UFC Fight Night 88 Results: Garbrandt & Stephens Look Strong

CODY_NOLOVE (Instagram)

Cody Garbrandt KO'd Thomas Almeida with Punches at 2:53 of the opening round.

"No Love" may need to change his nickname because he is going to get mad respect after he dismantled Thomas Almeida. Cody came out confident and landed a left hook that had Thomas shook early on. Garbrandt begins to land more and more and the always aggressive Almeida comes rushing forward only to eat a hard right hand. Cody continues with a brutal right cross that drops the Brazilian to the canvas. Garbrandt attacks with coffin nails and referee John McCarthy has to pull the American off from the assault! "KO of the Night"

A dominant career changing win for Cody Garbrandt and Team Alpha Male has another star player at Bantamweight. "No Love" was poised throughout and his power really took Almeida out of the fight before the knockout. Fellow winner tonight Brian Caraway would be a good stiff test for Cody next time to determine another title contender.

Jeremy Stephens defeated Renan Pegado by Unanimous Decision (29-28 3x).

"Barao" came out strong sticking and moving while Stephens was missing wildly while seeking a big bomb. Renan wandered into range in the 2nd and Jeremy made him pay with crushing uppercuts! Pegado's chin is no longer in question as he took some shots and though he staggered, "Barao" hung in the fight and did not become gun shy. Stephens pulled away in the final round as he found more accuracy with his right hand power punches. A really fun co-main event that's worth watching again and even in the loss Renan looks like a player at his new weight class. "Fight of the Night"

Jeremy Stephens remains a contender as always but he has lost to men ranked above him like Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira, and Cub Swanson so he's in a tough spot. Maybe he can be pitted against Ricardo Lamas for a showcase.

Rick Story defeated Tarec Saffiedine by Unanimous Decision (29-28 2x, 30-27).

"The Horror" Story looked crisp and prepared after the long layoff assaulting Saffiedine with body shot after body shot and never allowing Tarec to get his kickboxing established. Rick kept Tarec backing up and broke him down with unforgiving pressure.

Chris Camozzi defeated Vitor Miranda via Unanimous Decision (30-27 3x).

Called it. Camozzi is just a blue collar worker who is smart and effective. Chris really excelled when he had Vitor grounded and busted him open with vicious strong elbows. Camozzi won at every position and has now run off 3 wins in a row.

Lorenz Larkin defeated Jorge Masvidal by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

The "Monsoon" landed a little bit of everything and Jorge continued to react with large smiles each time to inform the judges he was hit. Not smart but its something Masvidal has done his entire career. A nasty eye poke from Larkin halted the action for a time but Lorenz was honestly apologetic and upset at himself. Larkin continued to pull away as the fight progressed while "Gamebred" tried to laugh off the assaults which never works. Lorenz was also very proud (as a striker) of his last moment takedown which was amusing.

Paul Felder defeated Joshua Burkman via Unanimous Decision (29-28 3x).

The "Irish Dragon" squeaked past the veteran in a head scratching performance. Felder hooked up with Frankie Edgar's camp for this fight and just seemed to be waiting most of the time and not engaging with the aggression he used to show. Paul was able to find his range late and bust up Josh's nose to just do enough to win. Not a good look from Felder and we all expected more.

Sara McMann defeated Jessica Eye by Unanimous Decision (30-27 3x).

Geez, that was as awful as many thought it would be. Eye was so afraid of McMann's takedowns that she was unable to use her boxing. Sara eventually got her takedowns in a very boring uneventful bout.

Abel Trujillo defeated Jordan Rinaldi via Unanimous Decision (29-28 3x).

Yeah the woman beater won but didn't do anything of note against the last second debuting Rinaldi.

Jake Collier TKO'd Alberto Pereira via Spinning Body Kick at 1:06 of the 2nd round.

“Uda” got the clinch and landed a knee early. Another clinch knee from Pereira and Collier reacted as though it broke his nose. Jake rallied back even though his nostrils are pouring blood to slow things down and stay in the fight. Jake earns a takedown without doing much but Albert reverses to Collier’s back and then ends the round safely atop. (10-9 Pereira)

We start the 2nd, and Albert clinches right up but he is the one eating the most punches. Collier is landing knees himself, a volley of punches, and caps it off with a spinning kick to the body which folds up Pereira. A true show of heart in the comeback win for Jake!

The Doctor immediately comes in and asks Jake, “How’s the nose?”

“It’s fucked.” is Collier’s short reply. :)

Erik Koch submitted Shane Campbell by Rear Naked Choke at 3:02 of the 2nd round.

Good to see Koch back to his unnatural orange after his pale weigh-in. Erik is winning the stand up game when Shane decides to change things to grappling against he fence. Koch gets a late takedown and takes the back as the round expires. (10-9 Koch)

In the 2nd round, and Erik runs immediately into an elbow that rattles him. Koch smartly hits a takedown and tries to secure a head and arm triangle choke. Nothing doing but the Roufusport fighter works onto the back and secures the tight RNC for the tap! "Submission of the Night"

Bryan Caraway Upset Aljamain Sterling by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

This should easily help explain what a doucebag Brian Caraway is. This moron entered the arena to Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push it.” Are you fucking kidding me? What a goddamn fool.

OOPS, DID BRY GET CUT OUT?
Aljamain went for a single-leg takedown and then quickly spun around to take Bryan’s back. A neck crank failed but Sterling held on to the body triangle continuing to dominate the position and looking for m.  Sterling then put a full nelson on Caraway from back control which MMAFO has never seen in modern MMA. “Mr. Tate” did not seem to enjoy it by time expired for the opening round. (10-9 Sterling)

The 2nd began, with Sterling looking for a single leg but falling into a guillotine choke. “Al-Jo” escaped but Bryan is hitting the looping right hand even if he eats some leg kicks. Aljamain is not looking comfortable with his stand up and missing badly. Caraway connects on a takedown spinning for the back but eventually moves back in front settling on half guard. Bry rides out the round in control. (10-9 Caraway)

The final stanza begins, with “Al-Jo” asking for a glove touch and getting a nod of “no” from Bryan. Caraway eats a few shots but gets a takedown. The men stall out against he fence but Sterling gets back up only to be taken down again. Al gets a reverse head and arm triangle for a moment but Bry slips out. Caraway takes the back as the men stand and he rides out the round for the win.
(10-9 Caraway)

Caraway had better cardio and control and really reached down deeper to gut out the win against the guy who was talking a lot of shit. Hate him all you want he won that fight on determination if nothing else. A little too much cocky for Aljamain. Sterling had some flash in his stand-up but the attempts were far off the mark and did nothing.

Adam Milstead TKO'd Chris de la Rocha via Punches at 4:01 of the 2nd round.

A bit of an interesting stoppage here. These guys were “bombing on common sense.” De la Rocha was a bloody mess and a giant hematoma had formed around the left eye via elbows from Milstead. It was gruesome and though and Adam was battering Chris (who was retreating) he was still cognizant. The referee halted the action likely because of all the blood and the power all Heavyweights deliver. A questionable move by the ref but still a surprisingly entertaining bout from the big boys.

“The Prototype” is coming into his prime at 28 and it will be interesting to see how he develops because he does have some strong boxing skills.

Say what you will about de la Rocha as a fighter, the guy had a chin tonight! Dude was getting lit up for the most part, but he got his licks in even through the carnage.

6-6 on the picks which is obviously not good even though it was a hard card to predict. "Uda" and Tarec really let us down but Camozzi continues to be a solid underdog. And "Al-Jo," what the hell happened homie?
