So the news broke at the UFC 181 PPV when Joe Rogan introduced Phil Brooks, aka CM Punk as the newest signee to the Zuffa roster. (sigh)
Thusly, everyone has been wondering what MMAFO's opinion is on the matter. Well, here it is.
Don't care. Get it, don't care.
Yes its big news to bring new eyeballs to the UFC in a big way, but this is NOT like Brock Lesnar coming to the promotion. CM Punk has zero, fighting experience. ZERO. Lesnar was a 2000 amateur wrestling champion and though it was a single match, Brock had fought a tomato can in Japan for experience as well. And the pro wrestling fans all scream, "but Punk trains Jiu-Jitsu with bla, bla, bla."
Lots of people train lots of different martial arts and are not given this opportunity, and let's not mince words, this is a BIG opportunity. Punk is getting this opportunity because he is a former pro wrestler and nothing else.
Look, we have no problem with it. The UFC's profits were down 40% in 2014 and this isn't a horrible marketing strategy. But its little more than that. Brooks may be a good person and may train super duper hard, but this is shades of the ole Pride FC freak fights that we used to love so much so where's the problem? There is no problem as long as people take this for what it is, and don't confuse the incorrect notion that anyone can waltz into the Octagon cage and do the damn thing. They can't. And don't expect Phil to be a success.
It'll be a fun little experiment for the press and fans, but MMAFO isn't really interested. We quit watching pro wrestling when Bret "The Hitman" Hart retired. We just don't know the new kids. Best of luck Mr. Punk, but we'll be focusing on the the men and women who have dedicated their entire lives to this career, and could use the promotion for their hard work.
