UFC 130 Results: Stann, Story, & Mir Win Big!

Renan do Nascimento Mota Pegado (whew) defeats Cole Escovedo by Unanimous Decision.

Michael McDonald earns a narrow Split Decision over Chris Cariaso.

Gleison Tibau submits Rafaello Oliveira with the RNC in the 2nd round. The "Tractor" came to fight hanging on the feet and on the ground until a left hand dropped him in the 2nd round. Tibau jumped all over him taking Oliveira's back sneaking in the choke for another impressive win for the ATT fighter. "Submission Of The Night"

Tim Boetsch defeats Kendall Grove by Unanimous Decision. Thank you Mr. Barbarian! Let's hope this is enough to get Kendall bounced from the UFC! Tim out muscled Grove, rinse, repeat.
* "Da Spyder" has lost 3 of his last 4. Time to send the kid to the exits please.

Demetrious Johnson upsets Miguel Torres by Unanimous Decision. The pesky Johnson got his takedown early but "Angel" reversed it and spent the majority of the round in top control. Demetrious reversed out but Torres threatened with a leg lock. "Mighty Mouse" ends up on top but Miguel pulls guard and confuses his opponent until the end of the round. Lil Johnson (heh) got another takedown though Miguel swept his way back to the feet only to be takedown down almost immediately. Both men earn impressive sweeps when Torres locks on a reverse triangle. Torres lets it go and stays very busy on his back while looking for submissions. The final round begins like the others with the "MM" takedown but Torres latches onto his arm. Johnson never threatens anything but stays on top and keeps active. "Angel" gets a beautiful sweep and both men scramble with Torres staying on top. Miguel snaps on a guillotine late but can't get it. MMAFO scores it 30-28 for Miguel Torres while the 3 blind judges score the bout 29-28 incorrectly for "MM" as the crowd rightly boos. "Fight Of The Night"
* Despite the judging error, this was a beautiful fight to watch.

Brian Stann KO's Jorge Santiago in the 2nd stanza. Why Santiago wanted to stand with Stann considering his notorious chin is beyond me. The "USA" chants were annoying me when Stann dropped Jorge with perfect left hook and the "All American" brought the brutal G&P. Brian couldn't finish him in the 1st though he came very close. Santiago tried for the takedown but can't finish it. Stann fired a 3 punch combo but Jorge answers with a spinning back fist. A biiig right hand drops Jorge and then 6 unanswered punches seal the deal. Very impressive win for Stann and that pesky chin problem rears its head again for Santiago.
* Brian Stann needs a big step up in competition and a big name opponent. In the coming months fight results we will find many suitable challengers.

Rick Story upsets Thiago Alves by Unanimous Decision. I am so stoked to be wrong about this fight! How cute is it that we have a woman referee huh? The "Horror" just punished the "Pitbull" against the cage early and often. In the closing moments the two men just stood and exchanged bombs to the delight of the crowd. Story was more aggressive but both men earned takedowns in the 2nd. Alves came on strong with the strikes in the final round but never did enough to end the fight which was his only possible way of victory. Rick was a step slow striking now but took all the shots and kept coming. The fighters went for broke in the final seconds but the winner was clear cut. 29-28 across the board.
* I was shocked to see the shocked look on the face of Thiago Alves who actually thought he won the contest as Rick Story was announced the winner. Hilarious.

Travis Browne KO's Stefan Struve in the initial round. The "Skyscraper" just cannot get around his tendency to always get hurt in fights. Tonight Browne almost took Stefan's head off with a superman punch that toppled the giant. Wow, was that emphatic! "KO Of The Night"
* Travis Browne continues to climb the ladder and should throw hands with Mike Russow. Stefan has now been KO'd 4 times in his career which makes his future a bit scary.

Frank Mir defeats Roy Nelson by Unanimous Decision. Roy looked fatter than ever and boy did it show. Frank landed a barrage of knees to Nelson's face but he kept pinning Mir against the cage. Frank also got a nice trip on Roy but didn't do much with it. Frank got a takedown in the 2nd and both men wheezed on. Mir did just whatever he wanted which included numerous takedowns that exhausted a poorly trained Nelson who had the sponsor “Training Mask” scrawled on the front of his shorts. “Big Country” even had the balls to wear a “Training Mask” knit cap as if devoid of the irony when the decision was read 30-27, 30-27, & 30-26 for Frank Mir.
* Roy Nelson has never looked worse. Everyone was talking about how good his cardio is but how much better he would be without the enormous gut that was larger than ever. "Big Country" is going to be forced to take a serious look at his diet and training methods if he wants to compete in the Heavyweight division. Frank Mir gets another notch on the belt but it's two lackluster back to back wins for the former champ.
** Frank Mir suffered a broken jaw in the fight.

Quinton Jackson defeats Matt Hamill by Unanimous Decision. When Hamill entered, they forgot to play his entrance music. He didn’t seem to notice. Just kidding, he came out to the Rolling Stones “Can You Hear Me Knockin.” Is Matt trying to be ironic? Of course he can’t hear them knocking! “Rampage” comes in chain swinging and howling like an ass. Mike Goldberg is more annoying than normal just spouting gibberish. He doesn’t even listen to what Joe Rogan is saying he just responds in various cliches.

As the fight begins, Randy Couture is throwing a lot of kicks early, oops, that bald head is Matt's. They work a bit until the end of the round when "Rampage" begins to land at will after stuffing every single weak foreshadowed takedown attempt. The 2nd is more of the same with horrible shot attempts and amateur striking from "What?" Jackson attacks at the end and punishes Hamill with knees and punches. In the final round both men look tired and the striking is sloppy with a lot of clinch work. This is slo-motion with Quinton winning but in ugly fashion. The crowd boos in appreciation. 30-27 all the way home in a bout the crowd hates. "Rampage" says he came in with a broken hand but the crowd boos anyway.
* "Rampage" obviously wasn't in great shape and easily won but does not deserve a title shot for this effort. The delusions of grandeur are over for Matt Hamill who has hit his MMA ceiling. Enjoy the movie!

7-3 on the picks. Michael Bisping and Jason Miller will coach the next season of TUF which sounds awful.
