UFC 209 Results: Night Of The Underdogs!

Tyron Woodley defeated Stephen Thompson by Majority Decision (48-47, 47-47, 48-47) in one of the worst title bouts of all time.

This was an absolute snorefest of garbage. Neither man wanted to commit and very little strikes were thrown. Thompson followed Woodley around the cage tapping him with occasional punches and kicks while Tyron got a takedown in the 2nd and landed some G&P. Then more nothing as the crowd reigned down boo’s and even began chanting, “fight, fight,” bored to tears with the inactivity. It seemed to everyone including Woodley’s Roufusport corner who told their fighter he had to finish the fight to retain his belt, that Thompson was up 3-1 going into the final round. Finally, Tyron exploded with an overhand right that had Steph crashing to the canvas and though the champ followed up with an attack, “Wonderboy” survived ending the tepid affair with what seemed like an obvious score of 48-47 for Thompson.

The judges saw the bout for “T-Wood” much to the dismay of the crowd but when neither guy is willing to give their all for a belt, its hard to get upset at a bad decision. Everyone in attendance was a loser this night. Close or not, nobody, and we mean nobody, wants to see another round between these two timid groundhogs.

David Teymur Upset Landon Vannata by Unanimous Decision (30-27 3x).

Teymur clearly won this contest but c’mon, you can’t give “Lando” a single round? Anywho, David had the answers as he worked combinations in a steady stream after Landon’s continuous spinning flippy shit that was pretty, but allowed him to be easily countered and out-scored. The cartwheel kick and handstand kick were things of beauty from “Lando,” but the cat has to learn how to use a jab and stop showing how tough he is as he takes unnecessary damage which causes losses on the scoreboard. "Fight of the Night"

The Swede has now won 6 in a row and opened MMAFO’s eyes as we totally overlooked him. Our bad. Well done sir.

Kelly's knee ^
Daniel Kelly Upset Rashad Evans by Split Decision(29-28, 28-29, 29-28) and may have become a star tonight.

The old, slow, and broken down Kelly showed true pluck as he slogged through, showing much improved boxing and just heart for days. Ya just gotta love the dad vibe you get from Daniel as the underdog has now gone 6-1 in the UFC! Feels all around.

Rashad, Rashad, Rashad. “Suga” just has not been himself since he was KO’d by Lyoto Machida back in 2009. You can visibly see he’s afraid to get punched. The guy simply cannot pull the damn trigger, and when he finally did, Kelly answered him by not going away while turning up the volume on his strikes. Evans was surprised at the decision but nobody else was. Rashad has now lost 3 in a row and is a shell of his former self. If he can’t commit to some offense, what are we doing here? MMAFO called it a long time ago that Evans should just stay in the both where he is safe and not in constant fear of getting hit.

Cynthia Calvillo submitted Amanda Cooper via Rear Naked Choke 3:19 into the opening round for a successful debut.

One of the smoothest transitions seen as Calvillo rolled an anaconda choke into a RNC hearkening the arrival of the newest Team Alpha Female.

Alistair Overeem KO’d Mark Hunt via Knees at 1:44 of the last round.

Dammit. Just dammit. “Ubereem” was landing those crushing knees all night and when he brought a pair up to Hunt’s dome, the Samoan crashed face 1st to the canvas. After all that has happened to Mark recently, it was a sad loss. "KO of the Night"

Credit to “The Demolition Man” who fought smart and did so after being hospitalized twice, for food poisoning!

Marcin Tybura TKO’d Luis Henrique at 3:46 of the final round.

Darren Elkins TKO’d Mirsad Bektic at 3:19 of the 3rd round to complete one of the best MMA comebacks of all time!

“The Damage,” (which you will find tattoo’d on his chest) took a savage beating at the hands of the highly favored Bektic. Mirsad took Darren down early and opened a massive gash on his head which poured blood like a faucet. Elkins was trapped in a crucifix position as Bektic battered him for a near finish and even an official rare 10-7 score from judge Chris Nelson.

The ferocious beating continued through to the final round until Elkins rose landing a right to the temple, one to the jaw, and a right head kick that disconnected Bektic from reality!

A craaaaazy comeback from a lifelong journeyman and an amazing story.

Iuri Alcantara tapped Luke Sanders via the rare Kneebar at 3:13 of the 2nd round.

Iuri was getting owned when he rolled into the kneebar which is a MMAFO favorite and just a beautiful instant tap. An early contender for sub of the year! “Submission of the Night”
  • Sanders needs to gain a bit of control. Luke looked like he was going to throw an illegal knee, paused and then unloaded it causing a point deduction (which was perfect reffing by Mark Goddard). Sanders also struck low and perhaps this guy needs to learn some self control in the cage.
Mark Godbeer defeated Daniel Spitz by Unanimous Decision (30-27 3x).

Spitz has an obvious need for some endurance training but he may just be too green for the UFC at this time. Mark is a decent big heavy who won’t make any noise in the big time.

Tyson Pedro TKO’d Paul Craig by TKO with Elbows at 4:10 of the 1st round.

Albert Morales defeated Andre Soukhamthath by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

7-4 on the picks.
