UFC Fight Night 139 The Korean Zombie vs. Rodriguez: Fight Card, Half-Assed Musings + Odds

November 10, 2018
Pepsi Center
Denver, Colorado

Well, MMAFO was hyped as shit for last weeks event, then we ran out of time and thus put out some mediocre predictions. Apologies but this is about as unprofessional of a MMA blog as you are gonna find. Be that as it may, we're back again talking out our asses ad welcoming back the oft injured "Korean Zombie" and mercurial Yair. "Cowboy" is here to disappoint as well and he'll face a moronic "Platinum" Perry who can't understand why he is labeled a racist time and time again. Here we goo.

Main Card on FS1 (9pm/CT):

Chan Sung Jung (14-4) -130 vs. Yair Rodriguez (11-2) +110

"The Korean Zombie" lost two years of his career to South Korea's mandatory military service, but successfully returned in February of '17 knocking out Dennis Bermudez in a single round only to injure his knee and be forced to hit the bench for 21 months. The beloved fan favorite is as fun as they come hitting motherfucking twisters on fools and taking big chances when he can just swallow foes on the ground.

Yair frustrated the UFC brass by continually turning down fights simply because he wanted to work on his craft. How dare he (/s). The 26 year old is exciting as well throwing unorthodox strikes from crazy angles. "Pantera" has struggled with this style when old man Frankie Edgar brought him back down to earth with an old school shit kicking, but he's a young work in progress with upside to spare.

Ooh, this is gonna be a fun one! Both of these guys are some of the most exciting cats on the roster taking those big chances that entertain us so much. The durability check easily goes to Rodriguez but putting himself in precarious situations as he often does, could see him out-grappled yet again by a ground master. The savvy of Sung Jung should allow him to capitalize on a mistake and find
a limb to munch on.

WINNER-Chan Sung Jung by Rd.2 Submission

Donald Cerrone (33-11,1) +170 vs. Mike Perry (12-3) -200

Tick tock "Cowboy." Tick tock. Things have gone off a cliff for Cerrone as he has lost 4 of his last 5 (goddamn!), is now 35 years of age, and didn't work at all with longtime camp Jackson-Wink for this fight. It was controversy city as Mike Winkeljohn sided with the younger Mike Perry while Greg Jackson is nonexistent at the school. Granted, Don spends most of his time at the BMF Ranch but he did spend time at the New Mexico facility where he has trained for 11 plus years and getting dumped for Perry had to hurt. Sad really. Still, Cerrone is a talented kickboxer and a great grappler if he can avoid getting hurt which has not been the case as of late.

Where does one begin with the idiot "Platinum" Perry? The guy just doesn't get it. He uses the "N-word" because he is 1% black. Okay. He dresses as a native American and does a hack impression and wonders why he is labeled a racist. I don't believe he is really racist. He's just too dumb to understand the world we live in. We're talking about a guy with a tat over his eye who cannot shut his mouth whether it's against fighters, or fans at the open workouts. Idiot. Anywho, he hits really, really hard, and can take a shot. That's about all but he does both pretty well.

So, can "Cowboy" weather the early power punches and ground Perry where he'll be out smarted? Doubtful and that's painful to admit. Donald is fading fast and facing a granite handed and granite chinned youth is the exact recipe for disaster for Cerrone. This is gonna be sad and we don't really wanna watch.

Oh, and Winkeljohn, fuck you.

WINNER-Mike Perry by Rd.1 TKO

#8 Raquel Pennington (9-7) +150 vs. Germaine de Randamie (7-3) -170

"Rocky" did about as well as we expected when she was destroyed by Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes in May. Pennington's skills are actually overrated and she's really just a brawler without power.

"The Iron Lady" won the inaugural women's Featherweight Championship in a controversial win over Holly Holm, and then proceeded to head to the hills, refusing to fight, and then having the belt taken away without ever defending it. At least, that is how the uneducated fans saw things. In truth, Germaine was honest with the UFC up front that her jaunt to 145 was a one time thing and that she was planning a return to 135s after the opportunity at gold. Fair enough but then she was also inured and that didn't help her public persona as the fickle MMA fans labeled her a "coward" claiming she was running from Cristiane Justino. First of all, the entire MMAFO staff would run from "Cyborg" and you're a liar if you claim you would not. Secondly, people need to stop listening to Dana White's rhetoric. The guy is a habitual liar. De Randamie was up front with the UFC and after the fact, they spun the narrative just to make her look bad because they didn't get their way. It needs to be understood that the UFC has a long, long track record of not giving a fucking shit about their fighters and using them as they see fit. Just know if Dana White says something, the reality is likely the opposite. With our soapbox over, De Randamie is actually a nice person with her values properly aligned.

Oh, by the way, there is a fight. In her UFC career, Germaine has gone 4-1 winning a title and only losing to bad ass "Lioness". The Dutchlady is a durable kickboxer who doesn't have a ton of wear on her body because she does fight infrequently which is her prerogative.

So, we'll have a brawl here and a lot of people booing de Randamie and chanting "U-S-A" like the xenophobes they are. But surprise, Germaine is gonna touch up Raquel with her superior technical skills and take home a nice win on the cards.

WINNER-Germaine de Randamie by Decision

Joseph Benavidez versus Ray Borg is Cancelled!

Look, this has gotten way out of hand. Borg has pulled out of fights late no less than times (!) in his UFC career and we're not even counting the bus incident which wasn't his fault. This guy cannot make weight and with the UFC soon to dissolve the Flyweight division, just cut this guy and move on already.

Maycee Barber (4-0) -400 vs. Hannah Cifers (8-2) +325

It's a double debut for the women's Strawweight division!

"The Future" is only 20 years old and coming off a win on the Tuesday Night Contender Series to get her shot. Inexperience is obviously an issue but Maycee's a natural athlete and relentless with her pressure.

"Shockwave" is coming in on short notice and is short at 5'1" which is crazy small. She'll put up an effort if things are in the clinch but other than there she'll get dominated.

WINNER-Maycee Barber by Decision

Luis Pena (5-0) -185 vs. Michael Trizano (8-0) +160

This is all about "Violent Bob Ross." The red afro of Pena and funny nickname is the selling point to fans, but the guy can grapple his ass off and has some pop in his fists. He gets it done.

WINNER-Luis Pena by Rd.2 Submission

Ashley Yoder (5-4) -160 vs. Amanda Cooper (4-4) +140

So Ashley, you doing anything after the fight or, oops, sorry, we gotta stay professional here. "The Spider Monkey" is a pretty lady but she has lost 3 in a row. The girl has grit and is actually pretty well rounded but she just doesn't have any power.

"ABC" is 2-3 in the promotion and just isn't very good. She'll make a mistake at some point to get subbed or at least spend her evening on the canvas unable to get back to her feet.

WINNER-Ashley Yoder by Decision

Chas Skelly (17-2) -105 vs. Bobby Moffett (12-3) -115

Where ya been Chas? Chas has been gone for a year with injuries and is coming off a loss to Jason Knight which does not look particularly good in hindsight. Chas is as his nickname says, a "Skrapper" but he does have some wrestling skills though he's a bit loose with the art. Also, we just like saying Chas. It's a funny name right Turd?

"The Wolfman" has graduated from the Tuesday Night Contender Series and fights out of the MMA Lab where he excels at grappling.

When two grapplers go at it, a kickboxing fight tends to break out. If that's the case we favor Chas but we've got one of those feelings where Chas is going to get tapped for the 1st time in his career to Moffett. Take our hunches with a grain of salt.

WINNER-Bobby Moffett by Rd.3 Submission

Beneil Dariush (14-4-1) -145 vs. Thiago Moises (10-2) +130

MMAFO thought Dariush was an eventual contender back in '16 (we're not always right) and then the division said no sir. The King's MMA fighter has gone 0-2-1 in the last couple of years and we're not really sure why. Beneil is talented everywhere but his chin has been failing him and we're not even counting when Edson Barboza tried to decapitate him with a knee from hell last year. That thing would've killed anyone. Still something is off but if anyone can fix things it's "Maestro" Rafael Cordeiro.

Moises is making his promotional debut and fights out of ATT. Thiago has that "prospect" label on him at only 23 years old, but he's rather unproven and passive at times.

Yeesh. If Ben can't win in this do-or-die bout he may be looking for another job. We can't bail on the talented fighter just yet and we look for him to get a hard fought win over the kid and begin the rebuilding process.

WINNER-Beneil Dariush by Decision

Devonte Smith (8-1) -230 vs. Julian Erosa (22-6) +190

Is this fight night a commercial for the Tuesday Night Contender Series or what? Christ there is a lot of people off of it fighting tonight including these two. Whatever. Prove yourselves and get back to us.

WINNER-Devonte Smith by Decision?

Prelims on UFC Fight Pass (5:30pm/CT):

Davi Ramos (8-2) -1000 vs. John Gunther (7-1) +650

"The Tasmanian Devil" is being gifted a win here because Gunther has no business being in the UFC. Nuff said.

WINNER-Davi Ramos by Rd.1 Submission

Joseph Morales (9-1) -105 vs. Eric Shelton (11-5) -115

I mean, MMAFO always liked the Flyweight division but if the UFC is abandoning it in 2019 it's hard to garner much interest here. What a shit show the UFC is becoming.

WINNER-Joseph Morales by Decision

Mark De La Rosa (10-1) -255 vs. Joby Sanchez (11-3) +215

And the Flyweights begin the ascent up to Bantamweight here. This is going to become a thing as the 125s are fazed out and they try their luck at 135 to remain employed. Fuck it's a mess.

"Bumblebee" tuna is a Skrap Pack member and for that, he gets our vote.

WINNER-Mark De La Rosa by Rd.2 Submission
