UFC on Fox 23 Results: Shevchenko & Masvidal Elevate In Mile High

Valentina Shevchenko submitted Julianna Pena via Armbar at 4:29 of the 2nd round.

"The Kyrgyzstani Killer" fought Pena at her own game taking her down twice in the opening round with textbook foot sweeps and controlled the 1st 5 minutes. In the 2nd, Julianna was pressing hard in the clinch and evened the game a bit with a couple of takedowns herself. Pena is trying to G&P but Schevchenko throws up her legs searching for the armbar. "Resting Bitch Face" adjusted maneuvering across Valentina's body but the "Bullet" rolls with her securing the hold and eliciting the tapout!

An impressive showing for the striker who obviously has a grappling game in her back pocket. Valentina then went face to face with champ Amanda Nunes challenging her for a rematch! Schevchenko has now gone 7-1 with her lone loss coming to the "Lioness" (via decision) last March.

Juliana goes back into the que and if ever there was a time for Pena to face Ronda Rousey it is now. Both are coming off losses and their hate for each other is palatable.

Jorge Masvidal TKO'd Donald Cerrone at 1:00 of the 2nd round.

Both men came to fight exchanging strikes with ill intent but the end of the round was where the craziness began as a barrage from Masvidal rocked and dropped Cerrone with referee Herb Dean stepping in before the bell (!) to wave off the contest. Inexplicably, Herb Dean changed his mind deciding not to call off the fight though a fighter cannot be saved by the bell, and Donald was obviously unaware of where or who he was. Coach Greg Jackson tried to revive his fighter between rounds but Cerrone seemed completely on autopilot.

Controversial refereeing aside, the action continued in the next round but Jorge was coming on with controlled aggression. Another right hand floors Donald who valiantly stands but then an onslaught of body punches from Masvidal forced referee Herb Dean to stop the contest for the 2nd time.

A major Upset in "Cowboy's" hometown and now "Gamebred" is poised for bigger and better things at Welterweight while Cerrone goes back to the drawing board once again, continuing to be unable to win the "big" ones.

How in the fuck was Herb Dean allowed to step in to stop the bout before the bell at the end of the 1st round, and yet still permit the fight to continue into the 2nd round? This was a highly egregious error on the veteran referee's resume and some shade should be thrown on the corner of Cerrone for letting their badly wounded and likely concussed fighter continue on to endure even more damage. Bad calls all over this one.

Francis Ngannou TKO'd Andrei Arlovski at 1:32 of the very 1st round.

Well, this fight went exactly as expected. Ngannou landed a counter right hand that dropped Arlovski and then Francis put in the coffin nails. It was ugly and the UFC must not like Andrei very much to do this to him. No speculating about the "Pit Bull's" chin as though punches would have ruined any man.

France's "Predator" has now won 9 in a row and is officially a force to be reckoned with at Heavyweight.

That's 4 losses in a row for Arlovski and retirement is going to be the topic of conversation for the 37 year old yet again. If Andrei doesn't get cut from the promotion since the heavy roster is so shallow, he has been (T)KO'd 10 times in his career and his future health should be taken into account.

Jason Knight tapped Alex Caceres via Rear-Naked Choke at 4:21 of the 2nd round.

"Country Diaz" is as nasty as he is mean. Knight was getting out struck by "Bruce Leeroy" early on, but the shots Jason was landing were slowing beginning to take their toll on Caceres. Jason took Alex down and instantly secured a body triangle before wrenching the neck of Caceres and forcing the end. Could be called a neck crank (much like Tito Ortiz versus Chael Sonnen last weekend) but at any rate Knight is fun to watch and he called out "The Korean Superboy" Doo Ho Choi for what would be an intense and thrilling contest.

Caceres is now 7-8-1in the UFC but he's an exciting fighter and though he came across as a bit of a douche bag during his TUF time, he's actually a pretty good and intelligent dude. MMAFO wishes him the best of luck and know that you have won our hearts fella. :)

Sam Alvey defeated Nate Marquardt by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) in a predictably tedious pairing.

A lot of clinch work and a few bit punches won the day for "Smile'N" Sam. The guy is so cringey on the mic that it is painful while Marquardt is now 3-6 since his return to the UFC. Tick, tock sir.

Raphael Assuncao defeated Aljamain Sterling by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

"Aljo" just has to get his striking game in order. Sterling had a real shot to win this as Assuncao seemed a bit listless and didn't score nearly as often as he normally does, but he couldn't get Raph to the mat and rightly lost a narrow decision.

The "Funkmaster" has now lost 2 in a row but the potential is high as long as Coach Ray Longo can make him a true boxer.

The Brazilian is now back in the win column and poised to make a run for the belt if he can string a few wins together.

Li Jingliang KO'd Bobby Nash at 4:45 of the 2nd round.

"Jing-a-ling-a-ling" continues to be a fun cat to watch and really showed some heart getting rocked multiple times in this fight before storming back in the 2nd to put a game Nash down. Fun stuff and should be viewed by all.

Jordan Johnson defeated Luis Henrique da Silva by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

JJ has wrestling for days and da Silva does not. End of story.

Eric Spicely submitted Alessio Di Chirico via Triangle Choke at 2:14 of the 1st round.

Spicely don't fuck around. Eric knows who he is and just searches for the takedown to practice his Jiu-Jitsu. "Spice Rack's" jitz is > Chirico's striking.

Marcos Rogerio de Lima TKO'd Jeremy Kimball at 2:27 of the 1st round.

Alexandre Pantoja defeated Eric Shelton by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

Jason Gonzalez submitted J.C. Cottrell via D'arce Choke at 3:54 of the initial round.

9-3 in the picks game.
