"The Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko walked to the cage in St. Petersburg, Russia confident that the opponent was a mere stepping stone to the UFC. Then the fight happened. Fedor opened with an onslaught of combinations but Fabio blocked many and survived the melee. Emelianenko backed away to take some deep breaths and a left hand dropped the Russian hero to the canvas. Maldonado attacked reigning down blows and it looked as if the bout was about to be stopped but somehow Fedor survived.
Things came back to reality in the 2nd, when Fedor attacked with a more calm demeanor with his punches, before finding a home for multiple knees to the gut which seemed to take the breath from Maldonado. Fedor even landed a flying knee and some hard leg kicks.
The final round saw Emelianenko moving in for combinations, and then safely circling away to survive at the very least.
Both men were badly exhausted at the end of the fight and mutually busted up from strikes. The cards were read but only a single judge ruled the opening round 10-8 for Maldonado and the bout was ruled a Majority Decision for Emelianenko. It all comes down to how you scored the initial round but Fedor wins and with such an underwhelming performance, one has to wonder if he will still sign with the UFC.
MMAFO loves, LOVES, Fedor and we hope he retires. Emelianenko is looking quite slow when he tries to escape after combinations and the cardio was terrible. The chin has taken some big punches and the legend has nothing to prove to anyone! You got your win in the homeland and its a fitting place to hang em up. Much love to the real GOAT but there is no reason to continue on in the dangerous world of Heavyweights. Especially in the UFC.
