UFC 221 Rockhold vs. Romero: (Turrible) Fight Card, Half-Assed Musings + Odds

February 10, 2018
Perth Arena
Perth, Western Australia

The UFC actually expects you, the MMA fan, to purchase this PPV for $64.99! What a fucking joke. Anyone who buys this event is only helping to encourage the UFC to put on shit cards that they expect you to eat with a smile. UFC 221 wouldn't even be a serviceable Fight Pass card and these greedy cunts want you to put your hard earned money down for garbage. Have you ever heard of VIP Box or Batman Stream

Main Card on Pay-Per-View (9pm/CT):

Interim Middleweight Title Fight
Luke Rockhold (16-3) -140 vs. Yoel Romero (12-2) +130

The debacle that is the Middleweight division is hilarious. Michael Bisping shocks the world taking out Rockhold, then the UFC gives him ancient and undeserving Dan Henderson (the UFC's doing not Mike's, btw), and then we all wait for over a year as the UFC negotiates with mercurial Georges St. Pierre, who defeats Bisping in his comeback for the title, and then promptly leaves the sport (yet again) and the belt falls to Interim holder Robert Whittaker. "Bobby Knuckles" then injures his knee which pulls him from this event in his home country and ruins an already weak ass PPV. Now the UFC is making yet another Interim title just to try and increase sales for a doomed event. Its a fucking hilarious tragedy that the UFC has brought upon themselves and well deserved!

And so, the fight we have before us is "Lovely" Luke versus the proven cheater who lost to the real champ. What a shit show.

The fight itself should be really fun with two ultra-athletic monsters colliding in the Octagon. Luke looked very rusty against David Branch and had to wake up to gain the victory. Lesson learned and Rockhold will come in much sharper this time around and he's flat out pissed at how the division has devolved since his humiliating loss to G.O.A.T. Bisping. A lot has been made of Luke ditching AKA and moving to train with striking specialist Henri Hooft. This is not a betrayal but a smart move for a prime fighter who saw the opportunity to evolve his game. Rockhold is also basically a Light Heavy fighting at Middle using his long legs for effective kicking and staying behind a steady jab.

The gravel-voiced Cuban is either a genetic miracle, or a juiced past the fucking gills cheater that can deny the hands of time. This cat is supposedly 40 years old covered in cartoon superhero muscles. That being implied, Romero is condensed power that can explode with devastating effects at any time. We also know how decorated a wrestler he is and that he will do anything outside of the rules to try and hide his horrendous cardio issues.

It's an intriguing for sure but shouldn't be for a fake belt. Anywho,
Rockhold can do everything Whittaker did to defeat Romero last July and even more. Lukas has great striking as well, but he's slicker and has the submissions should he gain top position. Fans will also likely be surprised when they see the size advantage the model has. Luke pushes the pace here and Romero can't spill enough ice in the cage to catch his breath as Rockhold chokes him unconscious.

WINNER-Luke Rockhold by Rd.4 Submission

Mark Hunt (13-11-1, 1) +140 vs. Curtis Blaydes (9-1) -160

Oh Marcus, what can be done about the "Super Samoan?" Hunt has been at war with the UFC for the last couple of years and desperately wants to end his contract and seek other avenues. The cunty business practises of the UFC won't allow that as they use every excuse (concussion bullshit) and dirty underhanded practice (Brock Lesnar doesn't need the established 4-month of USADA testing because $$$) to screw "Hunto" into insanity. Just let the nice fucking guy go already and stop being such money hungry twats. There, MMAFO soapbox over.

"Razor" Blaydes has come into his own and is perhaps the best prospect currently in the Heavyweight division. Curtis' wrestling is the best in the class and he's using his massive size to help wrangle opponents for his developing striking. MMAFO would like Blaydes to move from Elevation Fight Team to a more major fight camp to take the next step in his career, but we digress.

"Hunto" has good takedown defense and some crazy ass power in his hands, but he's also now forty-fucking-three, his legendary chin has cracked 4 times in recent MMA, and does Mark even care enough to train properly for a promotion he just wants freedom from? Hard to say but one thing we know is that Curtis can and will stick close to Mark stifling his punching power and at least a couple of takedowns to punish Hunt on the ground and keep control of things.

WINNER-Curtis Blaydes by Decision

Tai Tuivasa (6-0) -310 vs. Cyril Asker (9-3) +255

It's a big boy bang bang with "Bam Bam" and a French Bushido.

Tuivasa can surprise you with his athletic ability though it will take his endurance immediately. Still, Tai has power and unleash when least expected.

The "Silverback" wants, needs, is desperate for the takedown and nothing else.

Time for Tuivasa to get another big win in front of the homeland as the UFC continues to try and make him the new Mark Hunt.

WINNER-Tai Tuivasa by Rd.1 TKO

Jake Matthews (12-3) +140 vs. Li Jingliang (14-4) -160

"The Celtic Kid"is a very young wrestler who has terrible boxing.

The Chinese fighter is building momentum having won 4 in a row, 3 of which were finishes. "Jing-a-ling-a-ling" is an effective striker even though he doesn't have much in the way of defense.

Matthews is just too slow and has but a single aspect of MMA to offer. Li has many more tools and creativity to win at the very least a couple of rounds. This is not a PPV worthy fight however

WINNER-Li Jingliang by Decision

Tyson Pedro (6-1) -290 vs. Saparbek Safarov (8-1) +245

Could not give less of a shit here. This is actually on a PPV! WTF!

WINNER-Tyson Pedro by something

Prelims on FS1 (7pm/CT):

Damien Brown (17-11) +115 vs. Dong Hyun Kim (15-8-3) -135

The "Maestro" and "Diablo" are going to go to war https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6c8X_s1h9Y! This is going to be fun as theses guys are just going to brawl. Just get some popcorn and enjoy.

WINNER-Dong Hyun Kim by Decision

Rob Wilkinson (11-1) +315 vs. Israel Adesanya (11-0) -380

This is one of those "the UFC is obviously booking this bout to favor ___" type of fight. Wilkinson is coming off a TKO loss and they are gifting him in against the former Glory kickboxer. The "Broken Native" went 50-5-2 in pro kickboxing and 6-1 in pro boxing before focusing on the MMA's. "The Stylebender" is exciting with highlight reel knockout power and "Izzy" is going to fuck Robby up!

WINNER-Israel Adesanya by Rd.1 TKO

Alex Volkanovski (16-1) -220 vs. Jeremy Kennedy (11-0) +180

"The Great" Aussie has won 13 (!) in a row based upon a slow building steady attack of fists that sneaks up on you. Alex hasn't been given a lot of shine but he's a true prospect.

The undefeated Mr. Kennedy doesn't awe anyone either, but he is a solid striker who knows he can go to his staunch wrestling game is pushed.

This is a difficult and interesting matchup. The only real difference between the two is Jeremy's grappling skills. The problem, is that Kennedy can't vary his attack and rather picks a skill, works it, and then changes to another when necessary. He has yet to be able to put everything together fluidly. Even so, and MMAFO knows we are looking to lose big here, we like Mr. Kennedy to win. Why? Because we believe Volkanovski is going to get the better of Kennedy early and often, which will force Jeremy into his grappling game which he will zero in on, and use to thwart Alex's offense and earn two rounds.

Upset Pick WINNER-Jeremy Kennedy by Decision

Jussier da Silva (20-5) -125 vs. Ben Nguyen(17-6) +105

Internet sensation Ben "10" has become a popular Flyweight going 4-1 in the UFC and threatening to become a contender at 125s. Now is his chance to really prove he belongs coming off a big win over Tim Elliott and facing perennial contender "Formiga" who has been one of the best in the world for the last 5 years! What Ben is gonna wanna do, is go crazy with his varied striking and go-for-broke early slangin' caution to the curb.

"Formiga" is the gatekeeper to the title but what "10" doesn't want to do, is engage the Brazilian on the ground. Nguyen can scramble well but he's out of his depth against the vaunted Jiu-Jitsu of da Silva. Jussier's kickboxing isn't stellar but there is technical prowess there and enough to not get railed upon.

Nguyen is gonna need to win this early and we just don't see it. "Formiga" is damn good everywhere and when pushed back by "10's" striking attack, he's going to find solace on the ground and if'n he doesn't solicit the tap, he'll win on points.

Prelims on UFC Fight Pass) (5:30pm/CT):

Ross Pearson (19-14) -150 vs. Mizuto Hirota (18-8-2) +130

The beloved Ross "The Boss" Pearson has had a tumultuous career and the many wars have aged the man beyond his 33 years. Ross also cuts badly from a stiff wind and he's always been one of the slowest Lightweights, but, BUT, MMAFO loves us some "Real Deal!" Pearson is a good person outside the cage and has a huge heart within. Ross can vary his attack with boxing and kicks and damned if the guy can't take a ton of damage and keep trucking. Time is ticking though, and Pearson has lost 5 of his last 6 including a knockout loss last June.

"Pugnus" is not a good fighter. Hirota was bounced from the UFC in '13 after going 0-2. Miz then went to work at home in the DEEP promotion (where he was a champ) only to return to the American promotion to take his record to 1-1-1 in his 2nd tour (though only competing once a year for the last three years).

Pearson isn't going to change his style. Ross is going to slog forward throwing slow kicks and nice punches just mixed enough to gain confidence. Then the Brit will wade in and get touched up bringing the blood and bruises. Hirota should slowly take over and though we hate to say it, we feel like Pearson's time has passed.

Upset Pick WINNER-Mizuto Hirota by Decision

Teruto Ishihara (10-4-2) +140 vs. Jose Quinonez (6-2) -160

"Yashabo" has gone 3-2-1 in the UFC, and the Team Alpha Male fighter is exciting as hell, but, the guy doesn't fight smart fights and he's making a new weight cut going down 10 lbs. to 135s.

"El Teco" has found his groove in the UFC winning his last 3 backed by some nice kick attacks and decent boxing. Jose also hits a lot of takedowns just to keep you honest.

How can anybody rely on the unreliable Ishihara at this point? He's a fun novelty but he's not going to make the right decisions, and his affinity to fade in fights isn't going to help him after an even tougher weight cut. It's about time to bail on the Teruto experiment.

WINNER-Jose Quinonez by Decision

Luke Jumeau (12-4) +135 vs. Daichi Abe (6-0) -155

Luke is the local New Zealander and he is a snoozer to watch. This bout could be a real snoozer and nobody is interested in Jumeau.

Abraham is undefeated and made a successful UFC debut last September countering his way to a win against Hyun Gyu Lim. Daichi is coming into his physical prime but has only been a professional in MMA for two years. He should be able to win at least two rounds in a bout not worth writing about.

WINNER-Daichi Abe by Decision
