UFC Fight Night 127 Werdum vs. Volkov: Fight Card, Half-Assed Musings + Odds

March 17, 2018
The O2 Arena
London, England

MMAFO has dogged the UFC events this year, but this is completely free on UFC Fight Pass, and has some interesting match ups with possible prospects. There could be more interest in the undercard than the main and these under the radar events generally deliver well.

Main Card on UFC Fight Pass (4pm/CT):

#4 Fabricio Werdum (23-7-1) -200 vs. #7 Alexander Volkov (29-6) +170

"Vai Cavalo," one of the biggest cunts in all of MMA, returns on a 2-fight bounce and looking to build toward a rematch with Stipe Miocic who lamped him into a coma now two years ago. "Flabby Fabby" is now 40 years old, but age isn't as important a factor in the big boy division. "Boomerang" likes to think he's a kickboxer throwing wild shit at opponents, but really he's a jitz expert at heart.

For his part, "Drago" has suddenly found success after a failed run in Bellator and has rattled off 5 victories since leaving said promotion. Volkov is a lofty 6'7" with 19 (T)KO finishes!

Eh, "Voltron" isn't out of his depth per say, but his come forward style and long frame provides amble space for Werdum to get him to the mat where he'll run game. If Fabricio decides he wants to stand and trade just to make things interesting, it could be closer, but when "Flabby Fabby" wants to submit the Russian, he will.

WINNER-Fabricio Werdum by Rd.3 Submission

#6 Jimi Manuwa (17-3) -200 vs. Jan Blachowicz (21-7) +170 [Rematch]

The unwanted rematch between two cats who aren't even "gatekeeper" level in the UFC, is not drumming up much interest. The combatants last fought in April of '15 which Jimi won via decision. Now we run it back because there is very little depth at light heavy.

Manuwa was demanding a title shot a year ago which MMAFO just found adorable. The "Poster Boy" has 3 jaw crushing losses to Alexander Gustafsson, Anthony Johnson, and Volkan Oezdemir, but the 38 year old is a very strong striker who pressures well.

Blachowicz has improved slightly but he's nothing special. Jan is very slow and tends to gas out by the 3rd round.

This rematch goes the same as the 1st with Jimi keeping Jan on the back foot and nobody giving a shit.

WINNER-Jimi Manuwa by Decision

Tom Duquesnoy (15-2) -300 vs. Terrion Ware (17-7) +250

"Doo can waah" for the uninitiated, had a lot of momentum coming into the UFC but at 24, the Jackson-Wink fighter but he's got defensive liabilities and has been pushed around a bit like the youngster he is.

Terrion is very durable and brings the fight to you but in all honesty, he's no contender.

Both men share recently losses to Cody Stamann but Tom is far more skilled and has a much stronger camp behind him. Duquesnoy's loss may have been a slight humbling that he needed and the "Fire Kid" is only going to improve while we've seen the best of Ware and he's about to see his career go the other way.

WINNER-Tom Duquesnoy by Decision

Leon Edwards (14-3) -210 vs. Peter Sobotta (17-5-1) +175

The Brit is looking for some recognition having won his last 4 (6-2 in the UFC) though a striker without much power, he is effective with his boxing and has underrated wrestling skills.

Ze German defeated our boy Ben Saunders last May and for that we hate him. Nah, the submission fighter is alright and Peter has really improved his striking game  in Thailand.

Ooh, this is gonna be a close back and forth battle. Sobotta has made the more obvious improvements but Edwards is staunch in the skills he has. Leon will keep that jab going and he is accurate when he does decide to put some nasty on his punches. Edwards can hang on the ground and though we expect a competitive fight, the percentages lean toward Leon who is much faster and more athletic.

WINNER-Leon Edwards by Decision

Prelims on UFC Fight Pass (12:45pm/CT):

John Phillips (21-6) -105 vs. Charles Byrd (9-4) -115

"Man Dynamite" Byrd is 34 and getting his shot at the big time.

JP fights out of SBG Ireland (Conor McGregor, etc.) and is coming in on a 4-fight streak all of which came by knockout. Eighteen career (T)KO's for "White Tyson" and Byrd will be viewing the lights sooner rather than later.

WINNER-John Phillips by Rd.1 TKO

Danny Roberts (14-3) -185 vs. Oliver Enkamp (7-1) +160

The Swede is going to turn some heads here! Enkamp looks like a child but he's got game standing or on the ground. Roberts chin is suspect and he allows opponents to exploit his lack of defense. Oliver is going to put Danny on his butt before tapping him out.

Upset Pick WINNER-Oliver Enkamp by Rd.2 Submission

Jack Marshman versus Bradley Scott has been CANCELLED.

Marshman had trouble with his weight cut and has been pulled from the card. This was his 1st attempt to move down to Welterweight.

Again, before everyone starts screaming about how the UFC needs more weight classes, take fucking personal responsibility for your actions! More weight classes will change nothing as fighters will continue to try and play the system whether you have 100 weight classes or 1.

Much respect to Bradley Scott who was a professional and made weight.

Danny Henry (11-2) +300 vs. Hakeem Dawodu (7-0-1) -360

"Mean" Hakeem is a fun Muay Thai kickboxer with explosive speed while Henry is a high volume striker who takes far too many punches in return.

Danny's style isn't great for the judges and he's not going to be able to get hands on Hakeem to grapple.

WINNER-Hakeem Dawodu by Rd.2 TKO

Paul Craig (9-2) +460 vs. Magomed Ankalaev (9-0) -620

The "Bearjew" talks loud, but has little to back it up. He's going to be returning to BAMMA soon.

Ankalaev is going to straight maul Craig and violently shoo him out of the big leagues.

WINNER-Magomed Ankalaev by Rd.1 TKO

Stevie Ray (21-7) -170 vs. Kajan Johnson (22-12-1) +150

"Braveheart" is a decent boxer without much power but a bevy of technical skills. Steve fought out his contract but he ended on a loss to Paul Felder which likely lowered his value, but he obviously got resigned.

Johnson is a veteran who has found his groove in the UFC winning 3 straight. Kajan is fighting out of Tristar and he'll be looking for takedowns and ground work.

This should be close. Ray has a tendency to be lulled into opponents games when he should rely on his boxing skills, distance, and avoid brawling. Counter versus a counter here so it may get slow, but if,IF, Stevie can stay off his back, he'll have the advantage. However, Kajan is going to come early and look pop before hitting that low takedown. Then it gets interesting as Ray hasn't show anything special on the ground. This goes the distance in a coin flip special.

WINNER-Stevie Ray by Decision?

Mark Godbeer (13-3) +235 vs. Dmitry Sosnovskiy -275

Godbeer is not good. Let's move on.

The undefeated "Wicked Machine" is going to G&P Mark into a living death.

WINNER-Dmitry Sosnovskiy by Rd.1 TKO

Nasrat Haqparast (8-2) -145 vs. Nad Narimani (10-2) +125

The King's MMA fighter took a flier to get into the UFC last October but lost a competitive decision to Marcin Held. This was the 1st time Nasrat met the judges as he is a southpaw (T)KO specialist.

Now its Nad's turn to enter the game on short notice after defeating notorious Paddy Pimblett last April to capture the Cage Warriors Featherweight Championship. Narimani is a scrapper but he's moving up a weight class for the opportunity.

We're excited to see a couple of unproven prospects get in there and suss things out. You gotta side with the power of Haqparast early and if he doesn't get a quick finish, he'll garner enough points to get his 1st promotional win.

WINNER-Nasrat Haqparast by Decision
