig

Rd.1 Choi came out with a big overhand right, threw another, then another and down went Puig. The “Super Korean” followed up with on point G&P and this is ova quickly! Damn! We told you this kid had power and he delivered. You can’t have a much better debut than that! "KO of the Night"
Fight Grade- A

Doo Ho Choi TKO’d Juan Puig with Punches 0:18 into the very 1st round!

Paige VanZant vs. Kailin Curran

Rd.1 The ladies come out throwing a lot, early. They clinch up against the cage and Paige uses knee strikes while looking for the takedown. They trade body kicks and are tied up just winging punches. They clinch against the cage again and its Curran who trips VanZant to the mat though she rises back to her feet quickly. Still in the phone booth, Paige is landing some short shots and uppercuts. An inside trip and Kailin lands in top control. A big elbow lands from Curran as Paige looks for an armbar. Kailin uses momentum from the attempt to slam the blonde to the mat. Again, Pagie searches for the armbar but Curran drags her way out. Curran drops a punch standing to the downed VanZant. A beautiful sweep from Pagie who gets on top and unloads a vicious barrage. Kailin uses a leg sweep to escape a frantic 1st round. (10-9 VanZant)

Rd.2 Paige lands a left hook and takes Curran down for a brief moment. The ladies clinch against the cage battling for position until they break. A hip toss takedown from Kailin but Paige pushes off the cage with her feet. Curran drags Paige down again with a headlock but can't keep her there. VanZant is relentless with her attack clinging to Curran like saran wrap. Kailin in wincing a lot and may be tiring. Curran uses a body lock to take Zant down again as the round ends. Close fight and very hard to call. (10-9 VanZant)

Rd.3 The final round as Paige rushes to meet her opponent and takes her down to deliver a nice elbow. Two big shots from Curran but VanZant does not stop pressing forward! Body to head from Paige then back into the clinch against the cage. Paige seems to be pulling away as Curran tires. Foot stomps from both ladies look nasty and delivers a solid knee to the body before a takedown. "12 Guage" unloads strikes and the referee is forced to stop it! Wow! Great fight and amazing debut!
Fight Grade- A

Paige VanZant TKO'd Kailin Curran with Punches 2:54 into the final round.

* Not just another pretty face, this girl can fight! Holy shit did she shut our big mouth. She is crazy aggressive and really showed a knowledge of MMA in all areas. Well done.

Yves Edwards vs. Akbarh Arreola

The "Thugjitsu" master enters to Aerosmith's "Dream On" which isn't a bad song at all.

Rd.1 We begin the 66th professional fight of Mr. Edwards lands some stern leg kicks to start but Arreola lands some good punches. A good body kick from Akbarh and a right uppercut drops Yves as Arreola takes full mount and unloads. Yves recovers but Arreola catches a kick and takes the vet down for a quick armbar and the tap. Dammit. God dammit! Well, nice win for Arreola but god dammit that may be the end of Edwards. Shit.
Fight Grade- F- (Yes we are biased. Fuck off.)

Akbarh Arreola submits Yves Edwards via Armbar at 1:52 of the 1st round.

* Whelp, the night is ruined for MMAFO but we continue on through this disappointment. Did we mention, shit?
James Vick vs. Nick Hein

Rd.1 We're back to action after a small drought there, and this should be a good one. Vick looks like he should be in another weigh class but they trade a bit early gauging distance. Front kick to the body for Vick and the high kick is blocked with the arm by Hein. They exchange and a left for ze German drops James. Nick swarms into side position but Vick sweeps nicely and gets into top position. Back to the feet and James is much more cautious now. James has been using the long legged kicks like jabs so far but nothing seems to be getting through. A big knee from Vick but a counter left drops the "Texecutioner" again! Hein lets him up to deliver a left hand. James finally lands a left hand and time expires. (10-9 Hein)

Rd.2 Vick is still using the long kicks that don't connect, and would be smart to try something, anything else. Hein comes in with the 1-2 and then again after blocking another errant high kick. James isn't coming anywhere near his opponent now and then brings a nice combination as we write that. A sharp right from Vick and Hein misses over the top. Vick fakes with the hips and legs and lands a kick, finally. More faints kiddo. A small cut over the left eye of Nick and neither man in engaging now. A couple jabs from James and this fight has ground to a halt continuing the MMAFO jinx. (10-9 Vick)

Rd.3 The 1st 1:25 shows neither man landing and really just bobbing around. Finally, the two men trade a couple shots but this has turned into a tepid fight. A good left right from ze German and then a couple to the body. A good right jab from Vick who then moves away not following up. Inside leg kick from Hein and eventually that jab from James again. Three punches land for Nick as James is just moving away. A solid right hand makes Hein rethink for a moment. We pause for the mouthpiece to be given back to ze German and we begin again. The commentators seem to think Vick has this though we aren't sure why. Vick just ran away for the 3rd round and did nothing. Terrible fight. The fans lose. (10-9 Hein)
Fight Grade- D

James Vick defeated Nick Hein by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) in a head scratching score.

* Didn't Vick get dropped twice in the opening round, and yet one judge still scored it for him? Hmm, odd indeed. Again, terrible fight. MMAFO scored the fight for Hein 29-28, but neither guy deserved the win.

* Johnny Hendricks is shown in the crowd wearing a moronic and comic 50 gallon hat. Sup, tex!

Luke Barnatt vs. Roger Narvaez

Let's hope the "Bigslow" can bring a little action back to what was, a good card until that last debacle. 2-2 on the picks so far and we need to rally.

Rd.1 Barnatt and his ears begin this battle as an overhand connects on Luke but a shot to Roger's pills halts the action for the moment. Back at it and a little shuffle from Barnatt as he looks to get loose. A soft spin kick for Barnatt but a nice 1-2 is the answer from Narvaez. Roger lands an overhand right and then a solid left. Luke not doing much of anything yet and the reach advantage for Narvaez is shown as he lands a right hand. A nice left from Roger but a counter right from the "Bigslow." They trade rights and Luke drops his hands to his sides inviting his opponent in. Barnatt almost trips Narvaez to the mat but Roger recovers and time expires. (10-9 Narvaez)

Rd.2 A hard body kick lands for Roger followed by the right jab. The "Silverback" lands an overhand left and Barnatt just cannot hit the target. The boo birds are coming out now and the takedown attempt is stuffed by Barnatt. A right hand cuts Roger on his forehead but not badly. Two rights and a left for Roger who is on point when he throws the counters. Not sure what fight Brian Stann is watching, but Roger is winning despite what he is saying. There is nothing going on as we are in the final minute of the round. Luke misses and eats a right. Barnatt finally gets Narvaez against the cage and lands a left right. Body shot from Luke and an uppercut in the final seconds as the crowd boos. The final moments may have stolen the round for Barnatt. (10-9 Narvaez)

Rd.3 Final round of what has been a stinker and a left from Narvaez. An elbow stuns Barnatt and and a right hand drops Luke! Roger unloads on his grounded opponent including a vicious elbow. A big shot and Roger is looking for the RNC as he latches onto Barnatt's back. He can't get it and continues to pepper the Vrit. Luke is bleeding from the right eye and the elbow looks to be under Barnatt's chin, but Narvaez can't finish. Roger is in Luke's guard but may have gassed himself out looking for the finish. A big elbow from Roger but Luke looks recovered now. Luke pushes Roger away and then rolls back to his feet. A final kick to Narvaez's face and the fight is over. Could go either way on the cards. (10-9 Narvaez)
Fight Grade- C

Roger Narvaez defeated Luke Barnatt by Split Decision 29-28, 29-28, & 28-29).

* Looks like MMAFO got the call right and the announcers got it wrong. Ha. The "Silverback" then cuts a promo saying, "he belongs" after that average performance and yells "fight of the night" which is just ridiculous. C'mon guy.

* Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone is shown in the Texas crowd enjoying a beverage. Up next for the Jackson-Winkeljohn product is Myles Jury at UFC 182, January 3rd!

* Now we go into the Fox studios to hear yet another painful segment from girl voiced bitch Dominick Cruz, the underrated and hilarious Michael Bisping, and Jay Glazer. These are really just pointless time wasters.

* Funny little side note, Paige VanZant's official website is down due to exceeded bandwidth. No idea why. :)

Josh Copeland vs. Ruslan Magomedov

Rd.1 The big boys are up now! Jiggle em if ya got em. A knee from Magomedov but Copeland hit him with the left at the same time. A nice overhand right backs Josh up and he follows with a few punches. Left high kick from Ruslan which Stann was just warning about. Body shot from "Cuddley Bear" and then right/left has Ruslan moving away. A three shot combo drops Copeland for a moment but he recovers. The left high kick threatens again from the Russian. An overhand from Josh reaches Ruslan and a leg kick response. 1-2 lands for Magomedov and Josh misses coming in. Ruslan misses a spinning head kick to end a good round. (10-9 Magomedov)

Rd.2 Copeland takes the center as his corner commanded and we finally get the moronic redneck chants of, "USA, USA." Idiots. Anwyho, an overhand lands for Josh and then a left as he starts to find the mark. A running right hand lands for Copeland and again but he eats an uppercut and a combination in response. Nasty body kick from Ruslan into the belly. 1-2 from Copeland coming forward and then retreating. Ruslan runs into Josh's jab and a knee catches Copeland. A high kick hurt Josh who is running away. Ruslan attacks with abandon but Josh powers out of it in a do or die moment! Head kick from Magomedov and later a side kick connects. Tough round to call and a small cut on the left cheek of "Cuddly Bear." The replay shows the jump kick from Magomedov cut the cheek but did not enter the eye. A clean strike. (10-9 Magomedov)

Rd.3  Body kick from the Russian early and then a solid leg kick. Josh is switching stances now but another head kick from Ruslan. Superman punch from Magomedov and a left uppercut. A right coming forward hits for the Russian but a left hand rocks Ruslan's head back. They clinch against the cage and some foot stomps which gotta fucking hurt. Copeland looks at the clock and he takes a knee to the body. Another knee as they hand fight and the referee breaks them apart. Both men have slowed down considerably in the final minute and a 1-2 lands for the Russian. A double leg secures the fight for Magomedov who should earn a shutout on the cards. (10-9 Magomedov)
Fight Grade- C+

Ruslan Magomedov defeated Josh Copeland by Unanimous Decision (29-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Matt Wiman vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg

Rd.1 Its Main Card time and let's welcome back Mr. Wiman shall we? A quick clinch into the cage and a hard left from IVF. Stann says that Wiman is now a vegetarian which is interesting. A body kick from Flagg but he eats a right coming in. Back to the clinch they trade elbows and Matt loves a fight here. Except against TJ Grant of course. Body, body head from Isaac and a short elbow from Matt. A nice right elbow and Flagg comes in with a strong 1-2 after some separation. Wiman pops Isaac's ear, knee to the body and they are just trading elbows in a phone booth. Good right from Isaac as Matt misses. Knee to the body for Wiman and that right elbow again as we return to the clinch against the cage. Flagg tries for a takedown but fails and Wiman takes his back. Wiman transitions from the back to the armbar deftly. Then into a triangle as time expires. (10-9 Wiman)

Rd.2 Leg kick from Wiman to start and Matt hits a single leg but can't finish as Isaac lands an elbow. Look at ole Wiman with the UFC shorts still shunning sponsors. (MMAFO shakes head) An uppercut lands for Wiman and these guys are stand grappling in the clinch against the cage. Do people really enjoy watching IVF fight because we never have. A short elbow lands for Matt but an elbow for Isaac and now they let loose with some strikes. A knee to the body for Wiman and some uppercuts from Flagg. IVF fails at another takedown attempt allowing Wiman to take his back. 0-5 on takedowns for Flagg. Flagg escapes to the feet and a knee to the body followed by an elbow. Elbow from Flagg. Knee from Wiman and repeat. A final right hand ends the round from Wiman. (10-9 Wiman)

Rd.3 Matt needs to create some distance. We know he enjoys these clinch scraps but he could own IVF with a little distance. Flagg has zero defense. The final round begins as both combatants smile. A couple lefts from Matt who presses Flagg against the cage to unload some shoulder shots. Matt looks for an double leg but elbows from Flagg makes him rethink it. The ref separates them and a decent combo from Flagg. Wiman's corner is screaming for this to go to the mat with some foot sweeps and a high kick barely lands for Wiman. A left hook for Flagg and shockingly, we are back against the cage! Wiman takes the back for the 3rd time tonight and Flagg is peppering him with shots. Matt puts on the body lock with his legs and pressed against the cage, it will be difficult to complete the RNC. Matt lets go of the body lock pushing away from the cage now able to secure the choke. Softening punches from Wiman as he checks the clock. A grueling fight for both men but pretty cut and dried at the final bell as Flagg and Wiman jaw at each other. (10-9 Wiman
Fight Grade- C

Matt Wiman defeated Isaac Vallie-Flagg by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). Both men shake hands after the fight.

* Kelvin Gastelum is shown in the crowd and how about the come up on this kid. Damn if'n he hasn't show vast improvement, power, and brains in the cage. He's a Welterweight to be feared. Can he hang against Tyron Woodley at UFC 183, January 31st? Should be a good one.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Dustin Ortiz

Its time for Joe "B-Wan Kenobi" bitches! Get up! No nickname read by Bruce Buffer for "Jobama?" WTF!

Rd.1 The Flyweights are moving instantly and a leg kick and right hand land for Joe. A 1-2 and there is no chance we are going to be able to keep up with the action. A left for Ortiz and they actually take a moment to work on timing. A head kick for Joe then a left hand. Another head kick rocks Ortiz then a 1-2 for Benavidez. A body kick rings out for "Jobama." Joe fakes some shots and comes in with a 3 punch combination capitalized by the final right. Joe ducks his head dangerously but only eats a body kick,. A short clinch against the cage (no pun intended) and a solid leg kick. 15 body shots from Benavidez already and he plows through with a takedown of will not technique. The round ends solidly for "Rocky Baljoa." (10-9 Benavidez)

Rd.2 We can't type fast enough and a big head kick lands for Joe who thrashes forward with an onslaught of strikes. Two nice right hands for "Jozilla" and head kick and a right hand hurts Ortiz who looks glassy eyed. Joe misses with a wild overhand right and Ortiz shoots in for the double leg Dustin switches to the body lock and completes the takedown though Joe jumps back up. The right eye of Joe is bleeding and he nails a left on Dustin. An overhand right rocks Ortiz again but this tough ass kid keeps coming. A punch/leg catch drops Benavidez for a moment. Dustin is bleeding around the bridge of the right eye. A knee from Joe who trips and a clash of head doesn't seem to affect either guy. Body kick from Joe and he fakes a head kick going to the body instead. Left for Ortiz and a switch kick before they exchange shots in the clinch. The left wobbles Dustin but a left also catches Benavidez. Back elbow in the last seconds for Ortiz in a fun as hell fight! (10-9 Benavidez)

Rd.3 People really don't enjoy watching Flyweights fight? They are called idiots. Final round begins and Dustin shoots in for the takedown. A front headlock by Joe but we don't get the patented guillotine choke. Yet. Right hook moves Dustin off the mark and then a right uppercut stiffens up his head. Front headlock again and you can feel Joe wanting that guillotine. Ortiz shrugs him off and back to the feet we go. 103-39 on significant strikes in favor of "Jobama." Both men whiff on respective two punch combos when Joe vines the leg for the takedown but Ortiz won't stay down. On the ground after I blinked, and Joe has Dustin's leg trying to spin his hips into his opponent but can't finish. High knee from Dustin but he eats a right for it. Ortiz shoots again but stuffed yet again. Nice takedown by Dustin but Joseph won't stay down either. Body kick from Joe and a nasty inside leg kick to boot. 1-2 catches Ortiz but this kid don't stop. Joe misses a spinning heel kick and lands the final right hand in a great, just great fight!! (10-9 Benavidez) "Fight of the Night"
Fight Grade- A

Joseph Benavidez defeated Dustin Ortiz by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 3x) in a splendid war!

* Joseph shows a lot of respect for his opponent and the Flyweights steal "Fight of the Night" from the Strawweight ladies.

* MMAFO pulls into the lead in the nose picking game at 5-3. Still not good and lets hope we run up the score as we proceed with the proceedings as is our procedure.

Jared Rosholt vs. Alexey Oleinik

Time for our 2nd Heavyweight tilt of the night for which we are not expecting a whole lot. Still, we route against our pick and pull for the "Boa Constrictor." I mean, look at Jared's flag tattoo. What a d-bag.

Rd.1 Leg kick from Jared to start and the big boys trade some uppercuts. Crazy uppercuts now to the head and body as the men clinch up. Rosholt drags the Russian down hanging onto the neck to wear on his opponent. The American pushes Oleinik to the cage as they battle for wrist control. Big knee from Jared followed by more of those uppercuts in volume and Alex may be hurt. A vicious elbow scrapes Oleinik but the separate. A right uppercut from Alex and then a left hook wastes Rosholt who falls unconscious in the cage! Wow motherfuckers! It only takes one in the big boys division. Hell yeah, Oleinik walks away with the one punch KO! OPLOT baby.
Fight Grade- B+

Brad Pickett vs. Chico Camus

Rd.1 More great Flyweight action is up and the winner could easily get Joseph Benavidez next. Flying knee from Chico then a left from Brad. The Pikey shoots in but Camus leaps into the air to stop it. The hell was that? Left uppercut from Camus but Brad grabs him around the waist and completes the takedown. An elbow from top position but Chico lands a sneaky right elbow from guard. Brad is doing the standard body/head and moves into half guard. Camus moves him back into guard and Chico is bleeding around the right eye. Camus escapes to the feet and lands a 1-2. Jab from Pickett and two left hooks connect for Chico. 1-2 again for Brad but he fails on the takedown. They trade left hands but the 3rd left lands for Chico. Camus shoots for a single but Pickett scrambles out. A solid left for Camus who looks great at his new weight. (10-9 Camus)

Rd.2 The right eye is cut but not badly on Pickett but his nose may be broken. Nice jab from Camus and a 1-2 knocks Brad off balance. Uppercut and exit but back in Camus staggers taking a leg kick. Chico's hands are completely down and Brad has the takedown but Camus shows amazing balance to avoid the trip. An overhand right lands for Brad but then eats a right. Jumping knee misses for Pickett and an uppercut hits for Camus. Chico is really dancing out there and looking really improved. They trade a combination but Brad lands a left as Camus moves away. Pickett hits the double leg takedown but Chico uses the guillotine to posture out and stand again. Jab followed by a killer right for Camus. Big right for Pickett as he slips the hook and then a hard left. "One Punch" pressures Chico against the cage but can't do anything with it and time expires. Camus look vastly better than in previous outings. (10-9 Camus)

Rd.3 Kushman, who MMAFO has come to love on this season of the Ultimate Fighter, pleads with Camus for more straight rights between rounds. Pickett can't get the single leg and misses an elbow. A counter right for Brad and the right lands again as Brad seems to be getting the timing right. Leg kick from Brad then eventually a left/right lands solidly. Camus defends the takedown again with the guillotine which won't win him points but we find beautiful. Camus trips near the cage for a moment and Brad lands the calf kick. Two lefts for Camus rushing in and a teep to the guts of Pickett who's mouth is wide open. A minute left in a very close fight and a single left for Chico. Crowd is booing though we have no idea why as this is a good fight. Knee from Camus and a hook kick from Pickett. Camus lands two lefts as Brad calls him on but time expires. Very close fight. (10-9 Pickett)
Fight Grade- B-

Chico Camus defeated Brad Pickett by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 27-30).

* Hey, MMAFO picked Pickett to win but we scored it for Camus. Just being honest on the cards. Sorry to Brad.

* Hey favorite "NBK," Carlos Condit is shown in the crowd! Can't wait for this killer to return in 2015!

Bobby Green vs. Edson Barboza

Rd.1 Here we go with the Co- and a nice right lands for Bobbo early. Yup, we call him Bobbo. Green catches a kick and calls Ed back up to the feet. Two to the body and one to the head for Barboza. Green is stalking his foe and takes a leg kick. Bobbo's hands are very low and a brutal leg kick for Barboza. 1-2 hits but the 3rd misses for Ed. Head collision but both men seem fine and Ed is moving well staying away from Green's power. Leg kick again for Barboza and Bobbo needs to get to work. A sneaky left for Ed and then two lefts for Green finally. A left for Bob trying to clinch up and he has to find a way to cut off the Brazilian. (10-9 Barboza)

Rd.2 Head kick lands for Ed as Bob waves it off before taking another leg kick. An overhand right staggers Bobby and then a heel shot drops Green. Bobby recovers but then lands two solid right hands. Flying knee from Green and then a left hand though he misses with the follow up spinning right. Body kick from Eddy and a right again for Edson as Green calls him on. Leg kick bends Green over for a moment and Bobbo is running short of time. Flying knee to the body for Green and a nice leg kick of his own. Leg kick from Green as Ed seems content to let time expire in this round. (10-9 Barboza)

Rd.3 Final round, and Green checks the early leg kick. Ed lands a big right hand and Bobbo just doesn't seem to have any answers for the Brazilians movement. A left for Green but he just can't put more than one shot on Ed at a time. The right eye of Barboza has a stream of blood and another head kick lands for Ed. A left cocks the head of Green whose left eye has a smaller cut. 1-2 for Bobbo only to eat a left going away from Barboza. Green had Ed against the cage for but a moment and landed a left hand. Green is finally getting in some shots but its going to be too little too late as we journey into the final minute. They trade as the stupid as hell Texas crowd boo's for some unknown reason. Ed raises his hands in victory before the fight ends and Green doesn't like it though he calls his foe over and they hug in the center of the cage. (10-9 Barboza)
Fight Score- C-

Edson Barboza defeated Bobby Green by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 3x).

Frankie Edgar vs. Cub Swanson

Its time for the Main Event!

Rd.1-3 Technical Difficulties.

Rd.4 Edgar takes mount on Cub and brings a lot of punishment. Big, nasty elbows from Edgar. Swanson is swelling badly and Cub tries to fight back to the feet only to have "The Answer" out scramble him back into mount. Frankie lands 8 to Cub's 1 backlist. Swanson gives up the back for a moment but then we got right back into guard. Edgar moves into half guard, into mount and he unloads until Swanson retreats to his back and then into guard. Jesus what a fight! Cub fights for half guard and use the butterflies to get back up with 14 seconds left. Cub is a bloody mess and throws a violent uppercut that misses. (10-9 Edgar)

In the corner of Swanson, Cub is told he has to "knock this guy out to win!" The blue corner fighter is an absolute mess.

Rd.5 1,2,3, for Edgar with the uppercut on the end. Left for Frankie and coming forward, Cub lands a left hand but completes another takedown (7-10). From guard Edgar is landing some elbows before grabbing the head to rench his way into a guillotine. Swanson is rolling and shows a brilliant escape. Full mount and here come the strikes from Edgar. Frank tries for the head and arm choke but he can't step over and let's go. Into side control we go and knees come crashing into Cub's side. They grapple for a time and you have to feel a little bad for Swanson as he tries to fight on but Frankie is just one step ahead. Full mount for "The Answer" and a nasty elbow connects as Ed goes for the kill in the final seconds, secures the RNC, and brutally cranks the neck, twisting the body for the tapout! "Submission of the Night"

Frankie Edgar submitted Cub Swanson by RNC in the 5th and final round!
