UFC Fight Night 69 Jedrzejczyk vs. Penne: Picks & Odds

June 20, 2015

O2 World Berlin
Berlin, Germany

Main Card on UFC Fight Pass:

Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk (9-0) -800 vs. Jessica Penne (10-2) +500

MMAFO likes both of these women and they, and quite frankly the Strawweight division title, deserve better than this UFC Fight Night slot, but we digress.

Joanna "Champion" is a vicious striker who pulses back and forth between rhythms so opponents cannot guess when her attack is coming. The Polish fighter has great takedown defense but her boxing brings power to a division devoid of strength. Training for years under legendary kickboxer Ernesto Hoost, Joanna has mastered her masters left hook to the body and can counter, or come forward with relative ease. Jedrzejczyk uses angles and distance deftly and is basically lightyears ahead of her peers standing. The ground game, is a bit of a mystery at this point.

The former Invicta FC Atomweight Champion is a very game fighter who specializes in submissions, but shows no fear exchanging punches on the feet. That could be a real issue in this bout as she is out gunned in the boxing department and allows herself to be hit just to try and get things to the ground. Should Jessica get things to the canvas she is lightning fast and able to chain submissions together.

This isn't a great matchup for the defensively challenged Penne. She's going to take the hit but won't be prepared for the power. Jessica needs to clinch to use her throws to initiate the grappling in in close Joanna is going to eat her alive. These are two great female fighters though and MMAFO expects an exciting title defense.
