2014 MMAFO World MMA Awards

Male Fighter of the Year:
ROBBIE LAWLER
The “Ruthless” one had the “Fight of the Year” against Johny Hendricks at UFC 171 which he lost, but he rebounded defeating Jake Ellenberger, Matt Brown, and then avenged said loss to Hendricks at UFC 181 to become the UFC Welterweight Champion and complete an amazing career resurgence.

Female Fighter of the Year:
CARLA ESPARZA
The “Cookie Monster” dropped the Invicta FC Strawweight title to journey to the UFC and The Ultimate Fighter 20. She came in with the pressure of being the #1 seed and walked through the competition to become the UFC’s 1st Women’s Strawweight Champion.

Breakthrough Fighter of the Year:
WILL BROOKS
Nobody gave any respect (save for MMAFO: see last year’s awards) to ATT’s “Ill” Will coming into Bellator 120 against former champ Michael Chandler. Brooks won a close Split Decision to become the Interim Lightweight Champion and was still given no love. Mike went back to work at Bellator 131 and this time stopped Chandler via TKO in the 4th round to become Bellator’s undisputed Lightweight Champion and put his name in the Top 10 at 155.

International Fighter of the Year:
CONOR MCGREGOR
Conor defeated Diego Brandao and Dustin Porier, both by 1st round TKO, but it was his aura that set the MMA world on fire. Fans and pundits cannot get enough of this cat as he rose to superstardom faster than any fighter before him. And McGregor is only getting started.

Fight of the Year:
JOHNY HENDRICKS vs. ROBBIE LAWLER 1 (UFC 171)
If you saw it, ‘nuff said.

KO of the Year:
DAMACIO PAGE vs. Brian Hall (LFC 36)
Jesus christ I think the “Angel of Death” is a proper nickname. I thought he killed that guy.

Submission of the Year (tie):
SHINYA AOKI's Twister on Yuki Yamamoto (IGF 2014)
A late, last second entry squeaks in as everyone's favorite Judokan got the ultra-rare Twister on New Year's Eve. Amazing stuff from the "Mat Magician."
BEN SAUNDERS’ Omoplata on Chris Heatherly (UFC Fight Night 49)
The 1st Omoplata submission victory in UFC history marked the return of “Killa-B.”

Beatdown of the Year/Upset of the Year:
TJ DILLASHAW vs. RENAN PEGADO (UFC 173)
TJ was a +765 underdog in some places and yet, the Team Alpha Male Bantamweight dropped “Barao” in the 1st round, and from there, the throttling was on! Renan had no answer for the “Viper” and Dillashaw went on to dispose of the former champ who was on a 33 fight winning streak, with extreme prejudice in the 5th and final round. A judges decision wasn’t good enough for TJ who took home gold in the biggest upset, and most brutal ass kicking of the year. Damn!

Comeback Fighter:
CAT ZINGANO
The “Alpha Cat” returned after having Platelet-rich plasma and stem cell treatment on both her knees which cost her a coaching spot against Ronda Rousey on The Ultimate Fighter, and her earned title shot. If that wasn’t enough, Cat’s husband, Mauricio Zingano, was found dead of an apparent suicide. After all of this, Cat returned at UFC 178 to fight Amanda Nunes. Zingano struggled early in the bout but rebounded and TKO’d her opponent in the 3rd round to complete a harrowing and inspirational comeback.

Most Improved Fighter:
TJ DILLASHAW
Crazy gas tank. Stellar amateur wrestling. Vastly improved footwork and striking under the tutelage of Coach Duane Ludwig showed up in spades as the barely ranked TJ came in and shocked the MMA world.

Prospect of the Year:
MICHAEL PAGE
The English kickboxer improved his record to 7-0, but it was also the way he did it. “Venom” brings an exciting unorthodox fighting style that he calls “freestyle kickboxing.” Head to YouTube and give him a view.

Coach of the Year:
RAFAEL CORDEIRO
The leader of the King’s MMA gym Fabricio Werdum (UFC Interim Champ), Lyoto Machida, Rafael Dos Anjos (#1 contender), Beneil Dariush, Wanderlei Silva, and many, many more. The “Mestre” is one of the most highly sought after and respected coaches of all time.

Gym of the Year:
SBG Ireland (Straight Blast Gym)
Head Coach John Kavanagh runs SBG which invaded the UFC with Conor McGregor, Gunner Nelson, Aisling Daly, Paddy Holohan, Cathal Pendred, and there are more to come! No other gym made such an impact in the calendar year.

Ringcard Girl of the Year:
BRITTNEY PALMER

Entrance of the Year:
CONOR MCGREGOR (UFC Fight Night 46)
The “Notorious” one entered the O2 arena in Ireland to a mashup of Sinead O’Connor’s “The Foggy Dew” and The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” and the crowed exploded! An amazing moment at one of the best cards of the year!

STORY OF THE YEAR:
The banning of TRT and the subsequent fall of Chael Sonnen.
The NSAC finally banned TRT in MMA competition and wouldn’t you know it, Chael Sonnen called it a career. Seems the “American Gangster” just can’t compete without cheating so he retired, and we will always be thankful to the NSAC for that!

MOMENT OF THE YEAR:
“You still there pussy?”
The behind the scenes eavesdropping on Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier gave us the greatest moment of the year. We got to see “Bones” showing his true colors, as a fraud who laughs about manipulating the public, and the true hatred between these men. Ooh, this fight is gonna be good!
CHEATING LIKE A BOSS

Cheater of the Year:
YOEL ROMERO
“Stoolgate.” Yup, it even spawned its own derivative of “watergate” so you know its serious. At UFC 178, an exhausted Romero sat on his stool as the 3rd round was ready to begin. Yoel’s corner men spilled water on the mat which had to be cleaned up, too much vasoline was applied and had to be wiped away, and even after all of this, Romero remained on the stool refusing to stand to get those precious seconds of rest while Tim Kennedy, ready to fight, was losing his mind across the cage. The cheating strategy worked and the “Cheating Soldier of God” TKO’d Kennedy for an egregious win. WWJD?

WORST JUDGES DECISION:
Ross Pearson vs. Diego Sanchez
Ross “The Real Deal” put an absolute ass whoopin’ on past his prime and shell of his former self, Diego Sanchez. It was not only the worst robbery of 2014, but a case can be made that is was the worst robbery of all time! Commentator Kenny Florian rightly stated moments after the bout, “with all due respect to Diego Sanchez, he did not win that fight.” The world agreed.

Hello..If you have been weight training and building muscle for very long, you have probably figured out that the most important movements to do in the gym are the heavy, compound exercises such as squats, bench presses, and deadlifts. You probably also know that working the big muscle groups such as legs, back, and chest is of primary importance. See more at-sbg
